Experiences. When we look back on a life well lived, what do we really remember? It is those special times that we have shared along the way that help develop our character.

It may seem bold to say that our purpose is to create a trip of a lifetime, but that is exactly what we strive to do on each and every trip. We encourage young people to believe that they have unlimited potential and that anything is possible. Time and time again we hear our adventures are “life changing,” “the best trip ever,” and “the best three weeks of my life.” These endorsements reinforce our vision that we have created something truly special.

BACKGROUND and PHILOSOPHY

Every Moondance trip offers its students unparalleled opportunities for personal growth. They find their curiosity and sense of connection to the larger world, stimulated by a rich set of experiences and encounters. Moondance students discover remarkable reserves of adaptability, resourcefulness, and spirit while undertaking adventurous and often challenging outdoor activities. Moondance leaders work diligently to establish a nurturing, non-competitive environment in which every young person is pushed beyond his or her “comfort zone” to a place where preconceived limits are challenged and significant personal growth can occur.

Most importantly, Moondance cultivates individual achievement within a strong context of teamwork and community. On every Moondance trip, students assume responsibility for the other members of their group as well as for themselves, learning the importance of positive “expedition behavior” as the foundation for success in challenging circumstances. With this experience, students learn the value of both giving to and relying on one another to create a vibrant, healthy group dynamic.

WHAT YOU DOOn the first day of your trip, your leaders meet you at the airport or designated rendezvous site. You meet all the new faces, knowing that you will soon become fast friends. It is very normal to be a bit nervous as you get ready to venture out into new experiences, but you learn quickly that the more you are engaged in all aspects of your trip, the greater the rewards.

From the first moment of your trip, you learn by doing. Most importantly, you learn to share in others’ challenges, fears, temporary setbacks and ultimately their triumphs. Bring only motivation, a burning desire to learn and a willingness to share, and you will take home a sense of accomplishment that will sustain you for years to come.

A DAY IN THE LIFEEach day involves one or more activities such as backpacking, sea kayaking, teaching English to a group of young children or contributing to a local community. You learn new backcountry and travel skills daily or sharpen those you already possess. Though our programs can be both physically and mentally challenging, you will find time to relax – soaking up a little sunshine, photographing the abundant wildlife, or swapping stories with new friends.

STUDENT LEADERSHIPThough leaders serve as mentors and teachers, you are required to openly and honestly solve problems and deal with challenging issues that arise. In these situations, our leaders offer encouragement and feedback while empowering you to make choices and to be held accountable for them. There are inherent risks in backcountry and adventure travel, and leaders monitor groups very closely and turn over leadership opportunities as your judgment and skills sharpen.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARYMany people will join a Moondance trip without prior experience. You don’t have to be a great athlete to fully enjoy a Moondance adventure. Anyone in good physical condition with a positive attitude, an adventurous spirit, and willingness to be part of a small group will find great success on Moondance. In return, be prepared to learn a ton about the outdoors and how to travel comfortably and safely all over the world. In doing so, you will be rewarded with the experience of a lifetime.

FAMILY ATMOSHPHERE AND FRIENDSHIPMaking new friends and having fun are just two of the unique bonuses of any Moondance trip. With a small group of positive, wholesome and motivated teens living in a close environment, these bonds form quickly and keep friendships lasting a lifetime. Students tell us every year that having this sense of family is one of the best parts of their Moondance trip.

what TO EXPECT For some students, their trip will be the first time they have spent an extended period of time away from the comforts of home. For many, it will be the first time they have worked together in a group, with people from all over the country, 24 hours a day for weeks at a time. Therefore, teamwork, good communication and a positive attitude become very important. Good “Expedition Behavior” is acting with the best interest of the group in mind, looking out for other group members and being a good team member yourself. It may mean helping someone set up their tent, filling their water bottle, or simply encouraging them on a tough climb. It doesn’t take much to have good EB, but it certainly makes a difference to everyone on the trip.

WHAT MAKES MOONDANCE UNIQUE?

Much more than teaching young people how to climb, paddle or travel comfortably in the outdoors or a foreign country, Moondance wants to instill greater values

in our students. Trust, communication, responsibility, perseverance, respect – these are just some of the values we want everyone to gain.

LEADERS More than teachers or counselors, our leaders are role models and friends to our students. Great care is taken in the selection and training of our staff. Our leaders are able to make the adventure experience relevant to everyday life by providing opportunities for our students to take a leadership role in team building, group decision-making and commitment to the group effort.

ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES Whether it is backpacking, rock climbing or whitewater rafting, we design a safe, learn-by-doing approach to all of our activities. We maintain the highest safety standards throughout every activity. With technical activities such as climbing or mountaineering, we use subcontracted outfitters with professional guides to give us the best possible instruction and safety.

DIVERSE PROGRAMS Over the 18 years that Moondance has been around we’ve traversed some pretty amazing terrain. We offer domestic and international trips in the world’s most desirable locales. We provide a chance to learn technical and wilderness skills, to perform community service, and to immerse oneself in the culture of some of the most incredible places on the globe.

WHO ARE MOONDANCERS? Our students are motivated, intelligent, and share a common thirst for adventure. They are energetic, open-minded and positive. In 2013, Moondancers came from 32 different states and 5 foreign countries. Each new applicant must come recommended by way of two teachers who can speak in favor of the student as to ensure positive, encouraging group dynamics.

SMALL GROUPS Our groups are designed to be no larger than 13 students with at least 2 adult leaders. This small group dynamic allows for the best opportunity to get the most out of your experience.

I can honestly say that Moondance has played a valuable and important role in shaping the grown man that my son is becoming. It is wonderful

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Hayes founded Moondance in 1995 as a way to share outdoor adventures with young people. He has been working and designing programs for teenagers since 1975. The beginning of his nearly 40 years in organized camping were spent at Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, a camp founded by his grandfather in 1930. A graduate of Charlotte Country Day School and the University of Alabama, Hayes served The Lovett School in Atlanta for twelve years as the Dean of Students and the Director of Summer Programs. He has participated in outdoor education programs with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), the North Carolina Outward Bound School and the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). Hayes spends each summer visiting many students on their trips.

Hayes’ wife, Michael, is a native of Nashville, TN and graduate of Harpeth Hall and The University of the South – Sewanee. Michael spends her quality time raising their daughter, Hunter. Hunter is eagerly awaiting her first Moondance trip in 2018. They live in Asheville, NC where they coordinate all Moondance adventures.

MOONDANCE LEADERSOur skilled, dedicated and caring staff is the most important element for the success of Moondance Adventures. Our leaders are vital to the integrity and safety of our programs. Their responsibilities are quite diverse; they are instructors, leaders, facilitators, friends, fellow participants and role models.

Moondance leaders form the nucleus of what makes this experience such a positive part of the program. Great care is taken when selecting our staff. At the heart of every Moondance expedition is a group of highly qualified, dedicated, enthusiastic adult instructors who have been carefully selected from a large group of applicants. Many of our leaders return year after year with many being past participants. They are well-traveled, bright, energetic, conscientious adults with a healthy sense of humor, who love sharing their enthusiasm for the outdoors. Moondance leaders are united in their passion to create the best experience possible and are most certainly the key to our success. All leaders are a minimum of 21 years old, with the average age being 25. They are well educated and have completed, or are on their way to completing, their undergraduate degree with many pursuing advanced degrees. They enjoy working with teenagers and have extensive training in wilderness programs and experiential education. Many are graduates of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) or Outward Bound. Many have full-time careers in secondary education or as full time outdoor educators. Each leader has a minimum of 80 hours of medical training as a Wilderness First Responder. Their primary job is to keep students safe and comfortable. To ensure that Moondance maintains its “safety first” philosophy, the student-to-staff ratio never exceeds 6:1. During our comprehensive 11-day staff training, each leader renews his/her commitment to Moondance’s philosophy and rededicates themself to serving Moondance students. Every Moondance leader is committed to the idea that to lead, we must serve.

overnight.

A highlight for many occurs during our evening debriefs which we call “Moonup”. Sharing challenges and triumphs with new friends creates

a special bond. Conducted by peer-appointed Leaders of the Day, Moonup allows the group to participate in discussions about anything

and everything. From thought-provoking topics, to belly-aching laughter, you know you are part of a special group during Moonup.

SAFETYSAFETY IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FOREMOST CONCERN FOR ANY FAMILY

LOOKING INTO AN ADVENTURE PROGRAM AND IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE

ON ANY MOONDANCE TRIP.

We create an atmosphere where we allow our students to stretch their limits while ensuring their well being. Safety is continually taught and practiced throughout every course, and students play integral roles in our commitment to the safety of the entire group.

We take enormous pride in our excellent safety record and work hard to provide a quality experience for our students. Our reputation is a direct reflection of our well-designed courses, detailed protocol for conducting safe activities and our low student-to-staff ratio. We constantly monitor and evaluate risks for each trip and make managing these risks a year round responsibility. We use only the finest outfitters and guide services for technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and whitewater rafting.

Our leaders are integral to the safety of each trip. Prior to the start of our programs, our trip leaders participate in an intensive 11-day training where safety policies and procedures are discussed. All our leaders are certified as Wilderness First Responders, an 80-hour course in wilderness medical training. Every leader-team carries an extensive first aid kit at all times and are familiar with the emergency support systems in the areas we travel.

We must learn to manage risks daily while living in the wilderness. Safety is not something that Moondance, or any program, can guarantee. Participating in outdoor adventure activities involves inherent risks and dangers that can lead to injury, property damage or even loss of life. Almost any activity can be potentially dangerous. These risks cannot be predicted and can include forces of nature and the possibility of accidents. We discuss how to respect and evaluate risks throughout each trip. We want to teach each participant that responsible behavior, good judgment, and a concern for group safety are the most valuable assets in the outdoors.

DISCOVERY ADVENTURESDesigned for our youngest students, these adventures are the perfect way to introduce budding outdoor enthusiasts into the world of multisport adventure. Get your adrenaline fix on a rushing Colorado river, across a zip line through lush Carolina forests or by riding the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. These adventures are meant to challenge students via introductory level activities, helping build confidence and character along the way.

SERVICE ADVENTURESCommunity Service trips give back to the magnificent areas in which we travel. These destinations thrive with color and cloud-forests, deserts and drumbeats, wildlife and wonder. Whether teaching English or repairing a community center, you will lend your skills, gain new ones, and meet interesting people and witness colorful wildlife. Featuring millions of square miles of terrain still untouched by humanity, Alaska is one of the largest and last true wilderness areas left in the world. The Northern Lights trip explores the most spectacular aspects of this vast, wild land – sea kayaking the stunning shorelines of Prince William Sound, ice climbing the vertical edges in Matanuska, backpacking deep into the remote and verdant Talkeetna Mountains, and whitewater rafting down the glacial-fed Chickaloon River. Test your limits and discover the rewards of experiencing “The Last Frontier” in ways few others can claim.

Notes from the Field

From picking and tooling up 100 foot sheer walls of ice and rappelling our way back down, to staring down seemingly endless crevasses of shining blue ice, the day was full of wonder. We stopped and had lunch near the summit of the Matanuska Glacier, sitting atop nearly 900 vertical feet of ice, before making our way down. While we were sad to see that this was the end of our adventures on the ice, our spirits were lifted when the guides lauded our enthusiasm and technical skills after such a new challenge.

Hike deep into Yosemite National Park as you develop leadership skills and friendships with your coursemates on our Yosemite adventure. Discover the park from every angle as you backpack into its beautiful green meadows and find the same foot holds as some of the world’s most famous climbers as you scale the vertical, granite faces. Run big water on the American River before you challenge yourself on one of America’s premier alpine peaks, Mt. Shasta. End your journey catching waves on the Pacific coastline as you surf one of the world’s most famous destinations.


After our second packs off break, an orb of light broke through the clouds for one of the most gorgeous sunrises I have ever seen. Trudging through the golden yellow light, we worked to find a rhythm of feet and trekking poles. Shocked to think about how much we had already accomplished before the sun even rose, we kept our eyes focused on the peak breaking the clouds, thousands of feet above us.

We finally rounded a bend near the top of the mountain, climbed right over the edge of the crater and down into the summit. Words cannot describe such a phenomenal feeling! Cathryn and I got to watch everyone’s faces and reactions as they reached the crest and spilled over into the crater summit. Everyone made it to the top, which speaks volumes about this group’s chemistry and strength of character.

Take leadership to the next level and experience “living in the moment” on The Grand. Spend the beginning of your adventure hiking deep into the rugged backcountry of Wyoming, through snow-brushed valleys or fishing for fat-bellied trout if you please. Rope in with Exum Mountain Guides for climbing school, then give it everything you’ve got on an attempt of the 13,770-foot-high Grand Teton. The view from the top – and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with gaining it – will make your head spin.


The third day of climbing was definitely the best as we were able to really test our preparation for the Grand with a small summit of Cube Point. On our approach, we encountered a huge bull moose on the trail about 30 yards from us. It was awesome! After pictures were taken, we continued our hike up the trail, scrambled up the ridge and then roped up for a six-pitch climb and traverse. Everyone did brilliantly, especially Chad on the chimney step-across on the first pitch! Upon reaching the top, we were treated to impeccable views of Jenny Lake below.

The next day was yet another fine example of Swiss Bliss. Following our ascent into Champex, we blasted off toward the cloudline. We looped up into the misty alpine air, skipping over swollen creeks and draws as they complied with gravity down the mountain side. Not long after lunch, we emerged from the shroud of cloud and into the glorious sunlight. We placed shades over our eyes, but only because the shining brilliance shone off the glaciated peaks that now met our gaze. Truly magical.

Notes from the Field We quickly packed up the beach and started off for our last few rapids. When the water of the Salmon met the Snake River, we cruised up through Hells Canyon. This was definitely the deepest and most impressive of all the canyons. Along the way, we saw big horned sheep chowing down on the sparse grasses in the steep canyons. We finally stepped off the boats and got back in the vans, sad to leave such an amazing place. Now as we pull back into Jackson, we all reminisce on the great times we’ve had the past two weeks.

The Pacific Northwest is its own little world of adventure with a variety of terrain and activities available for pursuit. Notes from the Field We sat on the bluff and experienced the most incredible wildlife viewing session that I’ve ever been a part of. In about fifteen minutes, we saw harbor seals, purple starfish, huge Lions Mane jellyfish, a bald eagle, two red foxes and several deer. To top it off, Philip calmly pointed out in the distance and directed our attention to the Holy Grail of all Pacific Northwest wildlife: Orca Whales. I honestly felt like I was in a zoo!

Spend a couple of days canyoneering near Moab, Utah, where you’ll rappel down waterfalls and slip down natural waterslides. Notes from the Field After making it through several more rapids, it was time to deflate the fun-yaks in preparation for some of the biggest white water on the entire Colorado River, aptly named “Big Drops.” After safe passage through these exhilarating rapids, we all enjoyed lunch and re-inflated our fun-yaks for the last of Cataract’s white water. By the end of the day, everyone was doubly exhausted, but not so much that they could not enjoy the steak banquet and pineapple upside-down cake prepared beneath a glorious waxing moon.

Notes from the Field We decided to stick around and fish Section Corner Lake for a little while, deep in the heart of the Wind River Range. There we found an incredible pod of Mackinaw (lake trout) that measured between 12 and 18 inches. Every single student caught multiple fish! After our slaying session and a lunch of summer sausage and cheese, we hiked to our next campsite on Trail Creek. Tomorrow, we’ll make our way toward the Snake River for a float trip sure to be filled with action thanks to the cutthroat population as well as stunning views.

Notes from the Field We awoke to sunny blue skies, excited for another day of rock climbing. After a steep but picturesque hike to the crag, we learned about proper climbing techniques and methods from our cheerful guides before giving the routes a shot. Everyone tried at least one of the climbs as we watched and cheered them on from below, excited by their successes. The view from the top was amazing and everyone loved the view from Looking Glass Rock of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

Notes from the Field We set off with our packs on in search of another perfect campsite, and after a breathtaking two mile hike, we found an oasis of a campsite. While everyone set up their tents and enjoyed the gorgeous surroundings, Robert snuck off to set up a piñata in the woods nearby. He returned to the group and announced that he found something incredible in the trees surrounding the campsite. The group was thrilled at the sight of the piñata and delicious candy!

Notes from the Field We quickly packed up, eager to get on the water. We spent the morning rafting more difficult class 3 rapids, and we even got to swim one! Each rapid we successfully rafted was followed up by a “paddle hi-five” and a special team chant. We finished out our time on the river watching the warm sun meet the skyline. Once back at our campsite, we were so tired after the day’s action that many of us snoozed in the sunshine while others chatted or went down to play by the river.

Notes from the Field We jumped aboard one of Jack’s boats and as soon as we were out of the harbor, Larkin spotted a whole pod of dolphins that swam right up to the boat and escorted us all the way to Manta Ray Bay. Here, we would be night snorkeling with enormous manta rays for nearly an hour! It was truly an awesome experience to have 12 to 14 foot manta rays swimming below you in the dark. This night was one that no one will soon forget.

Notes from the Field We spent the next day in the renowned national park of Manuel Antonio. Within minutes of entering, we had already spotted several two-toed sloths, howler monkeys and golden spider monkeys. The jungle runs right up onto the white sand beaches and topaz waters of the Pacific Ocean. After a quick hike with some stunning views, we spent the day wading in the ocean and relaxing on the beach where we were able to witness a surreal sunset over dinner.

Time moves at different paces in Peru. It rushes by as you navigate rapids on the headwaters of the Amazon. It stops entirely as you ascend the famed Salkantay Trail, and it flies backwards as you catch your first glimpse of Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incan Empire. Notes from the Field The next day we again went to work on the community kitchen, moving cement blocks, mixing cement and making one assembly line after the other. We managed to rebuild a corner of the foundation using only mud, water and large stones. That afternoon, after all our hard work, we went ziplining on the highest zipline in South America! It was an unforgettable experience to say the least. Again, we ended our day with dinner, a big bonfire, lots of laughter and sleep.

At our first stop, we swam with half a dozen sea turtles and about twenty sea lions - so much fun! We then snorkeled through the narrow channel formed by the rock walls where we saw rays, turtles and all kinds of fish. When else do you have the opportunity to swim with such creatures in the Galapagos?

It was this overwhelming sense of accomplishment and pride in one another that kept us motivated as we kept on from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak. Finally, after a stunning sunrise, we found ourselves at 19,340 feet having truly made it - together - to the “Roof of Africa.”

That evening, we slept in our private bungalows tucked away in the garden, surrounded by coffee plants and banana trees.

We all agreed we could have spent several days there and still not have seen everything - a true wonder of the world, to be sure!

Notes from the Field Our final day of diving was phenomenal, one to remember forever. We dove at two sites just off of Half Moon Caye. The coral at these sites rose up in a high wall, and another steep shelf dropped off the protected side. We saw some incredible marine wildlife including one barracuda who followed our dive group for the whole underwater session. The friendly fish would swim around our group and even sometimes right through the middle. He allowed us to get up close for some incredible pictures.

A playground for outdoor enthusiasts, Hawaii’s second largest island will challenge you with days spent surfing the rolling waves, paddling the lush coastlines and snorkeling near countless beaches and bays. Solidify friendships and earn community service hours as you work on an organic farm and learn about the fruits of such a friendly and plentiful land. You will, without a doubt, be mesmerized by the ever-changing landscapes, perfect sunsets and breathtaking white-sand beaches.

Notes from the Field The next morning, we teamed up in tandem kayaks and entered the bay as a rainbow was forming near our campsite to the far end of the bay. We landed on a hidden beach around one point of the bay to snorkel the nearby reef. Below the water’s surface, we saw all sorts of gorgeous fish in all sizes and colors. We then enjoyed a hearty breakfast on the beach as Gordon accompanied our meal with his new ukulele skills. Eager to explore our next idyllic location, we finished breakfast in no time and were off and on the water once more.

Get a glimpse of one of the world’s most popular travel destinations as you spend just over 2 weeks exploring the natural wonders of South Africa. You’ll first begin with a visit to Kruger National Park, boasting the largest population of large mammal species in all of Africa’s game reserves. Give back to these plentiful plains by volunteering at a wildlife conservation area before heading coastal for some surfing and snorkeling, just steps from your quaint beachfront huts. Though your time here is short, you’ll make memories to last a lifetime.

Notes from the Field The next day - our first full day of safari - we got our first taste of elephants and lions as they made their way across the plains. We were so close to the elephants that we could hear their tummies rumbling! The lions were a bit further away, situated under a tree and lounging in the sun, but this sighting certainly brought us much excitement as most of us were so eager to see these big cats! We all took tons of pictures and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all these wild animals in their natural habitat.

the FINE PRINTHow to Enroll Apply online early! Because of our limited number of openings for each trip, applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. We begin receiving applications in the early fall and many trips fill quickly, so we urge you to submit your application along with your $800 deposit at the earliest possible date to ensure you get the desired course. In order to keep our groups diverse, Moondance reserves the right to limit the number of students from individual cities and schools. Most trips will fill by early January and some even before Thanksgiving. There is no deadline for submitting applications. After May 1st, you should call the Moondance office to inquire about any available openings.

Application/Deposit To apply, you can submit an application online at www.moondanceadven-tures.com. You need to submit an $800 deposit check, or charge it to your Visa, MasterCard or AMEX. This deposit will be applied towards the full tuition of the program. The deposit is fully refundable if your choice is not available or the applicant is not accepted.

Enrollment and Admission Policies Once we receive your application and deposit, we will contact your teacher references to receive a positive recommendation and then call you to confirm your enrollment. We will then forward to you an acceptance letter and TIP (Trip Information Packet) that will include required forms including, but not limited to, the Moondance Medical Form, Clothing and Equipment List, Travel Information and Acknowledgement of Risk from both Moondance and all subcontracted outfitters for that particular trip. These forms contain important information about our program, the risks associated with the program and your responsibilities. All forms must be completed and signed by participant and parents and/ or legal guardian. Failure to return these in a timely manner will jeopardize your space. Moondance reserves the right to cancel applicants with no return of fees if our forms are not received by May 1, 2014. It is the parent/guardian’s obligation to notify us of any changes in their child’s

physical or emotional condition once their medical form has been returned.

Loyalty Rewards Discount(For discounts to apply, full tuition must be received by March 1st, 2014): • Moondance alumni receive a $200 tuition discount when signing up for a 2014 adventure.In addition, receive a complimentary Moondance embroidered gift from Marmot to all returning alumni. • Receive $100 tuition credit for any Moondance sibling who signs up for a 2014 adventure. Referral Rewards • Receive a $100 tuition credit for referring a friend that signs up for a 2014 Moondance adventure. The referral must list you on their application to receive credit.

Additional Costs/Spending Money Tuition does not include domestic, international or in country airfare (Except Hawaiian Islands, Belize + Costa Rica, Ecuador + Galapagos and South Africa). In addition, spending money and personal gear are not included in the tuition fee. Students should have a small amount of spending money for incidentals such as souvenirs, gifts, showers and personal items.

Trip Cancellation Insurance To insure you against unexpected emergencies, we strongly urge parents to secure their investment by purchasing an inexpensive tuition refund insurance policy. This reimburses you should you have to cancel due to unforeseen reasons. More information is included in your acceptance packet.

Tuition/Final Payment Upon acceptance, the tuition balance is due and must be submitted no later than March 1st, 2014. Applications mailed after March 1st must be accompanied by full payment. All payments must be in U.S. dollars. If final payments have not been received by the March 1st deadline, Moondance has the right to cancel any application for which payments have not been received, and shall have no obligation

to refund payments previously made. Moondance reserves the right to cancel any unpaid applicants whose full tuition is more than 30 days past due with no return of fees.

Refund Policy When you sign up for a Moondance trip, you have accepted a limited space within a small group. Once that space is reserved, we are no longer able to offer it to others. When a student withdraws before the start of their trip, whether personal, academic or medical reason, or if a student withdraws (or is dismissed) after the trip begins because of medical or other reason, Moondance is no longer able to fill that space. Moondance cannot recover course expenses if you cancel, even if due to illness or injury. The seasonal nature of our program prevents any tuition refund, or the reduction of tuition for late arrival, early withdrawal, or cancellation for any reason. Expenses are contracted for the season and are based on a total-group, rather than a per-person basis. Investments have been made in staffing, planning, food and equipment purchases before the trip.

The parent of any applicant who withdraws from his/her trip must do so in writing. If a notice of cancellation is received in writing before February 1st, the applicant forfeits $500 of the $800 deposit. An applicant, who withdraws from his/her course after February 1st but before March 1st, will be refunded the entire tuition, less the $800 deposit. An applicant, who withdraws from his/her trip after March 1st forfeits the entire tuition, provided the trip does not fill. If the trip does fill, then Moondance will refund the entire tuition, less the $800deposit.

Group Placement One of the true benefits of an adventure experience is meeting and living with other students from around the country. The bonds that form over a short period of time cannot be easily duplicated. Each expedition group is usually co-ed and never larger than thirteen students which are grouped by similar age. On almost every trip, we will have multiple groups and it is important to di-vide students by age to create compatible groups. Moondance reserves the right to make the final decision on all groupings. There are always at least two qualified leaders (one male, one female) with each group. It is the Moondance policy that no more than two friends are in the same group. All new applicants must submit a teacher reference to ensure diverse, but workable groupings, and every student is assumed to be highly motivated and group-oriented. In order to keep our groups diverse, Moondance reserves the right to limit the number of students from individual cities and schools. Additionally, while we strive for co-ed groups, Moondance does not guarantee co-ed expeditions.

Special Use Permits Moondance operates under special use permits granted by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service, USDA. We would like to acknowledge the following areas for welcoming Moondance Adventures: Pisgah, Talkeetna, Nantahala, Bridger Teton, Gunnison, San Juan, and Shasta-Trinity National Forests. In addition, Moondance operates under commercial use and concessionaire’s licenses in the Olympic, North Cascades, Mount Rainier, Yosemite, Great Sand Dunes, Hawaii Volcanoes and Grand Teton National Parks.
