The central government under Seventh Schedule can pass the legislation
on shipping and navigation on Inland Waterways (IW)
The government previously had declared five inland waterways as
National Waterways
The act declares additional 101 inland waterways into National
waterways (apart from repealing the previous five acts)
The IW has immense potential for passenger and cargo transportation
India has more than 14500 kms stretch of inland waterways but the
transportation by this method is around 3%

India has a coastline of greater than 7500 kms
This project aims to develop port infrastructure
Expected to attract huge investments
The project includes
modernization of our ports and islands
setting up of coastal economic zones
new major ports
fish harbours
One of the objectives is to connect ports with inland waterways
Majority of the investment in development of the ports is expected from the government whereas the development of islands and tourism is expected from the private sector through PPP
