Concept Development started with the idea of group and individual zones with a large visual dome in the center. The idea was further refined from a symmetrical and static configuration to one that was dynamic.

Sylar Hotel is a research resort - a new hotel typology combining science (SY), resort life (L) and art (AR). Sylar is located in the former Revel Casino Hotel, which boasts over 4 million square feet. The challenge was to re-design and re-conceptualize the failing casino model in Atlantic City and explore new innovations in hospitality.

Launch Pad is the Sylar Hotel’s main entry and mezzanine lobby. Form studies were conducted to explore the role of this space. The Launch Pad was designed to be a central hub for the hotel. Specific zones create distinct experiences for hotel guests and the public. Multiple programs were conceived in each space for future variability and changes in the overall hotel programming.

A Grand Entry merges the beach front entry with the hotel. The staircase performs as both a stage and display for the current research activities.

Nano Screens greet visitors on the mezzanine lobby and is the interface with the hotel’s information systems.

Pop-Up Installation Space is a venue to feature the latest in research and entertainment. The current installation is called the “Cloak Room”, a lounge and dating service. Every 30 minutes a DNA mist is emitted which deposits plant-based DNA on visitors. The DNA markers are then interfaced with a social network for patrons to anonymously meet strangers.

Under the Bleachers is a work live space. The project was designed for a young graphic designer living in Manhattan. She works at the prestigious global design consultancy firm 2 x 4, on the Prada account. She needs a space for both entertaining and for retreating from everyday stresses. The box shaped loft has a footprint of 900 sq.ft. with the option to build multiple levels. This project explores the segregation of public and private space in a home, including the utilization of custom wallcovering featuring work by 2 x 4.

The term “Under the Bleachers” is imbued with cultural meaning of American high school football stars and cheerleaders. In post-war America, students would find places like the bleachers at the football field to engage in risqué activities in secret.

Above the Bleachers is an open space that overlooks the entrance and foyer below. This elevated height sets a stage for entertainment and socialization - a public performance. A staircase wraps around the peripheral of the bleachers for a transitional space before one enters the hypersocial area. The frosted glass walls of the staircase peek into the underbelly of the bleachers.

Page 27: NATALIE FU
Page 28: NATALIE FU

Under the Bleachers we find the negative space of the bleachers. This condition creates a large space for a personal retreat. The open space fosters a journey for rest and relaxation. Also, the frosted glass that surrounds the space creates a sense of intrigue and privacy.

Page 29: NATALIE FU
Page 30: NATALIE FU

A Gradient System ties this work/live space cohesively. The custom wallpaper features a light to dark gradient from the floor to ceiling and unites both above and under the bleachers. This system is interrupted by a 20’ tall work chamber which has the opposite condition in the interior - dark to light gradient from floor to ceiling. This juxtapositiong serves to delinate the work tower from the rest of the space. The pure white interior of the work tower fosters creativity for this graphic designer.

“A corned-beef sandwich would be sensational, or one of those big, fat frankfurters, you know, with the

mustard. But I don’t eat any of that stuff. I haven’t had a frankfurter in, I would say, forty-five years. I don’t eat enjoyable foods.

I eat for my HEALTH.”

Untitled 2014 is a light installation for the IESNYC 2014 Student Design Competition. The theme of the competition was a Tactile Experience. Untitled is a visual experience created with angora yarn and fluorescent black light. It explores the juxtaposition of touch both visually and psychologically. This experience is achieved through the following language of contrasts: The coolness of the black fluorescent lights against the warmth of the yarn. The tension of the taut yarn against the relaxed gathering of yarn at the bottom.

Reflections is a brass pendant 6”x 11” light fixture exploring the motion of reflections through angles of refraction. The lamp is constructed from a 3” diameter brass tube and a gold foil lined bowl.

Subterranean Flower Power is a wallcovering that plays on the optical illusion of flowers falling into the oblivion. This effect is achieved by exploring depth and gradient. The result is an experiential moment through graphic design. This custom wallcovering was designed for a young graphic designer who works at 2 x 4 on the Prada Account.

Foliage Bricks is a wallcovering collection that contemplates the dichotomy between the organic and the technological. Calligriphic flowers show the influence of an artist’s hand in the midst of a computerized design process. Two wallcovering designs work together as building blocks that can be installed to create customized installations.
