INTRODUCTION
To outsiders, it might seem like a strange phenomenon, but Samoyed owners are,
without question, a “breed” of their own. What do I mean by that? Well, it so happens
that many potential owners have enormous difficulty choosing a name for a new
Samoyed fur baby.
If you are going through that experience right now, or if you have done it in the past, you
will know all about those heart-burning and brain-numbing processes that go into
making a final decision.
Sometimes, I think it is worse than choosing a name for a new baby, because after all,
you know that the new baby is a “human” and often, new parents have the name
selection done well in advance. Occasionally, parents wait to be sure that their newborn
“looks” like a “Rebecca” or an “Emily”, or a “Michael” or “Robert”, but most times, they
have a simple choice worked out.
Why is it so hard for Sammy lovers to decide? I think it is because while they are
technically getting a “dog”, for them, it is much more than that. It will be a member of
their family and by the time it arrives, it is no longer a newborn, so it has a very obvious
size and shape – perhaps it is small and fine-boned with a delicate face, or a solid little
bear, but most importantly, by the time of the arrival, it will have a very distinct
appearance and personality.
There is no point choosing a “bear” name, only to find that the beautiful fur ball you get
is a delicate little princess. Even if you have had the good fortune to see the fluffy up
close on a few occasions, he or she may well change in the time prior to actual
collection or delivery.
Because of our location, each of our baby Sammies has been shipped to us. While the
first one had a beautiful, sweet, peaceful personality, the delivery of the second one
sure sent shock waves through the household. She was dynamite!
We had taken ages to decide on a name, and I had told the family that I wouldn’t get a
new fur baby until I had a name selected. I had contemplated “Mishka”, meaning “Bear”
in Russian, but had finally decided on a name that I created – “Saminka”, with the “Sam”
from Samoyed, obviously, and “Minka”, which we had been told at the time meant
“perfect and beautiful” in Russian.
As is the case with many names, there are different opinions as to their origin and
meaning, and it transpires that Minka is predominantly a Polish name meaning “strong-
willed”.
In the end, the created name worked fine. Strangely enough, Minka or Minky, as she
was mostly called, had an amazingly strong-willed personality coupled with a high
doggy IQ, and she had a huge impact on our family during her lifetime. (More about her
personality and adventures is included in my book, “The Ultimate Guide to Owning a
Samoyed”, available at www.thesamoyeddog.com.)
We had virtually settled on the name, “Mishka”, for our next furry family member, but
when she arrived, as I explained above, she looked exactly like a delicate little princess,
with a fine structure and a pretty little face.
She was nothing like a bear in anyone’s opinion, with the result that she was called
“Annabella”, with the knowledge that “Bella” means “beautiful” in Italian, and her Daddy
was Italian.
So, the naming process went on in our household, but I became aware that it is a big
decision for many Sammy owners, not just us. Keep in mind here that to all of us, our
furry family member is not really just a “dog”, so the usual dog names or even tongue-
in-cheek, amusing names are rarely, if ever, used. Has anyone seen a Samoyed called
“Rover” or “Deefer”? Probably not.
What makes choosing a Samoyed’s name even more tricky, is that while owners will
often use a human name, there are quite a few who want to select a name that has an
association with their origins, their beautiful, majestic appearance or their distinct
personality.
Our fourth Samoyed was named “Velvet” because of her stunning coat and you will find
many owners out there with Sammies that have unusual or unique names, often
associated with the Arctic region from which they originate.
What I have endeavoured to create for you here is a massive range of names, both
human and Samoyed-specific, which you can peruse at your leisure, knowing that when
that fur baby finally arrives, whether you are a first time Sammy Mama or Dad, or
getting another fur baby, you will have exactly the “right” name for him or her.
I have made a huge effort to source a large range of Russian and Northern European names for you because so many Sammy owners like the idea of using a name with those origins. As I said earlier, there are often differences of opinion regarding the origin, meaning and
spelling of names. This is often because they originated in some cases centuries ago in
ancient languages which have been modified substantially as they have passed through
different racial groups. If you discover a name, meaning or origin which you feel is
completely incorrect, please contact me so that future editions can be amended.
I hope you enjoy reading through the names as much as I have loved collecting them
and compiling them for you.
Sharing Sammy love always
