Life after cancer can be a difficult ordeal. Scene promoter, DJ, and Rein[Forced] frontman Jim Semonik knows this only too well. Having survived stage 2B colorectal cancer in 2008, Semonik created one of the most successful compilations in any scene, with the help of 83 musicians—Electronic Saviors: Industrial Music To Cure Cancer. The set was well received by press and critics, and raised over $20K for charity.
Now, with Volume 2, Semonik has assembled a cast of 142 artists from all over the world to take on all forms of cancer. He returns with all guns blazing, with new, rare, and exclusive tracks from God Module, System Syn, Project Pitchfork, hocico, Blutengel, The Dark Clan, Rein[Forced], 16volt, Ayria, Left Spine Down, Panic Lift, and much more.
This massive six-disc box set is available with gorgeous artwork from Jeff Confer and Samantha Johnson. Presented in a lovely eight-panel digipak with a 16-page booklet, Jim’s quest to bring this disease to an end through music has grown by leaps and bounds. Jim dedicates this body of work to all who have suffered with cancer, as well as survivors and loved ones touched by the disease.
“A monumental effort … the most exhaustive anthology of the industrial scene ever released (beating previous efforts by the Ras Dva, Wax Trax, and Cleopatra labels).” — PITTSBURGh POST-GAZETTE
“In the age of insincere celebrities tripping over themselves putting their name to all sorts of charitable organizations, Electronic Saviors is legitimate and refreshing.” — GRAVE CONCERNS
“Easily one of the best compilation purchases a fan of industrial music can buy.” — BEhOLDER MEDIA

PreEmptive Strike 0.1 was created in 2002 on the island of Crete by Jim “The Blaster” and Cryon. Having previously worked together on electronic projects, they decided to form a band to make the kind of music they enjoyed, combining the harsh dark electro/EBM sound with powerful melodies, Eastern elements, and sci-fi themes. PreEmptive Strike 0.1 joined Metropolis Records for the release of The Kosmokrator in 2010 and now, the band returns with its new album T.A.L.O.S. Dark aggressive melodies, Middle Eastern flourishes, harsh vocals, and an intriguingly original blend of influences from all over the globe make this album a compelling addition to any electro fan’s collection.

The Home of Easy Credit is the eponymous debut recording from husband & wife team Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen and Tom Blancarte. Taking their name from a department store sign in a dilapidated section of downtown Houston (Blancarte’s native state), the duo draws their inspiration from the gradual awareness of the decline of civilization that permeates our culture. Hailing from a remote rural region of Denmark, Jensen uses subtle and not-so-subtle electronics to blend her vocal, saxophone, and flute work with Blancarte’s furious bass playing, creating one of the most unique sound worlds in contemporary music.

Video Love’s debut album Mon Ange is a unique and powerful blend of melody, driving beats, and found sounds. These nine tracks combine French vocalist and drummer Elmapi’s playful compositions with Matterlink’s re-sampling of audio from forgotten B-movies. The result is a dense hybrid of electronica, rock, and pop genres. Elmapi has previously released several solo albums, while Matterlink is also known as filmmaker James June Schneider (who directed The Make-Up’s “Blue is Beautiful” video). Together, the duo has brought their worlds into this soundtrack to a parallel universe.

Chrome Jackson is a steely-gray, hard metal of lustrous sound-scrapes and bruises. Poked, plucked, and prodded to a perennial high polish, Chrome Jackson’s debut album Chrome Forest drags listeners knuckle-first through a corrosive wilderness of winding vascular tissues, interwoven to form a hard psyche. Filled with innovative guitar wrangling and atonal six-string scrambling, Chrome Forest’s towering electro-plated frondescence gives way to reveal a dense, chromium-infused understory of infinite realms; a web of overgrown tangles and knots, spaghetti strung in service to a photosynthetic ecosystem out of control. The roots run deep.

A Jumper’s Handbook is the debut album by Doomsday Student, whose bio reads as follows: You know who these men are. They have been other men. Who they were before does not matter. What matters most is who they are now. These men, with two menacing guitars, violent drums, and wild words will fill that void in you. They will build bunkers out of your bones. They will make weapons out of your teeth. They will drink your tears and feed on your meat. All of this will be outlined, annotated, and acted upon in A Jumper’s Handbook, their debut album, which teams three-quarters Arab On Radar with three-quarters Chinese Stars and a pinch of Athletic Automaton and Chrome Jackson for decidedly devastating results.

Nick Sakes boasts one of those impeccable underground rock track records. His discography to date encompasses three brilliant, insular projects: prog-minded post-hardcore nightmare merchants Dazzling Killmen, cryptic art-punk psychos Colossamite, and the skewed yet surprisingly tuneful Sicbay. Now, more than two decades on from Sakes’ recording debut, comes the part where we inform you that the guitarist/shrieker has “matured” and is prepping his first singer-songwriter record or somesuch. Except that’s entirely false—Sakes’ latest band Xaddax, a duo with drummer Chrissy Rossettie, is as challenging and gloriously cathartic as anything he’s done to date.
Counterclockwork, the debut Xaddax release, is a must-hear for any Nick Sakes fan, but what’s most impressive about the 25-minute LP is the way it places his trademark livid howl in an entirely new context. Working with a mad-scientist electroacoustic drum set-up—huge toms, no cymbals, various sample-triggering pads, and a foot-controlled synth pedal—Rossettie pounds out lurching math-disco rhythms haloed in scuzzy sci-fi FX. Sakes responds with perversely anthemic riffs and mantra-like shouts, resulting in a kind of hot-wired hardcore, like Devo gone nastily dystopic.

Playing first with heavy metal outfit Intethod and later with Asheville sleaze masters the Crank County Daredevils, Rory Kelly developed a keen ear and playing ability to match, for what would develop into an ever-widening spectrum of rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities. After the dissolution of Crank County, Rory recruited his former musical partner and father Mike Kelly (Old Bridge Militia) to form two-thirds of what would ultimately become their current band. Together, they recorded what critics deemed a “swamp rock” sound with their first release, Better Than The Blues. The new record, revealing a band edging toward a harder sound, will be released on May 8, with tours planned for early 2012.

Although Norwegian band Wilfred would seem perfectly at home in New York, LA, or Seattle, their classic rock sound has a decidedly global ring. The trio’s name, culled from the main character of Johann Borgens’ novel Lillelord, may well be the only obvious reference to their roots. Although their musical influences include classic Americana, Southern rock, bluegrass, and stadium rock, the band’s output offers a truly individual approach free from any kind of nostalgic tendencies. Thanks to a refined combination of monolithic guitar rock and vivid songwriter pop, the trio’s debut album instantly turns them into an act to watch.

Wolfgang Schalk is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work has received prominent recognition in the US and Europe from journalists, peers, and fans alike. He has recorded six albums as a leader, and has worked with an impressive lineup of notable musicians including 11-time Grammy Award winner Michael Brecker. Recalling the sounds of esteemed fret-board masters Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, and George Benson, Schalk expands on the tradition as one of today’s authentic jazz guitarists.
Schalk’s new release Word of Ear showcases his talent as one of the best young jazz guitarists on the scene. Following his acclaimed Wanted (Frame Up Music, 2008), the bi-coastal guitarist presents new music with an exciting band including the tremendous rhythm section of drummer Tom Brechtlein and bassist Michael Valerio, with outstanding contributions from award-winning pianist helen Sung and multi-keyboardist George Whitty. Whether bringing a fresh re-imagining to Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” or providing fireworks in the original “Blues ‘n Roll,” Schalk’s Word of Ear celebrates one of today’s most gifted guitarists.
“A powerful force … Schalk’s single-note lines, on both electric and acoustic guitar, evoke the pinpoint precision style of Pat Martino with the acumen of Pat Metheny.” — ALL ABOUT JAZZ
“A first-rate composer.” — JAZZREVIEW
“Impressive spidery chops.” — CADENCE

selling Points• Reissue of this monster rarity, originally custom pressed in 1980.• Likely Brazil’s rarest album!• Exact reproduction of original artwork.• Pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.
Originally custom pressed in 1980, Rosa de Sangue is the closing chapter of the amazing Recife psychedelic movement that centered on the work of Lula Côrtes, beginning in 1973 with the release of Satwa. Along with his power trio backing, he was assisted by many old friends including, among many others, Alçeu Valença, Flaviola, Zé de Flute, and Paulo Rafael. The sound veers from crazed ethno folk-rock and magical jungle-folk psych zones to coke-dusted fuzz rock and insane mutant disco. While the album was being recorded & pressed, Lula signed the major label contract that would produce 1981’s far tamer O Gosto Novo da Vida LP. When his new label got wind of Rosa de Sangue’s imminent release, they were displeased to say the least. As soon as the pressing was complete, the entire edition was seized and destroyed, making this album by far Brazil’s rarest … so rare, in fact, that even among the most hardcore Brazilian collectors the original LP is often only “rumored” to exist!

Written, recorded, and released just as Brazil’s military dictatorship reached the climax of its long black arc, the Satwa album is a divinely subtle protest, often cited as Brazil’s first independent record. Formed after the return of Lula Côrtes and Lailson from their respective foreign excursions, the ‘Satwa’ project lasted only a year, perhaps due to their differing stripes. The music is a succession of ragas and mantras powered by incense, magic mushrooms, and other “mental muscle expanders,” recorded live at the Rozenblit Studios, Recife, January 20–31, 1973. Fabricas de Discos Rozenblit was founded by José Rozenblit in 1954 in Pernambuco (northeast Brazil). In addition to a record label, the operation boasted the first-ever vinyl pressing plant in the state, a super-modern factory, and a studio capable of recording a full symphonic orchestra. By working closely with the Rozenblit archives and collectors in Brazil, Mr Bongo aims to re-master archive tapes and reproduce vinyl pressings to their original specifications or better.

selling Points• Fully reproduced original art, featuring beautiful drawings by Lula
Côrtes and layout by Katia Mesel. • Features the fabulous trio of Lula Côrtes, Marconi Notaro, and Ramalho.
Another incredibly original album from the Solar/Rozenblit catalog, this CD features the fabulous trio of Lula Côrtes, Marconi Notaro, and Ramalho. Soon after recording the classic album Satwa, Lula was back in the same Recife studio with his friend, cult poet and writer Notaro, to lay down another equally magical album. This is a poet’s vision in mellow song, mixed with Tropicalia tinged-folk and bossa nova rhythms uplifted by joyful experimentations with electric sounds and trance-inducing effects. Tribal percussion complements the ragas, created by the beautiful sitar-like instrument tricórdio, made by Lula himself. Sadly Marconi passed away in 2000, having lived a life of obscurity even in his own town, yet left behind seven published books of poetry and this stunning album that still sounds completely fresh today.

at Deathstar Studios in Los Angeles. He currently plays with Julian Casablancas, Vicky Cryer, and Beat Club.
This soundtrack to the documentary Rio Breaks features Deize Tigrona, a funk carioca singer from Rio whose song “Injeção” was used as the basis for the M.I.A. song “Bucky Done Gun.” The record also features Nego Moçambique, who DJ hell raved about in O Globo, saying he “sounds like a mixture between Kraftwerk and Green Velvet with a Brazilian touch.” In his propulsive, minimal tracks, Moçambique samples everything from Gilberto Gil to Barrington Levy and Prince. Another key artist here is Juca Chaves, a famous Brazilian comedian. He recorded the classic samba rock tune “Take Me Back to Piaui,” which Mr Bongo rediscovered and has been used on Brazilian Beats 4, Adidas adverts, and numerous US TV shows.

First, the pertinent background: Veteran Bay Area indie-scene singer-songwriters Susie Ulrey (Pohgoh, The Maccabees (US)) and Michael Waksman (The Washdown, Zillionaire) have turned a longtime casual collaboration into a gorgeous collection of compelling, thoughtful, and artfully composed tunes that balance wistful maturity with a certain earnest and eternally young expression. Not quite pop, not quite anything else, these songs feature an amazingly comfortable balance between the two singers’ influences, sounds, and styles.
Now, some comparisons are in order. REC Center sounds like Rilo Kiley laying shoulder to shoulder with The Weakerthans in a field of high Wilco as a gentle breeze made of the best ’70s AM Gold heralds autumn’s arrival. Or something. (But, you know, not really.)
“A unique auditory experience.” — CREATIVE LOAFING
“Light acoustic pop with warm keyboards and vocals.” — TAMPA BAY TIMES
“Rec Center isn’t about rocking the house or shaking you to your core. They’re just about creating a sound unlike any other indie band and keeping the momentum going. If you’re in the mood to slow things down a bit, Rec Center is highly recommended.” — INDIEBALL

Pauline Oliveros—composer, performer, and humanitarian—is an important pioneer in American Music. Internationally acclaimed, for four decades she has explored sound, forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching, and meditation she has created a body of work with such breadth of vision that it profoundly affects those who experience it, and eludes many who try to write about it. Whether performing at the JFK Center in Washington DC, in an underground cavern, or in the studios of West German Radio, Oliveros’ commitment to interaction with the moment is unchanged.
Oliveros has built a loyal following through her concerts, recordings, publications, and musical compositions. She has provided leadership within the music community, from her early years as the first Director of the Center for Contemporary Music (formerly the Tape Music Center at Mills) and director of the Center for Music Experiment during her 14-year tenure as professor of music at UC San Diego to acting in an advisory capacity for organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council for the Arts, and many private foundations. She now serves as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College.
“The distinction between listening and mere passive hearing has been a focus of the 75-year-old composer Pauline Oliveros for decades.” — NEW YORK TIMES
“Accomplished experimental compositions, important to understand the woman’s evolution as an artist.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE

“THYX” was a song written by mind.in.a.box mastermind Stefan Poiss about 15 years ago. For him, the name is synonymous with a specific kind of soundscape. Poiss had discovered something back then: a rift in time, a sound between notes, a coincidental anomaly in sound that he now tries to recreate. The music of ThYX is the product of the search for this phenomenon. Without compromise, he tries to find again what he once had discovered: the wave between sound and resonance.
“The side project ThYX, founded by Stefan Poiss in January this year, stays very electronic but gives the sound a more experimental touch without losing the catchy tunes and atmosphere.” — GRAVE CONCERNS

In 1994, Eric Powell had many promises to keep after the previous year’s release of Wisdom placed 16volt on the map of the industrial underground. Wrought with mechanical rhythms and synthesized atmospheres topped off by caustic guitars and Powell’s acerbic voice, Wisdom was among the surge of industrialized rock albums of the time, ushering in what has now come to be known as coldwave. With that album’s “Motorskill” making waves on the dance floor, influenced in equal parts by Ministry and Skinny Puppy, it was the release of 1994’s Skin on Re-constriction Records that would truly set the tone for 16volt’s future. Now remastered and re-released by Metropolis Records, Skin is made available once again to the masses!
Right from the onset of the opening title track, Skin is immediately a much more hard-hitting and straightforward affair than Wisdom. A stark atmosphere and slow tempo underscores Powell’s vocal venom, seething with unrestrained aggression as a pummeling assault of organic drums and growling guitars dominates the chorus.
Skin was no sophomore slump for 16volt. On the contrary, after 18 years it is just as freshly vitriolic and caustically aggressive as it was in 1994; a milestone for the industrial rock scene. In short, Metropolis Records’ release of Skin is a welcome addition to the 16volt discography and a reminder to the industrial underground of what coldwave is meant to sound like.
“One of the top industrial rock bands in the scene.” — COMA MUSIC
