Mobile mapping oers several signicant advantages over traditionalacquisition methods; Mitigates the need for trac management with rapid data collection at highway speed Removes survey personnel from the live-carriageway Combination of photography and point cloud provides an exceptional data extraction source Provides a permanent visual record of the environment Intuitive data extraction tools with online viewing capability

Mobile MappingLandScope Engineering oer a comprehensive mobile mappingservice using bespoke vehicles equipped with the compact andpowerful Topcon IP-S3 Mobile Mapping system. Capturing high accuracy point cloud and 360° panoramic imagery whilst travelling atnormal highway speed ensures a fast and cost-eective solution. Theresultant data set has wide ranging applications including topographical survey, asset inventory, visualisation and modelling.

The System

The Topcon IP-S3 Mobile Mapping system overcomes the challenges of mapping from a mobile platform through the combination of threeindependent technologies; a dual frequency GNSS receiver to providegeospatial position, an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to providevehicle attitude and wheel encoders to obtain odometry information. These technologies combine to sustain a highly accurate vehicletrajectory even in locations where satellite signals may be blocked byobstructions such as buildings, bridges or trees.

The system is lightweight and boasts a exible mounting system whichallows for deployment on road, eld, rail and water - ensuring allenvironments can be surveyed.

As well as standard deployment to a survey vehicle, LandScope are able to mount the system on an all terrain vehicle (ATV) for data acquisition o-road such as rugged terrain or pedestrianised areas. LandScope has also established the capability to vessel mount the mobile mapping system for marine and river based applications including structural asset inspection of dock walls, harbours and jetties.

Measure, Model and Map

The point cloud data may be viewed in a variety of standard softwarepackages including Esri, AutoDesk, Bentley and Map Info, and when combined with the photography, using an asset extraction tool such as Orbit GIS, real value can be realised and asset information may be extracted quickly and accurately.

Orbit software optimises the use of mobile mapping data to enhancethe user experience from a basic viewing, content overlay andmeasurement environment through to a complete end to end 3Dsolution. The user has access to feature and extraction capabilities, point cloud visualisation tools and data sharing potential to obtainmaximum value from the mobile mapping data.
