We keep money moving worldwide,
serving one customer per second, 24/7.
02
Our story starts in 1976, when Lloyd Dorfman opened our first bureau de change on Southampton Row, London.
Before long, Travelex was at seaports and airports as well as in towns and cities. We’ve grown organically, entering the USA in 1989, Australia in 1990, India and Oman in 2003 and China a year later.
We’ve also grown by acquisition. Back in 2001, we bought Thomas Cook Global and Financial Services, making us the world’s largest provider of airport and passenger terminal bureaux de change services.
In 2011, we sold our card programme management business to MasterCard and Travelex Global Business Payments to Western Union. We also announced our intention to purchase the largest foreign exchange business in Brazil, Grupo Confidence, and FX Africa in South Africa.
We are committed to serving our retail, wholesale and outsourcing customers.

Genuine expertise.
We have what it takes to be a specialist business.
What does it mean to be a Travelex customer?
It means having access to more than 80 currencies in over 24 countries. It means being able to solve travel money needs before a trip or pick it up on the road. It also means stores at the airport – where the opening hours rival those of our websites – as well as on the high street and in shopping centres.
It won’t be a surprise that running a business of this scale takes genuine expertise. We take care to serve people in the way that’s right for them, and have become known for giving great advice as well as supplying foreign exchange.
Our Prepaid currency card, complete with Chip and PIN, is a secure and convenient way to make purchases or withdraw cash overseas at over 29 million locations worldwide. Our offer also includes frequent flyer points on foreign exchange plus Travellers Cheques and international phone cards.
Our Buy Back Guarantee is an industry-leading service in many markets, in which customers can return unspent currency to us at the rate they bought it, commission free. We also support them with tax reclaim and refund, cash advances and overseas payments.

Customers can visit our stores and, in an increasing number of countries, choose to order or purchase currency online or on their mobile for convenience and value. In many markets, we can deliver it to them at home or have them collect it in store.

ATMsWe have over 900 ATMs around the world, and many more on a white label basis for our partners. These offer the currency of the country they’re based in, plus choices of foreign exchange. Some of our ATMs are Cash to Cash, which means customers can insert cash in one currency and withdraw in another.
Travelex offers the latest in dynamic currency conversion technology, Currency Select. This gives cardholders visiting from overseas the chance to have the payments or ATM withdrawals they make converted into their domestic currency. This happens instantly and in real time at the point of transaction to provide home currency value.
Another area of expertise is the supply of travel money services to hundreds of companies for their travelling employees or customers. We have a user-friendly online service, with management control to streamline the administration of employees’ travel expenses or fulfilment of customers’ needs.

We are not only the world’s leading foreign exchange specialist. We are also the world’s leading supplier of outsourced foreign currency services, working with supermarkets, airport operators, large companies, banks and building societies, travel agents, casinos and hotels. We’re able to operate under our partners’ brands, the Travelex brand or as a sub- or co-brand.
We are in over 100 international airports. We help these airports to give travellers world-class foreign exchange services and improve overall revenues from foreign exchange. Our role also goes beyond foreign exchange. We work with airport operators and the airlines themselves to offer everything from VAT refunds – now one of our most requested services – through to cash management for payments from on-board sales and per diem expenses. We’re the link between airlines and charities, turning travellers’ coins into cash for good causes.
Around the world, Travelex is very often behind a bank’s foreign currency service. We provide white labelled foreign currency solutions including pre-determined packs of currency, stock holding locations as well as online and phone order services. Partners can outsource everything to us or pick the products that best complement their offering. We’re able to supply everything up to and including turnkey solutions.
We help our travel agent partners to offer a more complete service that deepens their relationship with their customers. Solutions range from implants in the agent’s store to co-branded and white label online ordering sites enabling their customers to pre-order and collect their travel money as and when they choose.
The majority of our customers say convenience is the most important factor in deciding where to buy their foreign exchange with 76% of customers choosing to pick up their travel money on the spot. Many like to do so while picking up their groceries and suntan lotion. Our bureau implant is a convenient offering, as we can share our resource and expertise with our partners.
We operate full service in-store bureaux in Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s in the UK, HyperCity in India and U.S. Bank in the US.

Broadly speaking, there are three main business-partner models that we turn to. We’re always happy to discuss and consider which will be the most appropriate for any new working relationship.
We do business with our partners in the ways that suit them.
Often our partners need to provide their customers with foreign currency but lack the systems and capabilities. We’re able to provide the foreign currency and IT systems as well as training partners’ employees to conduct transactions that comply with local requirements.
Order solutionsWe can offer three ways to help you serve your customers: in store, by phone or online.
Call CentreOur award-winning global service call centre is open 362 days a year, and is able to offer bespoke customer and employee travel money ordering with call scripts for partners. Our Call Centre employees are highly trained and we also offer the reassurance of an advanced fraud detection tools.
OnlineWe provide more white labelled travel money websites for our partners than any other company. Our global sites have robust fraud prevention software and allow travel money to be delivered to customers at home or collected by them in partner branches or retail locations.
We establish a partner-branded bureau de change within our partner’s premises and are responsible for all foreign exchange-related products and services for that partner, as well as its customers. This includes providing the currency itself, as well as employees, IT, training, operations and more.
This model is most often used by other retailers at airports so they can accept foreign currency from customers paying for goods and services. This model can include tax reclaim and refund and even banking and cash management solutions.

Travelex Europe
This is, of course, the region where our story began. We’ve been in the UK since 1976 and progressed towards Continental Europe by opening on a P&O ferry serving Rotterdam in 1982. We made it to dry land in 1984 when we opened in that city itself, soon followed by an opening at Zeebrugge passenger terminal in Belgium.
Over the years, we’ve built a strong understanding of what inbound and local outbound travellers need from us and have developed our offer accordingly.

We opened our first store in this part of the world at Muscat International Airport in Oman in 2003. The same year, we entered India and since then, we’ve enjoyed a period of sustained growth across the region, opening stores in airports and beyond.
We continue to focus on growing our network, not only by extending our activities in the countries in which we already have a presence, but also by entering new countries.

Travelex Americas
Travelex has been operating in the US since 1989, when we opened in New York’s JFK airport. We extended our presence considerably in the 1990s when we took over Mutual of Omaha’s network of airport stores and established Travelex Insurance Services. We now have over 200 stores and a rapidly growing network of ATMs in North America. We’re also expanding foreign exchange services here by working with over 17,000 partner locations.
In 2011, we announced our intention to acquire Grupo Confidence, Brazil’s largest independent foreign exchange business and we’re expanding our footprint into South America.

APAC is a region that is changing fast. We have had a presence in APAC since 1990, when we opened stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra. Our APAC region is now headquartered in Sydney, Australia, and we have expanded significantly since those early days.
We’re determined to serve our retail customers and partners as they seize the opportunities that this region of the world brings.
Just one example of our ground-breaking work includes the launch of the first foreign exchange ATM in the APAC region, which we launched back in 2009.

Our reputation is built on trust. It’s the kind of trust that grows from a track record of reliability, security and a commitment to setting the gold standard in compliance and regulation.
Trust Travelex. You’ll be in good company.
First to be trusted in BeijingIn 2008, Travelex was the first non-Chinese company in Beijing to receive a special trial foreign exchange licence from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange and has gone on to secure licences in a number of other locations in China.
First to be trusted in JapanIn Japan, we were the first non-bank to be registered with a Funds Transfer Business Operator licence under the Fund Settlement Act, allowing us to issue Prepaid cards and offer money transfer services. Today, Travelex has more stores in Japan than any other overseas retailer.
First to be trusted in MalaysiaIn 2012, we were awarded a licence by Bank Negara Malaysia, the Central Bank, to conduct money services business there. We’re one of a few very privileged companies to hold such a licence and the only one that’s not from Malaysia. We were also invited by the Bank to share our knowledge and expertise on regulation around the world, meeting with its representatives, the Prime Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank as they worked towards drafting their own regulation.
First to be trusted in BrazilWorking with BACEN, the Brazilian Central Bank, Travelex was instrumental in creating a new form of ‘Banco’ licence, called a Foreign Exchange Bank Licence. This licence allows the carrying out of corporate payments and the purchase and sale of wholesale banknotes and foreign currency, amongst other things.
