BRITAIN’S first electric carfrom a mainstreammanufacturer is set to be onsale before the year’s out –and it’s going to cause a

shock.Mitsubishi is out to steal a march on

the likes of Mercedes and Chevrolet bybringing its zero emission i MiEV citycar to the UK ahead of the rest.

The Japanese car maker is rampingup production of its electric car in thenext few months as being green is howto be seen in Tokyo and the company’sBritish importer is planning to have200 on the streets before 2010.

But they won’t be cheap. While mostof the first batch will be used in ‘greenfleet’ trials, a few will be available tobuy at an expected price of around£20,000.

That’s more than double the cost ofthe Mitsubishi i car on which thehigh-tech i MiEV is based.

However the real attraction ofbecoming an eco crusader is not justsaving the planet by having a carwhich produces no CO2 or any otherpollutant. They're a bargain to run.

Mitsubishi says the i MiEV – itstands for Mitsubishi InnovativeElectric Vehicle - will cost only about£45 to run over 10,000 miles comparedto the £1,000 it costs to fuel the averagediesel hatchback every year.

On top of that there is no tax to pay,meaning the driver of an electric car is

saving some 95 per cent of theirannual running costs.

Market forces will bring pricesdown eventually and the quirky looksof the i car are all part of theenvironmental image.

The drawback is range and the iMiEV is capable of only 80 to 90 milesbetween charges but that’s more thanenough for most people’s dailycommute or use around town.

Hook it up to the mains overnightand it takes six hours for a fullrecharge. A ‘fast charge’ can beachieved in less than half an hour,powering the batteries up to 80 percent capacity.

For those with a garage or drivewaythat should be no problem but formotorists who have to park in thestreet there is still work to be done.

What is impressive about the iMiEV is how it performs. There is anobvious benefit of taking a tried andtested model and replacing the petrolengine with an electric motor.

The Mitsubishi i is similar in size toa MINI but is a five-door, can seat fouradults in some comfort and hassupermini-sized boot of 246 litres. Sodoes the electric version as the batterypacks are slung underneath not to

impinge on any interior space.The 88 batteries, packed into 22

modules, weigh 200 kilos which reducethe car’s centre of gravity to a pointthat it really handles.

Electric motors produce hugeamounts of torque and the i MiEVaccelerates from 0 to 60mph in lessthan 13 seconds and has a top speed of87mph.

The engine is 330 volt and develops47KW, equivalent to 63bhp. On the roadit’s very lively to drive.

Acceleration from standstill is briskand it can hold its own on dualcarriageways with little tail off asspeed rises.

What is weird is the sound – or lackof it. There is a faint hum from underthe bonnet which rises underacceleration. Other than that all youget is wind and road rumble.

The i MiEV has an auto gearboxwhich actually feels as if it is just onelong gear. As well as park, drive andreverse there are additional gearsettings to increase range and boostbattery recharge under braking.

An eco setting drops the power ofthe engine to 18KW which isappropriate in city traffic and ekes outbattery life.

Around the speedo there is a batterylevel indicator while the rev counter isreplaced with a display showing if thebattery is discharging or recharging.Other than that it is utterlyconventional inside and the car is

fitted with air conditioning, radio, CDplayer and the like.

What is surprising is the i MiEV isgenuinely fun to drive. Not once in thetest drive around Oxford did it leaveyou feeling vulnerable or ‘rangeanxious’ as it has been called.

Oxford is the backdrop for theMorse TV series but in the i MiEV thefeeling was this was the beginning of adifferent code.

Mitsubishi says it intends toguarantee the batteries for 10 yearsand the car will have an expected tenyear or 93,600 mile (150,000 kilometre)warranty. Insurance ratings are still tobe determined, but could be relativelyhigh, reflecting the cost of thetechnology.

With Gordon Brown having said allcars in Britain should be electric orhybrid by 2020 and Boris Johnsonpledging to use a fleet of ‘EVs’ for theLondon Olympics, this is a generationof cars waiting in the wings.

MINI and smart have electric cartrials under way, small brands such asGWizz have little 2+2s on the marketselling mainly in London, whileMercedes and Chevrolet haveannounced they will be puttingelectric or electric hybrids intoproduction next year.

With the big boys getting in on theact supported by their large dealernetworks and service centres, itcannot be long before an electricrevolution is charging everywhere.

LIGHTNING FAST: The BMW M3 Convertible has seismic power and offers a magnificent driving experience

BMW M3 Convertible

SO are we talking muttondressed as lamb or a wolfin sheep’s clothing?Visually, it could be either.The pair of twin exhausts,

pronounced power bulge, 19-inchalloys and flared wheel archessuggest this may be no ordinaryconvertible.

But remove the M3 badge andsome folk could be persuaded that afew bob had been thrown at tartingup a 3-Series.

The answer is probably ‘no’ toboth questions because the BMWM3 Convertible is a full-blownrocket ship on wheels, a car withthe sort of seismic thrust capable ofripping off the lid – with or withoutthe electronics that remove it in 22seconds.

And while were talking figures,here’s a few more to mull over. TheM’s V8 engine management systemis one of the most advanced in theworld, with a direct link to the

company’s Formula One racingprogramme.

It contains more than 1,000individual components includingthree 32-bit processors and canmake up to 200 million calculationsper second. Heady stuff.

So what’s it like to drive the M3?In a word, awesome.

The 4.0-litre engine develops420bhp at a lofty 8,200rpm and, inthe heavier convertible form, canreach 62mph in 5.1 seconds.

While a six-speed manualtransmission comes as standard

the test model was fitted with anew seven-speed M Double Clutchsemi-automatic gearbox.

It costs an extra £2,590 and usestwo clutches to offer lightningchanges without any interruptionin power delivery.

Combined with BMW’sDrivelogic function – which allows

drivers to fine-tune gearchangecharacteristics – the system

provides the sort of full-throttleshifts enjoyed by F1 racers.

The car’s handling though isnear matchless thanks to abalanced chassis and wonderfullypositive feel from the chunkysteering wheel.

And that brings me to anotheroption – the car was fitted withmore than £9,000 worth of extras –in the shape of electronic dampercontrol.

Settings for EDC comprisecomfort, normal and sport, eachselected via a button on the centreconsole.

In normal mode the damping isconstantly adjusted to achieve theoptimum balance for all drivingconditions. Sport stiffens the rideand comfort produces a morecompliant feel, while there’s alsoan M Dynamic mode button whichsharpens the steering and makesthe throttle more responsive.

Inside, the M3’s dash and fasciais fairly bland.

It’s also very comfortable forthose up front, though rear spaceisn’t over-generous and theconvertible – unlike the five-seatsaloon – can only accommodatefour people. Boot space is alsopretty limited.

The £7,300 EZi model also hasa four-speed automatictransmission with switchableoverdrive.

Most recent addition to therange is the Myvi SE which gainsan electric sunroof, reverse parkcontrol, remote central locking

and privacy glass for an additional£800. This means that the MyviEZi SE costs £8,100, whichrepresents a saving of about £300in comparison to buying theoptions separately.

According to Parker’s report,Perodua has two models in theUK’s top ten of slowestdepreciating cars during 2008.

Perodua puts more money back in pockets

CITROEN is to revive thename of the car that has justbeen voted the mostbeautiful ever made.Unfortunately it will not

arrive in the futuristic form of alatter-day Citroen DS, but will bemerely a range of limited-editionsbased on existing models.

There will be the Citroen DS3based on the C3, the DS4 based on theC4 and DS5 based on the C5.

The concept will be revealed atnext month’s Geneva Motor Show inthe form of a DS3 that looks sodifferent from the current model thatit might actually be the basis of aneventual replacement for it.

Meanwhile, the original Citroen DShas been voted the most beautiful carof all time by a panel of eminentautomotive judges including topvehicle designers.

The 20-strong panel placed the DSahead of the Jaguar XK120 andE-Type models, a flurry of Ferrarisincluding the 275GTB and theLamborghini Miura.

With its name derived from Déesse(French for Goddess), the DS wasstyled by Italian sculptor FlaminioBertoni and launched in 1955.

The futuristic shape was applaudedas an instant design classic andduring the next 20 years more than1.5 million cars were bought in arange of specifications.

However, it was not just thefuturistic shape that revolutionisedautomotive design but also theself-levelling suspension, plus powersteering, clutch and brakes that wereyears ahead of their time.

CitroenbringbackDSnameSuzuki claim thatAlto is cleanestSUZUKI is claiming that itsnew Alto model will be thecleanest car of its type whenit goes on sale at thebeginning of March.

The car maker claims theAlto will be the lowest CO2emitting five-door petrolmodel, with an official ratingof 103g/km and costing £35a year in road tax.

Some rival three-doormodels achieve under100g/km, escaping road tax.

Nonetheless, Suzukireckons that its particular

achievement will attractfamily buyers in search of asmall economical andeco-friendly car at a price ofjust £6,795.

The Alto, which will havea Nissan clone in the guiseof the Pixo, is made in Indiaand uses a three-cylinder67bhp 1.0-litre engine.

With economy of 64mpg,the Alto’s main rival will bethe Nissan, which theJapanese company says willundercut the Alto by about£300.
