General
The motor drive unit ED is to be used exclusively for
operating on-load tap-changers and off-circuit tap-changers in regulating transformers as well as foroperating plunger-core earth-fault neutralizer.
CAUTION
All relevant fire protection regulations must be strictlyobserved.
Lock the motor drive unit using a padlock (not inclu-
ded) to prevent operation by unauthorized personnel.

The modular-designed motor drive unit ED works by
adjusting the operating position of on-load tap-changersand off-circuit tap-changers in regulating transformers tothe individual operating requirements (figs. 2, 3) .
The tap-change operation is activated by starting themotor drive.The on-load tap-changer is set according to the step-by-step operation principle. A single control pulse,triggered by MR voltage regulator for example, initiatesthe tap-change operation.This operation is alwayscompleted regardless of any other control pulsesemitted during the operating time. The next tap-changeoperation can only proceed once the control devices
have been adjusted to their rest positions.
Fig. 1 shows the sequence of a tap-change operation.

All control elements are installed in a closed swing-frame panel located behind the protective housingcover. This panel protects all electrical and mechanicalparts of the motor drive against accidental contact. Thehinges of the swing frame are designed to prevent theframe from banging against the base or cover.
The closed swing frame is attached to the protectivehousing by two spring-supported door bolts. The stan-dard design of the swing frame always opens to the left.
2 Design
2.1 Mechanical equipment2.1.1Protective housing
The motor drive unit ED is characterized by two main
features: its uniform construction for all motor drivedesigns and its modular drive concept.
The motor drive is available in two types of protectivehousing with the same arrangements for the attachmentpoints and the drive shaft (fig. 2 ED 100/200 S andfig. 3 ED 100/200 L ).The protective housing consists of two parts, the hous-ing and the cover, both of which are made of non-cor-roding cast-aluminium. They are finished with a one-layer prime coat (RAL 6019) and a one-layer finishingcoat (RAL 7033). The spaces between the housing andthe cover, as well as all apertures required for operation
(driven shaft, inspection window, aperture for handcrank in special arctic design, etc.), are thoroughlysealed to prevent splashes of water and dust fromgetting inside (IP 56).
The protective housing is ventilated by labyrinth vents,with metal filters on both sides of the housing. The bot-tom of the housing is made up of three plates providingentries for the cables.
2.1.2 Protective housing cover
In the standard design, the cover is attached to thebase by two hinges and it opens to the left. The stan-dard cover has an opening angle of 130°.There is a pocket attached to the inside of the protec-tive-housing cover to hold the connection diagrams.
CAUTION
When manually operating the motor drive unit onlyuse the built-in hand crank. Otherwise, there is a riskof serious or fatal injury.The safety switch in the hand crank disconnects themotor drive circuit at two poles; however, it does notdisconnect the control circuit.

Design
2.1.4 Hand crank
The hand crank is used to manually operate the motordrive in emergencies or for adjustment purposes. It isattached to the upper cover plate inside the protectivehousing.
WARNING
Before opening the swing frame the relevant safetyinstructions must be observed in order to avoidserious or fatal injury.

2.1.7 Control elements
The standard design contains the following controlelements mounted in the upper part of the swing frame(see fig. 4):
- Door contact for switching on the lamp
- Motor protective device
- Control switch “RAISE/LOWER“ to initiate a tapchange operation by hand.
2.1.8 Anti-condensation heater
2.1.5 Indication field
A clearly arranged indication field (fig. 5) is installed in
the upper part of the control panel cover (fig. 4).The data displayed and the displays are detailed asfollows:
- The mechanical operation counter shows the overall number of operations performed by the
motor drive
- The position indicator shows the position of themotor drive and the on-load tap-changer(standard, max. 35 positions)
- The two drag hands indicate the regulating rangecurrently used
- The tap change indicator shows the currentposition of the control cam (33 sections per tapchange operation)
Pointer and operations counter are mechanically drivenand indicate the switching sequence of the motor drive.
The reset-wheel on the operations counter is lead-sealed at the factory.
2.1.6 Hand lamp
There is a 4 W tubular fluorescent lamp (cable lengthapprox. 1 m long) inside the protective housing which isswitched on via a door contact (fig. 4, no.) when thedoor is opened.

Design
The anticondensation heater, fig. 4 (ED 100/200 S:50 W, ED 100/200 L: 60 W) is designed as a panelheater which also acts as the front cover of the swingframe.
NOTE
This new heater design:- is a complete anti-condensation
heater suitable for all climate regions exceptthe arctic.
- saves the need for an anti-condensation coat ifit has a MR-standard inside coat.
- does not require a thermostat or a hygrometer.

2.2 Gearing 2.2.1 Transmission gear
Transmission gear, control gear and the gear for the
indicating equipment are located in the upper part of theprotective housing. They are protected against acci-dental contact by a cover plate.
The entire gearing system (fig. 6) is located behind theupper control panel in the upper part of the housing.The transmission gear is a low-noise, single-stage belt-type gear which has unchanging 16.5 revolutions(= 33 hand crank rotations) per switching operation.
The transmission is a wear-resistant belt.
It contains cam discs which are used to mechanically
trigger the cam switches. The modular-designed posi-tion indicator equipment and the additional cam-ope-rated contacts are driven by the control gear, the indi-cating equipment gear is driven by a cam shaft (fig. 8).
Electrical limit switches prevent overrunning of the endpositions. In addition to this, mechanical limiting devicesprevent tap change operations beyond the regulatingrange.

The transmission gear, control gear and motor unit arewired using black, flexible line material (1.5 mm2).The vibration-resistant plug connector for connectingthe swing frame wiring and the terminal rail wiring islocated below the gear unit block (fig. 10).
2.2.6 Covering for transmission gear,control gear, motor unit
The touch-protected covering of the transmission gear,
control gear and motor unit is provided with an openingfor the hand crank used for manual operation (fig. 11).
The covering is equipped with fixing clamps and hooksto hold the hand lamp and the hand crank.

2.3 Driving motor
The ED motor drive is equipped with a three-phasemotor which covers a wide voltage range as well ascovering the 50/60 Hz frequencies. The motor unit isinstalled below the transmission gear.
The on-load tap changers and their correspondingmotor drive unit designs are listed in a separate selec-tion table.
2.2.4 Position transmitter equipment
The position transmitter equipment comprises:
- the position transmitter,
- the position transmitter module and
- a plug-in connecting cable.
The position transmitter is installed below the controlgear. The position transmitter module for the connectionby the customer is located on the terminal rails (fig. 13).

2.4 Electrical equipment 2.4.1 Swing frame
The electric equipment is mounted on the back of theswing frame (fig. 12). Mounting rails and clamping rails(some two-sided) allow for an easy installation ofcomponents.The individual devices are clearly marked with designa-tions for easier identification on the connection diagramkept in the pocket of the door.
In the standard design, the swing frame is equippedwith the following components:
- anti-condensation heating: designed as a panel heater (temperature increase in relation to ambient
temperature by ∆T ≈ 7 K)
- motor protection with trip coil
- control switch for RAISE/LOWER control
- contactors for RAISE/LOWER- auxiliary contactor for step-by-step operation
- door contact for hand lamp
The cable connection bundle between the swing frame
and the terminal rails has a zip and a strain relief device
on both sides.

The terminal board facilitates an easy electrical connec-
tion of the motor drive unit (fig. 13).

The motor drive unit is installed using 4 stud bolts (not
included in MR delivery) attached to the transformertank. The necessary drill holes are located outside onthe brackets of the protective housing. The drill holearrangement in all ED motor drive designs is identical.
For correct attachment of the 4 stud bolts onto thetransformer tank see the dimension diagram in para-graph 8.4.
If the transformer causes extremely strong mechanicalvibrations, the use of vibration absorbers (not includedin MR delivery) is recommended.
3.2 Installing the drive shafts and the bevelgear
Further information on attaching these drive com-ponents can be found in the Operating Instructions No.
BA 42.
3.3 Coupling on-load tap-changer andmotor drive
The above-mentioned requirements are met by settingthe time at which the diverter switch operation occurs1.5 - 2 sections before the grey area of the tap changeindicator (fig. 14) .
The centre mark in the grey field of the tap-changeindication will be used as reference for followingprocedures.
One tap-change operation is represented by onerotation of the pointer on the tap change indicator. Thisindicator is divided into 33 sections where one sectioncorresponds to one rotation of the hand crank.
The number of sections from the beginning of thediverter switch action until the pointer reaches the
centre mark of the resting range should be equal in bothdirections.

Installation
CAUTION
Make sure that the diverter switch/selector switchcompletes the tap-change operation before the motordrive stops by correctly coupling the motor drive to theon-load tap-changer and also ensuring that the po-sition indication of the on-load tap-changer and themotor drive are the same for each operating position.These measures can prevent damage to the motordrive, on-load tap-changer and the transformer.

CAUTION
The motor drive’s protective housing must not bewarped or deformed in any way when fixing it to thetransformer tank.Make sure the motor drive is mounted vertically andthat its driven shaft is correctly aligned with thevertical drive shaft of the bevel gear in order toprevent damage to the motor drive, the on-load tap-changer and the transformer.
3 Installation

Installation
Carry out any adjustment work by manual operation only.
Attach the hand crank in the motor drive to the shaft end located in the uppercover plate. This activates a safety switch which disconnects themotor drive at two poles.
Make sure the on-load tap-changer and the motor drive are in their adjustmentpositions before commencing any adjustment work.When adjusting, make sure the position indicators
on the on-load tap-changer and on the motor drive are identical.
Couple the motor drive and vertical drive shaft bymounting the coupling brackets.
Turn hand crank in one direction until the diverter switch operation begins.When operating the motor drive manually, observe the tap changeindicator which mechanically reflects the progress of the tap-changeoperation.
Once the diverter switch operation begins, turn the hand crank in the
same direction while counting the sections required for the pointer to reachthe centre mark of the tap-change indicator.Note the determined value A and the direction of rotation.The tap-change operation is completed.

Check the coupling after adjustment work by carrying out a few tap change operations in both directions.Check that the operating positions of the on-load tap changer and the motor drive are identical.

3.4 Electrical connection of the motor drive
Connect the motor drive to mains supply according tothe connection diagramm in pocket of the swing framedoor (fig. 4). The standard terminal block (fig.15) on theterminal rail X1 illustrated in fig.13 is used for thispurpose.
WARNING
Before connecting the motor drive to the mainssupply, the relevant safety instructions must beobserved in order to prevent serious or fatal injury.

4.1 Function test 4.1.1 Preparations
Phase sequence testWhen checking the motor circuit voltage, make surethat voltage applied to the connecting terminals has aclockwise phase sequence.
4.1.2 Checking the step-by-step operation
- Initiate a tap change operation by turning thecontrol switch S3 (fig. 19) and keeping it turnedwhile themotor drive is in operation.
- Check that the motor drive switches off automatically
after performing one tap-change operation and thatthe pointer of the tap-change indicator stopswithin the grey field.
- Carry out this test in both directions.
4.1.3 Checking the end position switches
and the protective device againstpassage of positions
- To check the end position switch, operate the motordrive to the penultimate position by turning thecontrol switch S3. Using the hand crank, manuallyoperate the motor drive to its end position.
- Check that when the S3 switch is turned further inthe same direction the motor drive does notcontinue to operate.
- Using the same procedure, operate the motor driveto the other end position and repeat the abovecheck.
Check that the pointer of the tap-change indication is in
the grey field.To check the protective device against passage ofpositions, operate the motor drive using the hand crankwhile the motor protective switch is activated.Check that the motor protective switch trips after a max.of 3 sections.
4.1.4 Checking the motor protective switch
Check the tripping function of the motor protectiveswitch Q1 (fig. 19) by pressing the test button.
4.2 Commissioning on site
The function tests as per 4.1 are to be repeated beforethe transformer is commissioned.
CAUTION
In case of a longer period before commissioning or ashut down period of more than 8 weeks, the heater ofthe motor drive unit should be connected andoperated.
WARNING
The function test must be performed with the supplyvoltage connected. Make sure that the on-load tap-changer completes the tap-change operation beforethe motor drive stops by properly coupling the motordrive to the on-load tap-changer. Also ensure that theposition indications of the on-load tap-changer andthe motor drive are the same for each operatingposition. These measures can prevent damage to themotor drive, the on-load tap-changer and the trans-former.The relevant safety instructions must be strictlyobserved to prevent serious or fatal injury.
CAUTION
Electrical mains supply
Make sure that the mains supply fulfils all theconnection requirements of the motor drive unit.
WARNING
Under no circumstances is the transformer to becommissioned, if the devices described in 4.1 do notpass the function test. Otherwise serious or fatalinjury may result.

6 Maintenance
The ED motor drive unit does not require regular main-
tenance. However, if used with industrial transformers,our Technical Service department must be contactedafter the unit performs 500.000 tap-change operations.
We recommend that the following control checks becarried out on the motor drive unit during routinetransformer inspections:
- checking that the sealing of the protective housing iswater-proof,
- checking that the built-in electrical heater isfunctioning trouble-free,
- checking the exterior condition of the equipmentinstalled in the motor drive
When inspecting the on-load tap-changer, also carry outa functional test of the motor drive according to 4.1.
