Work; just hearing the word, some begin to perspire. Thevery simple truth is that since the time of Adam, work has been
a part of the human experience (Gen. 2.15). It is also a simple,
but unfortunate truth to observe in our contemporary scene an
entitlement mentality. This is a mentality that believes I
deserve opportunities and commodities at anothers expense.
What is work? Work is the exhaustion of energy to producea thing or accomplish a task. Work may be mental or physical,
and is both in most instances. Planning and carrying out a plan
are two aspects of work. The creation of a product is just as
much as part of its construction. Work is a dynamic thing. In the narrative of Nehemiah, one of the many benchmarks
in Israelite history is chronicledthe rebuilding of the
Jerusalem walls. In retrospect, their productivity is evaluated:
So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together tohalf its height, for the people had a mind to work. (Neh. 4.6)
The families of Israel all came to pitch in where they could;
some were even armed to protect their family against theirenemies. Nothing was going to hinder their work (Neh. 4.10ff).
This month we are examining our work as a congregation.
We have listed several aspects of our work that we need to do
(teach, seek the lost, encouragement, benevolence, etc.). We aretalking through various ways we can meet our work as a
congregation and how we individually fit into these works
(Rom. 12.3-8; 1 Cor. 12.12-27).We are proceeding this way because we know that a church
which plans together will work together. There is much truth in
the following words regarding church member involvement:Strive to develop a program that is so broad, so deep and so
wonderful that every member in the church can find a place
to serve in areas that they are especially talented and trained
in and where they feel comfortable. (Ira North,Balance[Nashville: Gospel Advocate. 1983] 31)
Pray with us that we may walk in worthy manner as His church.

THOUGHT OF THE MONTH
We are in vital union with JesusChrist! His life flows into us, and thebody is the very expression of theHead. Obviously, then, the church isnot basically an organization; its anamazing organism the completer ofthe cosmic Christ, and the means tothe fullness of his own glory. This isnot said of any other institution ofGod."
Raymond C. Ortlund, Let the
Church Be the Church (Waco,Tex.: Word Books, 1983), 57.
The
We are in the process of collecting and collating the results
of an involvement questionnaire recently distributed within thecongregation. The questionnaire originates from two ministry
discussion forums we held on the second and third Sundayevening services of January.
There was much talk about placing new works on the
congregations ministry table, but there was a need to create anopportunity to encouragement and involvement. We began to
talk about the various things we, as a congregation, are
responsible for; and then, we began to provide ways on how to
accomplish these ministries.
These discussions were highly exciting and encouraging. Itwas suggested that each of us had a niche to fit as we
evangelize, do benevolence, encourage brethren, and participate
in worship. Consequently, we wanted to provide an opportunity
for the brethren to sign up for ministry assignments.
There truly is much to do, and like any harvest project we
are organizing ourselves for the Lords cause. As the Lord once
spoke:
My food is to do the will of him who sent me and toaccomplish his work. Do you not say, There are yet
four months, then comes the harvest? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white forharvest. (John 3.34-35)
Finding a place where we work effectively in the harvest is our
first step, and then to organize ourselves accordingly.
We are working on regrouping ourselves this year and
focusing on the work of the kingdom. This is a tremendousopportunity for us as we consider VBS programs, gospel
meetings, benevolence and encouragement programs, and many
other options at our disposal. Please keep this process in your
prayers.
