National General Assembly 2018
During Council’s recent attendance at the Australian National General Assembly in Canberra, Councillor Purtill Deputy Mayor, Councillor O’Halloran and the General Manager Michael Kitzelmann, met with several Federal Members and Ministers representing our community and the opportunities that are occurring. The highlight of the event was a private function at Parliament House with our Federal Member Susan Ley and The Hon. Keith Pitt MP, Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister.
Pictured at right, Opposition leader the Hon. Bill Shorten briefly discussing opportunities within the Balranald Shire Council area with Councillor Purtill. Councillor Purtill formerly invited Mr Shorten and his Shadow Cabinet to visit our growing area, providing a very brief overview of the extensive development that has been proposed or is under progress in our local community.

Stronger Country Communities Fund: Balranald Market Streetscape Revitalisation Project Update
The community reference group managed to identify a number of opportunities and focus areas at a workshop in May. These focus areas will guide the urban designer in her concept design.
A next step would be for the draft concept design to be reviewed by the community reference group at a second workshop early in July. Project representatives will be setting up an information stall at the Senior Citizen’s Centre as a listening post to engage with the Balranald community to discuss the concept design and to get feedback, the morning after the workshop. Please see attached flyer for further details. Everybody is encouraged to stop by and have a look at what ideas are being considered.
Construction and sealing of approximately two kilometres of the Balranald-Ivanhoe Road from the edge of the seal (approximately 166km north of Balranald) has begun in earnest this month. The Mildura-Ivanhoe / Clare-Mossgiel intersection has also been realigned to bring it up to Austroad Standards for road safety. Road users looking to pass through this construction works are asked to follow signs, show caution and drive to conditions. It is anticipated that this construct and seal project will be completed by the end of July (subject to weather conditions).

Next Ordinary Meeting of Council
The next meeting will be on:
-Tuesday 17th July 2018-
As the financial year turns over it is a busy time for
Council. I would like to extend my thanks to Council
staff for preparing the Operational Plan for the
2018/2019 financial year which was adopted at the
June Council meeting and includes a budget that will
produce a modest surplus. An excellent outcome
and credit to the hard work of all involved.
Looking ahead it gives me great pleasure to advise
that a display case is going to be placed in Council’s
foyer to house memorabilia of former Shire Clerk,
Norma Male BEM, kindly donated by her family.
Council Chambers was dedicated in honour of
Ms Male in recognition of her 30 years service as
Clerk to the Shire and her achievement of becoming
the first female Shire Clerk in NSW. It is a privilege
to receive this memorabilia and I extend my thanks
to Ms Male’s family for their generosity to our Shire.

Hostel Mock Wedding
In celebration of the Royal’s big event, Bidgee Haven held a Royal Wedding of it’s own last month. Hostel Manager Genevieve McConnell officiated and staff and residents all had a role to play in the grand occasion. Kaitley Linnett and Toni Tyrer played the roles of Prince Harry and Megan Markle, respectively. The “royals” greeted the residents as their distinguished guests in the roles Dukes and Duchesses. It was a grand celebration, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Pictured below, Barry “Prince Phillip” presents the bride, Duchess Agnes presents a gift to the royal couple, the married couple take to the floor for the first dance, Duchess Joan presents flowers to the bride, residents and staff enjoying the wedding.
