Procedure for Nature
• We’re going to read from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Nature” on 161.
• While we’re reading, have out a piece of paper or your device to take notes on.
• Write down at least 3 quotes from the essay that you find important.
![Page 8: “Nature” & “Self-Reliance”](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062305/568163a6550346895dd4afff/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Procedure Cont’d.
• We’re going to write down some of the quotes from the essay and pick out our top 5.
• In groups of 3-4 (or less), look at these 5 quotes and figure out what they mean and why these quotes are important (to understanding Transcendentalism).
• Turn these in by the end of the hour

Self-Reliance– Read “Self-Reliance” on page 163.– What are the themes of “Self-Reliance” and “Nature?”
How is it developed by Emerson? Write a couple of paragraphs that discuss what the themes are, how they are developed (pointing to specific lines in the text. I want to see QUOTATIONS!), and how that fits in with the Transcendentalist Movement.
• Include: an introductory paragraph• At least two body paragraphs• A concluding paragraph
