Southeast Louisiana is surrounded by water, a life-giving resource that can suddenly transform into a life-

threatening nemesis. Anyone living here long enough eventually gets caught in a street flood during a downpour. These aren’t the epic floods like that in 2005 due to the failure of manmade structures, but the frequent drowning of low-lying areas in heavy rains.

During the 25 years I’ve gratefully lived in New Orleans, I’ve cleaned out inundated houses four times, lost two cars and safely walked home through ant-infested waist-deep waters carrying my then six-year-old son, Ben. Still, Ben declared it “the worst day of my life!” I’ve adopted my neighbor’s philosophy: “That’s the price we pay for living in paradise.” But the price is too high for many.

Historically, the municipality has turned to more and bigger gray infrastructure, from drain pipes to pumping capacity. This expensive fix isn’t sufficient, sometimes overwhelmed and mostly moves the water from one area to another.

Now more communities, including our own, are incorporating green infrastructure to better address stormwater management. Working with nature is easier, less expensive and more effective than trying to control it. It’s the core nugget I gleaned from a recent Green Keepers program offered through a partnership of Parkway Partners and the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans. I am now more hopeful about the possibilities for remedies at our disposal.

Program attendees learned from local, nationally-recognized experts, how residents can use yard features like rain gardens, bioswales and native plants to slow, retain and diminish runoff into storm drains. It not only helps prevent neighborhood flooding, it relieves pressure on our gray infrastructure; it even filters out pollutants, making water cleaner that does go into drains. We toured area green infrastructure sites that brought the concepts to life and I encourage you to attend when the course is offered again in 2015.

In “Sustainable Cityscapes: Urban America is Going Green in a Big Way,” health and science writer Christina MacDonald explores the many ways U.S. communities are becoming more resilient. Check it out on page 22.

This month, the U.S. Green Building Council, home of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification program, will hold its annual conference in New Orleans. The local chapter will offer tours of green building sites where tour participants will hear from leading green architects and builders in our state. Colleen Morgan provides an overview of what’s coming up on page 20. I can’t wait for the October 20 tour on Living with Water.

Seven years ago this month we launched Natural Awakenings of Southeast Louisiana with your faithful support during the critical post-Katrina period to bring helpful, healing information to our communities as we rebuild stronger and wiser than before. Our region has made great progress, yet the experts at Green Keepers explain there is much more we all can do. Each of us has a role to play.

Milkfancy Organic Day Spa Opens

Milkfancy Organic Day Spa is a petite spa that recently opened

in beautiful downtown Madisonville. Owner Dawn Rogers started Milkfancy as a goat milk skincare line, which has been expanded to a spa that also now provides massage and aesthetic services for clients’ beauty and relaxation needs as well. The ambiance of Milkfancy, the Northshore’s only organic spa, is cozy and charming. “We do not rush our clients and we pay attention to their wishes. Easygoing and friendly from start to finish – we want our clients to feel at home here at Milkfancy,” Rogers enthuses about her spa. Milkfancy’s licensed professionals always give consultations before any service is rendered, so that the client’s concerns are understood and to make the client feel at ease, she adds. Facials at Milkfancy use ModVellum products, a certified organic skincare line. ModVellum products are available for retail at the spa, along with Milkfancy’s own goat milk skincare line, which is great for people with delicate skin, notes Rogers. Massage therapy for pain and relaxation, skincare, manicures, pedicures and waxing is on the menu. In addition to organic skincare, hair removal at Milkfancy uses organic honey wax with argan oil to be gentle on the skin. Nail care employs nontoxic nail polish.

Milkfancy is located at 410 Covington Street in Madisonville on the Northshore. More information on services offered can be seen at MilkfancyDaySpa.com. Services are by appointment only. Schedule appointments by calling 985-974-7994. See ad on page 22.

Volunteers Needed for Ongoing Rebuilding

The LowerNine.org is looking for volunteers to help with their continuing efforts to rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward of New

Orleans. LowerNine.org is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization working toward the long-term recovery of New Orleans’ historic Lower Ninth Ward from the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches of 2005. Many residents are still waiting to get back home. Volunteers do not have to have construction skills specifically. Volunteers help with any number of tasks ranging from siding and roofing, to floor and door installation, to painting and yard maintenance. Commitment to work one day or a year or more are welcome. All help is appreciated. Young volunteers, ages 13 to 17 years, must be with a chaperon. Some volunteer housing is available as well.

More information about volunteering can be found on the website LowerNine.org as well as information on other projects such as urban farming. To volunteer email [email protected] or call 504-278-1240.

Louisiana LMTs Keeping Up

The Louisiana Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) holds an annual educational & business

conference. This year’s primary continuing education topic was special populations, focusing on those who are pregnant, cancer patients, the elderly and people in hospice care. The speaker was Louisianian Susan Salvo, massage therapist, educator and author. Participants learned what is unique to each of the these populations. This is client-centered work in which therapists are aware of the client’s history: body, mind and spirit. There is an in-depth interview with regard to medication, surgeries and specific issues, which allows for the formulation of a treatment plan and identifies any counter indications to the bodywork. With a population that is aging rapidly and a medical system that is strained, massage therapists’ continued training is reflecting the changes so as to step up and assist.

Farm to Table Fresh – Organic Goodness

True farm to table d in ing i s ha rd

to come by, but The Nutrition Company in Mandeville is one of those rare places. Catherine Wilbert, a naturopathic doctor and organic farmer, has combined her passions for healthy living and eating to recreate her store and restaurant into a real farm to table operation. Those familiar with the store will find the same commitment to tasty healthy food – with some new features. Wilbert and her partner, Sharon Schluter, own and operate Big Sky Ranch in Folsom, where many of the offerings are grown or raised. “We harvest tomatoes and peppers in the morning, and by lunch are serving up a fresh batch of Dr. C’s Organic Salsa – it doesn’t get any better than that,” says Wilbert, who more than likely picked them herself. A newer addition in the store is an organic grocery and market, where many offerings from Big Sky Ranch as well as from other local vendors are sold. Wilbert is working with other local farmers to grow organic produce, pastured organic eggs and a varying selection of organic meats and chicken. Wilbert invited all to stop by for breakfast or lunch and check out the new outdoor seating area or order some of the good organic fare to take home. Either way, she wants people to come see the new look and enjoy a real farm to table experience. The Nutrition Company still offers organic breakfast and lunch, nutritional supplements, juices, smoothies, coffees and wheatgrass.

Store hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The kitchen closes at 3 p.m. daily. The Nutrition Company is located at 4350 Highway 22 in Mandeville. See ad on page 23.

healthbriefsA New Direction for Neti PotsUsed for centuries in Asian cultures to

support nasal health and eliminate toxins from the nasal mucosa, neti pots have recently become popular in the Western world and are recognized for their value in preventing and relieving sinus infections. Typically, a mild solution of unrefined sea salt and purified or distilled water is poured from one nostril through the other to flush out unwanted mucus, bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Herbalist Steven Frank, of Nature’s Rite, points to a powerful new paradigm that helps neti pot users deal even more effectively with infection: a regimen of aqueous, colloidal silver and soothing herbal and plant extracts. Frank recommends using the neti pot with a colloidal silver wash that is retained in the nostrils for several minutes. “Bacteria and fungus stick rather well to the nasal mucosa and few are flushed out with simple saline flushes,” he explains. “Most of these nasty pathogens adhere to the mucosa with what is called a biofilm. Within this slime layer, they are well protected and thrive in the warm moist sinuses, so a small saline bath once a day doesn’t bother them much. However, colloidal silver disables certain enzymes needed by anaerobic bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungus, resulting in their destruction. And, unlike antibiotics, silver does not allow resistant ‘super bugs’ to develop.” He also suggests soothing the sinuses with restorative herbal decoctions. Calendula, plantain and aloe contain vital nutrients that soothe and heal, while Echinacea root and grapefruit seed extract offer antimicrobial benefits. Frank emphasizes the importance of using a neti pot safely and responsibly and warns against table salt, which can irritate nasal membranes, and tap water, which may contain contaminants.

Energy Efficiency Improves Family HealthRe s e a rch f r o m C o l u m b i a ,

Maryland’s National Center for Healthy Housing suggests that adding insulation and more efficient heating systems can significantly increase the health of household residents. The researchers studied 248 households in New York City, Boston and Chicago that underwent energy conservation improvements by trained energy efficiency professionals, including installing insulation and heating equipment and improving ventilation. After the improvements, subjects reported reductions in sinusitis (5 percent), hypertension (14 percent) and obesity (11 percent). Although a 20 percent reduction in asthma medication use was reported, two measures of asthma severity worsened; the scientists called for further study of the asthma-related outcomes. A similar study from New Zealand’s University of Otago examined 409 households that installed energy-efficient heating systems. Children in these homes experienced fewer illnesses, better sleep, better allergy and wheezing symptoms and fewer overall sick days. In examining 1,350 older homes where insulation was installed, the research also found improvements in health among family residents.

Lower Breast Cancer Risk by Eating Colorful VeggiesResearch published in the British Journal of Nutrition

discovered that the risk of breast cancer decreases with increased consumption of specific dietary carotenoids, the pigments in some vegetables and fruits. The research was based on five years of tracking 1,122 women in Guangdong, China; half of them had been diagnosed with breast cancer and the other half were healthy. Dietary intake information was collected through face-to-face interviews. The women that consumed more beta-carotene in their diet showed a 46 percent lower risk of breast cancer, while those that consumed more alpha-carotene had a 39 percent reduced incidence. The individuals that consumed more foods containing beta-cryptoxanthin had a 62 percent reduced risk; those with diets higher in luteins and zeaxanthins had a 51 percent reduction in breast cancer risk. The scientists found the protective element of increased carotenoid consumption more evident among pre-menopausal women and those exposed to secondhand smoke. Dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and dandelion greens top the list of sources rich in luteins and zeaxanthins, which also includes watercress, basil, parsley, arugula and peas. The highest levels of beta-carotene are found in sweet potatoes, grape leaves, carrots, kale, spinach, collard and other leafy greens. Carrots, red peppers, pumpkin, winter squash, green beans and leafy greens contain alpha-carotene. Red peppers, butternut squash, pumpkin persimmons and tangerines are high in beta-cryptoxanthin.

globalbriefsCoastal CaretakingZoning Tropical Waters Like Land ResourcesIn the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin, 24 scientists from Canada, the U.S., the UK, China, Australia, New Caledonia, Sweden and Kenya affirm that one-fifth of humanity lives within 60 miles of a tropical coastline, primarily in develop-ing countries. They warn that growing populations and the increasing impact of climate change ensure that pressures on these coastal waters will only grow. Most locations are lacking in holistic, regional management approaches to balance the growing demands from fisheries, aquaculture, shipping, oil, gas and mineral extraction, energy production, residential development, tourism and conservation. Lead author Peter Sale, of the United Nations University’s Canadian-based In-stitute for Water, Environment and Health, states, “We zone land for development, farms, parks, industry and other human needs. We need a comparable degree of care and planning for coastal ocean waters. We subject [the sea], particularly along tropical shores, to levels of human activity as intense as those on land. The result is widespread overfishing, pollution and habitat degradation.” According to the paper, solutions must address a larger geographic scale over a longer period of time; focus on multiple issues (conservation, fisheries enhance-ment and land-based pollution); and originate from a local jurisdiction to gain traction with each community.

Fracking FlubMethane Dangers May Be Three Times the EstimateResults of a meta-analysis of 20 years worth of scientific studies published in Science magazine conclude that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has underestimated the natural gas industry’s climate impact by 25 to 75 percent by not including methane leakage from fracking, gas drilling operations and pipelines. Methane, the main component of natural gas, is a potent greenhouse gas. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researcher Gabrielle Petron voices concern with the discrepancies because, “Emission estimates, or ‘inventories’, are the primary tool that policy makers and regulators use to evaluate air quality and climate impacts.” For a paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, researchers flew aircraft over a heavily fracked region in northeastern Colorado and concluded that emissions from drilling operations were nearly three times higher than an hourly emission estimate published by the EPA.

Clever CollaborationsRenewables Ga in Ground WorldwideExcess heat from London subway tunnels and an electric substation will soon be funneled into British homes, slashing energy costs and lowering pollution, according to the Islington Council. Germany’s renewable energy industry has broken a solar power record, prompting utility company RWE to close fossil fuel power plants that are no longer competitive. RWE says 3.1 gigawatts of generating capacity, or 6 percent of its total capacity, will be taken offline as it shuts down some of its gas- and coal-fired power stations. In China, wind power is leaving nuclear behind. Electricity output from China’s wind farms exceeded that from its nuclear plants for the first time in 2012 and out-produced it again last year, generating 135 terawatt-hours (1 million megawatts)—nearly enough to power New York state. While it takes about six years to build a nuclear plant, a wind farm can be completed in a matter of months. China also employs a recycling-for-payment program in Beijing subway stations that accept plastic bottles as payment. Passengers receive credit ranging from the equivalent of five to 15 cents per bottle, which is applied toward rechargeable subway cards. In the U.S., a newly installed working prototype of a pioneering Solar Road project has raised more than than double its $1 million crowd-funding goal to seed the manufacturing process (Indiegogo.com/projects/solar-roadways). According to the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, over three million American adults have used

acupuncture and their numbers are increasing. What these three million know is that acupuncture works. A large body of scientific data has shown it to be effective in treating a wide variety of conditions.

Acupuncturists must be licensed in Louisiana, but the approach to training and practice are diverse.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese MedicineErin Kenning learned the benefit of acupuncture in college when she experienced acupuncture as treatment for a migraine headache, a condition that had often plagued her since childhood, along with severe allergies. The relief was instantaneous, which made a lasting impression.

When she finished her undergraduate degree she enrolled in The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine’s four year program that led to a Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSOM). She is also certified as a Diplomate in Oriental Medicine (DOM).

Kenning describes her River Ridge practice at Family Acupuncture & Wellness as holistic medicine, drawing from Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, advanced training in NAET Allergy Elimination Technique, herbals and supplements to support the body’s innate ability to heal. She is now adding functional medicine to her tools. Adding lab tests helps her to objectively determine how well organs and systems are working.

People come to Kenning for a wide array of issues. Common complaints are fertility, menstrual and menopausal concerns; allergies; skin disorders; chronic fatigue; fibromyalgia and auto-immune conditions.

Kenning states she especially likes working with people who have fallen through the cracks of conventional health care – the ones who are tired or don’t feel well, but are told that nothing wrong can be found. Helping these folks find the root cause of their issues and getting them back to health is very satisfying.

Veterinary AcupunctureTraditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, though fairly recent in the West, has been used in China for thousands of years. It is an adaptation and extension of Traditional Chinese Medicine used to treat humans.

At Veterinary Holistic Healing in Covington, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Janice Posey provides a holistic approach to pet health care that combines acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, food therapy, nutritional supplements and minimal core vaccines/titres.

“I use Chinese herbal formulas and food therapy which enhances the acupuncture treatment and allows for quicker resolution of the condition,” she says.

Pets are brought in most often for pain related to musculoskeletal problems such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, disc disease, as well as skin allergies, cancer, seizures and geriatric condition. Posey also treats pets for nutritional needs, weight management, pain management, neurological conditions, intestinal problems, allergic dermatitis, kidney and liver disease, respiratory and hormonal disease.

Patients are seen in a relaxed and quiet atmosphere with soothing music and lavender aromatherapy to relax the patient. One patient is treated at a time with the owner close and present. There is a thorough exam and discussion of the pet’s condition and owner’s concerns, as well as food therapy that would be helpful.

Posey is pleased that acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine is a rapidly advancing field of veterinary medicine with evidence-based research and results. She sees movement

within the American Veterinary Medicine Association toward board certification.

Integrative Medicine ApproachIntegrated Pain and Neuroscience (IPN) is a medical practice specializing in pain management, where medical acupuncture is offered as one of the non-surgical and less invasive options. Acupuncture is commonly used at IPN for arthritis, pain after surgery, headaches, low back, neck and muscle pain, among other conditions.

Dr. Eric I. Royster, founder of the practice, and Dr. Aaron J. Friedman are both trained in medical acupuncture. Royster was the first physician to practice medical acupuncture in the New Orleans area.

Medical acupuncture is the term used to describe acupuncture by a doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine who also has been trained in acupuncture as a specialty.

The medical staff of IPN consists of specialists trained in pain medicine, neurology, medical acupuncture, anesthesiology and psychiatry – so as to provide the most options and

comprehensive care under one roof to patients suffering from pain.

Other innovative treatments and procedures offered at IPN include spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal drug delivery, minimally invasive lumbar decompression, as well as neurology for such conditions as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, neuropathy and neurological disorders.

Joining the medical team this year are Dr. Domenick Grieshaber, a pain medicine specialist, and Dr. Andrea O’Leary, a specialist in adult and child psychiatry. The practice now has offices in New Orleans, Marrero, Slidell, Chalmette and Destrehan.

BRINGING MORE THAN HOMEWORK HOMEBy Ryan Hogan

It’s that time of year when we’re sending our kids back to school. Unfortunately, while schools are good places to learn they are great places to catch a disease. In fact, children’s Up-per respiratory illnesses (URI’s) cause more doctor visits and missed school days than any other illness in the US. Luckily, there are a few things you can do at home to help reduce the chances of your child getting sick at school this year.

HOW?

Before we talk prevention, we need to know how infection spreads. Many childhood illnesses are caused by viruses and bacteria that are transferred from person to person. URI’s increase in fall and winter as we spend more time crowded indoors. All it takes is one sick child, going to school for the spread to begin. Small droplets from a child’s cough or sneeze travel through the air and land on surfaces like desks, doorknobs and people. These germs are easily spread when someone touches the contaminated object and then pro-ceeds to touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Children’s immune systems are less mature than those of adults, so they’re more vulnerable to these germs. Washing your hands and your nasal passages and also keeping their hands away from their nose, eyes and mouth are the most preventative habits to form at a young age.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Our best defense is to stop cold germs where they breed. Good hand-washing is the most effective way to prevent bac-teria and viruses from spreading. Wash your hands after using the bathroom, blowing your nose, handling trash and prior to touching food to help eliminate germs. Soap and water should be used for 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice). Using alcohol-based hand cleaners is also effective. Remind your child to use the

sanitizer before eating snacks, lunch and after using a shared computer mouse, pencil sharpener, water fountain or other community objects.

Now, most people know we need to wash our hands, but one thing most people don’t really relate their health to is nasal hygiene. Using a saline spray with xylitol, such as Xlear Nasal Spray, is safe for all ages. Research has shown this natural sweetener is useful in preventing bacterial otitis media (ear infections), among other upper respiratory problems that are most likely to occur in fall and winter months. Additional xylitol studies have also shown a significant reduction in asth-ma attacks when a xylitol nasal spray is used on a daily basis. Xylitol affects nose and throat bacteria in two ways:

• Decreases the adherence of harmful bacteria on their surface cells.

• Stimulates the body’s own natural defense system

Since the average American child has six to ten colds a year, using a xylitol nasal spray is a safe and effective way to pro-mote better upper respiratory health, year round.

FINAL HEALTHY TIPS

In addition to frequent hand-washing, teach your child some other school health basics:

• Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.

• Give your child a package of tissues to keep in his or her desk.

• Encourage your child not to share water bottles, food or other personal items.

• Ask your child’s teacher to include hand-washing time before lunch or snacks.

• Have your whole family practice nasal hygiene and the use of xylitol saline spray like Xlear.

Even with all of these tips, your kids are bound to come down with something over the course of the school year. We all get sick at some point or another, forming healthier habits and maintaining a positive attitude is all we can do as parents.

Nutrient density—an acknowledged characteristic of apples—is considered the most significant qualification

for a superfood. “It’s one of the healthiest foods,” advises Case Adams, from Morro Bay, California, a naturopathic doctor with a Ph.D. in natural health sciences. Apples’ antioxidant power alone could elevate it to status as a superior superfood. Eating apples could help ward off America’s most pressing yet preventable, chronic illnesses, that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cites as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Strategic EatingMorwenna Given, a medical herbalist and Canadian member of the American Herbalists Guild, from Toronto, explains why and shares an analogy, “The normal metabolic processes of oxidation produce reactive oxygen species (free radicals) with unpaired electrons that hunt and steal partner electrons from the body’s cells. Imagine an electrical plug wherein the grounding wire has been eliminated or compromised. There is nothing to prevent a surge or fire.” This is comparable to what happens to a body impacted by a poor diet, lack of exercise, stress and illness; its healthy grounding is compromised. When the overall damage to cell structure overwhelms the body’s innate antioxidation defenses, conditions are ripe for disease and accelerated aging. Foods high in antioxidants, like the apple, help to neutralize the damage and heal bodily tissues. Flavonoids—like the quercetin just beneath the peel—are another of the apple’s powerful nutrient partners, notes Adams in his book, The Ancestors Diet. So, even when making

An A for ApplesIt’s a Top-Ranked Superstar Fruit

applesauce, including the peel is vital. With the exception of vitamin C, all other nutrient compounds remain intact when the fruit is cooked. Subtle differences in polyphenol levels exist among apple varieties, according to Linus Pauling Institute testing. Polyphenol compounds ultimately activate the fruit’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Northern spy, Fuji and especially red delicious varieties are the richest in antioxidants; empire and

golden delicious harbor relatively low levels. “Some older varieties that had lost popularity with large-scale commercial farmers are now being grafted again, thanks

to a return to organic practices,” remarks Meredith Hayes, schools and student nutrition senior manager at FoodShare, a leading North American food security organization. Note that conventionally grown apples top the Environmental Working Group’s list of 48 fruits and vegetables tested for pesticide residue (ewg.org/foodnews/list.php). That’s yet another sound reason, along with better taste and nutrition, to go organic.

Good Genes“The purpose of any seed is to replicate the species,” explains Given. “The pulp around the seed protects and feeds the seed until it’s burrowed into the soil and germinates. Older species evolved to be protective of their seeds to survive against pests and other insults. Commercially grown produce, however, has generally bred out the secondary metabolites that house so many of a plant’s nutrients.” It helps to know that imperfect-looking food has potentially synthesized more sugars and nutrients in response to stress in order to survive, making blemishes or irregular shapes more appealing as consumers discover the core value of non-homogenized fruit. By recognizing and appreciating the apple during this season’s harvest, we honor its versatility, affordability, broad availability and culinary flexibility.

Today, buzzwords like “sustainability” and “green building” dominate discussions on how to overcome

the unhealthful effects of climate change, extreme local weather events and pervasive pollution. Now, a growing body of research indicates an unexpected upside of living greener; it not only makes us healthier, but happier, too. It’s all helping to spread the “green neighborhood” idea across the U.S., from pioneering metropolises like New York, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, to urban centers like Cincinnati, Detroit and Oakland, California.

Rethinking RedevelopmentA sustainable, or “eco”-city, generally runs on clean and renewable energy, reducing pollution and other ecological footprints, rather than on fossil fuels. Along with bui lding ent i re eco-cities, developers also are striving to replace hard-luck industrial pasts and turn problems such as depopulated urban cores into opportunities for fresh approaches. “We are having a major rethink about urban development,” says Rob Bennett, founding CEO of EcoDistricts (EcoDistricts.org), a Portland-based

nonprofit skilled in developing protocols for establishing modern and sustainable city neighborhoods. The group has recently extended help to seven other cities, including Boston, Denver and Los Angeles, applying innovations to everything from streetscapes to stormwater infrastructure. “The failures of the old, decaying urban and suburban models are evident,” says Bennett. “We’re now learning how to do it well and create environmentally sustainable, people-centered districts.”

Healthy HousingThe concept of home is undergoing a radical makeover. From villages of “smallest houses” (usually no bigger than 350 square feet), to low-income urban housing complexes, people interested in smaller, more self-sufficient homes represent a fast-growing, increasingly influential segment of today’s housing market, according to experts such as Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big House. Google reports that Internet searches for information on “tiny houses” has spiked recently. Economic freedom is one factor motivating many to radically downsize, according to Bloomberg News (Tinyurl.com/TinyHouseDemand). Cities nationwide have overhauled their building codes. Cincinnati, for example, has moved to the forefront of the eco-redevelopment trend with its emphasis on revamping instead of demolishing existing buildings. Private sector leaders are on board as well; a transition to buildings as sustainable ecosystems keeps gaining ground through certification programs such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and the “living building” movement begun by Seattle’s Cascadia Green Building Council has gone international.

Friendly NeighborhoodsWalkability is “in” these days, along with bike paths, locavore shopping and dining and expansion of public destinations, all of which draw residents out to meet their neighbors. This “new urbanism” is evident in places like Albuquerque’s emerging Mesa del Sol community and Florida’s proposed Babcock Ranch solar-powered city. While public and private sectors

are involved, residents are the catalysts for much of the current metamorphoses. Whether it’s a guerrilla gardener movement—volunteers turning vacant lots and other eyesores into flowering oases—creative bartering services or nanny shares, people-helping-people approaches are gaining momentum. The Public School, an adult education exchange that began in Los Angeles in 2007 and has since spread to a dozen cities worldwide, the Seattle Free School, the Free University of New York City, and Washington, D.C.’s Knowledge Commons all have taken the do-it-yourself movement into the realm of adult education. The latter offers more than 180 courses a year, most as free classes offered by and for local residents encompassing all neighborhoods, with topics ranging from urban foraging and vegan cooking to the workings of the criminal justice system.

Upgraded TransportationWith America’s roads increasingly clogged with pollution-spewing vehicles, urban planners in most larger U.S. cities are overseeing the expansion of subway and light rail systems, revamped street car systems and even ferry and water taxi services in some places. Meanwhile, electric vehicles (EV) got a boost from four New England states, plus Maryland, New York, Texas and Oregon, which have joined California in building networks of EV charging stations, funding fleets of no- or low-emission government cars and making green options clearer for consumers. If all goes as planned, the nine states estimate that 3.3 million plug-in automobiles could hit the streets by 2025. Mass transit, biking and walking are often quicker and cheaper ways to get around in densely populated urban centers. Car sharing, bike taxis and online app-centric taxi services are popular with

New York City residents taking an urban walking tour rated the experience better and more exciting when it included an urban garden.

increasingly car-free urban youth. Boston’s Hubway bike-sharing program addresses affordability with a $5 annual membership for low-income residents. One common denominator of the new urbanism is an amplification of what’s considered to be in the public welfare. Through partnerships among public and private sectors and community groups, organizations like EcoDistricts are developing ways to help communities in the aftermath of natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes, seasonal flooding and water shortages. Coastal cities, for example, are grappling with ways to safeguard public transit and other vulnerable infrastructure. Designing for better public health is a central tenet of sustainability, as well. Active Design Guidelines for promoting physical activity, which first gained traction in New York City before becoming a national trend, intend to get us moving. Banishing the core bank of elevators from central locations, architects substitute invitingly light and airy stairwells. Evolving cityscapes make it easier for commuters to walk and bike. Ty son ’s Co rne r, ou t s i de o f Washington, D.C., has made sidewalk construction integral to the overhaul of its automobile-centric downtown area. Memphis recently added two lanes for bikes and pedestrians along Riverside Drive overlooking the Mississippi River, while Detroit’s HealthPark initiative has many of the city’s public parks serving as sites for farm stands, mobile health clinics and free exercise classes.

Clean EnergyThe ways we make and use energy are currently being re-envisioned on both large and small scales. Solar cooperatives have neighbors banding together to purchase solar panels at wholesale prices. Startup companies using computer algorithms map the solar production potential of virtually every rooftop in the country. However, while solar panels and wind turbines are rapidly becoming part of the new normal, they are only part of the energy revolution just getting started. In the past several years, microgrids have proliferated at hospitals, military bases and universities from Fort Bragg, in North Carolina, to the University of California at San Diego. These electrical systems can operate in tandem with utility

companies or as self-sufficient electrical islands that protect against power outages and increase energy efficiency, sometimes even generating revenue by selling unused electricity to the grid. While still costly and complicated to install, “Those barriers are likely to fall as more companies, communities and institutions adopt microgrids,” says Ryan Franks, technical program manager with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.

Local FoodWhat started with a few farmers’ markets feeding urban foodies has given way to a growing local food movement that’s beginning to also reach into low-income neighborhoods through mobile markets, a kind of farmers’ market on wheels, and an explosion of urban gardens and city farms. Ohio City Farm (OhioCity.org) grows food for in-need residents on six acres overlooking the Cleveland skyline. In Greenville, South Carolina, the Judson Community Garden is one of more than 100 gardens in the downtown area, notes Andrew Ratchford, who helped establish it in a neighborhood four miles from the nearest supermarket. Giving residents an alternative to unhealthy convenience store fare is just one of the garden’s benefits, Ratchford says. “We’re seeing neighbors reestablish that relationship just by gardening together.”

Waste ReductionWhile cities nationwide have long been working to augment their recycling and find more markets for residents’ castoffs, many are becoming more sophisticated in repurposing what was formerly considered trash. Reclaimed wood flooring in new homes and urban compost-sharing services are just two examples characterizing the evolution

in how we dispose of and even think about waste. We may still be far from a world in which waste equals food, as described by environmental innovators William McDonough and Michael Braungart in their groundbreaking book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. Nevertheless, projects certified as cradle-to-cradle are cutting manufacturing costs and reducing pollution. For example, carpet maker Shaw Industries Group, in Dalton, Georgia, reports savings of $2.5 million in water and energy costs since 2012, when it improved energy efficiency and began using more renewable material in its carpet tiles. Shaw is spending $17 million this year to expand its recycling program. Stormwater runoff is a pervasive issue facing older cities. Many are now taking a green approach to supplementing—if not totally supplanting —old-fashioned underground sewage systems. Along with creating new parks and public spaces, current public spaces are often reconfigured and required to do more. Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, among others, are instituting carefully planned and built green spaces to soak up rainwater and cut down on runoff into sewer drains—taking motor oil and other pollutants with it. Using revamped sidewalk, parking lot and roof designs, plus rain gardens designed to filter rainwater back into the ground, municipalities are even successfully reducing the need for costly underground sewer system overhauls. The proliferation of rooftop gardens in places including Chicago, Brooklyn and Washington, D.C., and new green roof incentives in many cities nationwide further exemplify how what’s considered livable space is expanding. Altogether, eco-cities’ new green infrastructure is saving cities billions of dollars and improving the quality of life for residents by adding and enhancing public parklands and open spaces, a happy benefit for everyone.

adds protection to devices. Going a step further, smart strips automatically power off devices that are not in use.

In a home with a $100 monthly electric bill, curbing phantom energy use can save $10 – which can be used to pay for something else.

Here are other energy saving ideas from the U.S. Department of Energy:

• Seal air leaks around windows, doors and air ducts.

• Switch to energy-efficient CFL light bulbs.

• Properly maintain chimneys and close the flue or stopper when not in use.

• Install solar lighting for maintenance and cost-free pathway, wall and security lighting.

• Install low-flow water fixtures to conserve energy while conserving water.

• ENERGY SAVER appliances can result in up to 75 percent less energy usage.

• For home offices, laptops use less energy than desktop computers.

Phantom of the Outletby Colleen Morgan

October is National Energy Action Month. The intention here is to find and eliminate wasted energy

use at home and work.Phantom or vampire energy is not

a Halloween goul, but the energy that appliances and electronic devices devour when not actually in use. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that up to 75 percent of the electricity consumed by household electronics is consumed while they are turned off.

Many appliances and electronic devices have a standby mode, which functions to draw power to maintain such features as the television’s settings or the clock on the microwave. Leaving a cell phone charging longer than necessary, over night for instance, is another way to consume energy without benefit. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that leaving these devices on standby or running longer than needed adds about 10 percent to the average utility bill – or $100 a year for a typical household.

Table A lists the common contributors to phantom load. Power strips are included, but they can be turned off and, if all other devices are plugged into a power strip, then all can be powered off at once.

Saving energy is about learning a new behavior. For example, when sitting down to watch TV or use the DVD player, the first step is to plug it in, then unplug it afterwards. Another energy saving habit is to put the computer on sleep mode,

Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that is often sought out initially as a drug- and surgery-

free approach to treating pain, but more people are using chiropractic care to maintain good health long after the pain is resolved.

Although chiropractors may offer

different services and use different chiropractic techniques, like most holistic approaches, all chiropractic seeks to root out the cause of pain or illness rather than just treat symptoms.

Upper Cervical Health Care Dr. Joshua Rilette, founder of Upper

Expanding Roles of the ChiropractorFrom Last Resort to First Line Healthcareby Frances Burns

Cervical Family Chiropractic, located in the Lakeview area of New Orleans, affirms that pain brings most people to a chiropractor, but laments that by the time some come to a chiropractor, a little pain has grown into a big one, which then takes longer to heal.

Rilette specializes in upper cervical chiropractic care and is the only chiropractor in New Orleans certified in this specialty of chiropractic. He explains that this chiropractic technique is different in that there is no pulling or jerking, but rather it focuses on removing nerve interference to restore communication between the brain and body through precise, controlled and gentle corrections that allow the head, neck and spine to return to the proper position, which allows the body to heal itself.

A vast array of conditions have been helped with upper cervical care, including diabetes, high blood pressure, lower back pain, migraine headaches, asthma, ear disorders, digestive disorders, sleep disorders, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, depression and more, based on published scientific and case studies.

Just as important as getting back to health is staying there. This is where Rilette sees the greatest potential for upper cervical care. Achieving health and maintaining it must address the three types of stressors we all have in a modern world, he says – physical, emotional and chemical. In his practice he uses upper cervical chiropractic and complements this with nutrition, hormone balancing,

Rather than coming to chiropractic as a last resort, Rilette expects to see more people using it as the first line of defense in prevention and the path to health.

Removing the Obstacles to WellnessFor 27 years Dr. Debbi Hannan has provided a holistic approach to wellness that goes beyond a focus on structure alone. “Our focus is on removing hindrances to health, including a functional medicine approach, diet, lifestyle and nutrition,” Hannan explains. Hannan has a masters in nutrition and is certified with the Institute of Functional Medicine as well as being a licensed chiropractor.

In her practice at Chiropractic Health Center & Holistic Wellness Services in Metairie she sees three main tracks of entry: chiropractic, wellness consults and the Ideal Protein diet program. Many come in for reasons in one of these three tracks, have success and cross over to other services, she says.

“We also have state of the art technologies that are not found in most chiropractic offices, such as the DRX 9000 for non surgical treatment of lumbar herniated and bulging discs, percussion for myofascial release, cold laser therapy for many musculoskeletal conditions, including carpal tunnel and frozen shoulders. We also have Far Infra Red Sauna Therapy and EB Cellular Cleanse for detoxification and Endermologie and Zerona Lipo Laser for body beautification.”

Hannan sees a bright future for chiropractic as the road to health. “Our focus is health and wellness. We find people want evidence based information and direction regarding how to be proactive in their personal health, whether it’s pain relief, weight loss or help achieving their wellness goals. We are here to provide that. We do this daily and make a difference in the lives of people we serve. We have had a good track record for 27 years.”

Chiropractic with CareDr. Nancy Gravel of Care Chiropractic in Mandeville has found that over the years, many people come to her for pain

relief but then stay for total health care. In fact, she notes an increasing trend of individuals who are “learning to use chiropractic as a gateway to health care and not something to try after all else fails.”

During her 30 year practice on the Northshore, Gravel has treated thousands of people and says she has seen chiropractic help people resolve long standing health problems without drugs or the risk of surgery. She named her practice Care Chiropractic, because she and her staff really do care, she explains. They take the time to explain and make patients feel comfortable and appreciated.

The services of fered at Care Chiropractic include chiropractic, massage therapy, physical therapy and Brain Corp Therapy. A licensed massage therapist works on staff with her.

Braincorp therapy is a neurofeedback technique used to treat neurological based conditions such as ADD/ADDHD, autism, post stroke, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, insomnia, memory loss, PTSD, anxiety disorders , traumatic brain injury and more. An informational

Total health care is offered at Care Chiropractic through a combination of chiropractic adjustment, massage, physical therapy and education in lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise, which Gravel insists is very important. She says some folks continue chiropractic care on some type of period basis for the rest of their lives as good health maintenance, while others seek care only for episodes of neck or back pain.

New Cancer Test for DogsDetects Illness in Time for Effective Treatment

by Shawn Messonnier

the course of the disease is crucial for beginning effective treatment and better outcomes. Until recently, the answer to their question was no. As a result, most owners have remained unaware of the problem until the cancer was well advanced and had spread throughout the pet’s body. While chemotherapy can help some pets, the treatment is unable to heal most of them due to the advanced stage of most diagnosed cancers, which typically already have been active for six to 12 months or longer. Early diagnosis would allow both traditional and natural therapies to be more effective. In some cases, chemotherapy might not even be needed, because natural medicines such as astragalus, essential fatty acids, mushroom extracts, ginseng and green tea may be able to reverse the cancer at its earliest stages. Fortunately, dog owners can now secure an accurate early diagnosis using a new blood panel costing less than $200, including lab processing, that enables veterinarians to detect cancer and other inflammatory diseases before a pet becomes ill. The tests provide valuable information about the dog’s health before overt signs of disease are observed, damage occurs and treatment options become more limited and expensive. will be available soon. The tests measure several aspects of cell irregularity, including abnormal cell division and systemic inflammatory activity, by detecting any increased levels of thymidine kinase and C-reactive protein in the pet’s body. A study by California’s Veterinary Diagnostics Institute’s VDI Laboratory applying the new blood panel tests to 360 dogs followed their incidences of cancer and other serious diseases for up to a year. The researchers found that nearly all of the cancers that occurred were detected four to six months prior to the pet showing outward signs. Because the cancers were detected early and treated before the pet became overtly ill, costs to the pet owner were greatly reduced and the effectiveness o f cancer t r ea tmen t improved . The new cancer screening tests, which are designed to be part of a routine wellness plan, constitute the most comprehensive single blood diagnosis available in monitoring overall canine health. It’s just as important to check the vitamin D status of canine patients. Low levels contribute to increased incidence of cancer and infectious diseases, according to a study published in the journal Veterinary and Comparative Oncology. Supplementing vitamin D levels is easy and inexpensive and may help reduce the incidence of serious disease later in life. While the new blood panel tests have been shown to be highly accurate in early cancer detection, any test can miss it if the number of cancer cells is too small. Therefore, pets with negative test results should be retested every six months, while positive results prompt further diagnostic tests and initial treatment. Pets with cancer also benefit from these tests because they allow the vet to fine-tune a treatment plan and determine when a cancer may be coming out of remission. The screening is recommended for all dogs 5 years of age and older. Only a small amount of blood is needed and results are available within a few weeks.

’s Wellness

Hello Everyone,

Please return your hearts and lives to God. We need to remember our Health is like a four legged stool - Spiritual, Mental, Emotional & Physical; the stool’s stability is dependent on the balance of all four legs.

God is Love. Love thrives because it is a Gift from God and has the power to destroy evil. Love is so important for with love, one can defeat evil but without love, evil spreads. Love is not selfish. Love is generous, forgiving and untainted by the sin of pride. You must ask God, every day, for the Gift of Love and when you are given this, use it as your armor against hatred. Love, when present in a pure soul, attracts hatred from those souls who have banished God from their lives. They cannot bear the Light of God, which shines from the souls of those who are filled with God’s Love. Where there is love, there is the Presence of God.

The Evil One is incapable of love, but instead is self-obsessed with what he believes to be his power and greatness. When he infests souls, the first thing he does is to destroy love within the soul. When he achieves this, he will instill a terrible hatred in that soul and it is this hatred which causes division. Division and disagreements, inspired by hatred, can lead to desperate deeds carried out by one soul against

another. These hate-filled deeds can very often lead to terrible cruelty and even murder. The

sin of pride is instilled in souls, who open themselves up to the devil and this leads

to ruthless ambition and greed. Go now in the knowledge that Love must be

used to help the souls of all those who are in great need of God’s mercy. Please recite this Crusade Prayer for the Gift of Love.

For the Gift of Love: O God, please fill me with Your Love. Help me to share the Gift of Love with all those

in need of Your Mercy. Help me to love You more. Help me to love all

those in need of Your Love. Help me to love Your enemies. Allow the love

You Bless me with to be used to engulf the hearts of everyone I come into contact

with. With the Love, which You infuse in my soul, help me to conquer all evil, convert souls and

defeat the devil and all those wicked agents of his, who try to destroy the Truth of Your Holy Word.
