Neuropsychologists in
Alabama
2015 Directory
1
Introduction
This statewide list of neuropsychologists has been compiled from information provided by the
neuropsychologists listed in this directory. It is our hope that it will be helpful and informative,
facilitating access to their professional expertise and services.
Alabama Head Injury Foundation (AHIF) does not endorse any of these practitioners. This
Directory was generated solely as a resource for people with traumatic brain injury. There
were no established criteria for the individuals listed within this directory other than that he/she
provides neuropsychological services.
What is a Neuropsychologist?
A neuropsychologist is a psychologist with specialized training in brain behavior relationships.
What is a board certified Neuropsychologist?
Any neuropsychologist can apply to the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology, ABCN,
and/or the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology, ABPN, to become board
certified. Board certification assures the public and profession that the specialist in clinical
neuropsychology has met the education, training, and experience requirements, as well as
demonstrating the advanced competencies required by the specialty through an individualized
peer reviewed examination. The lack of Board Certification, however, does not necessarily
mean the neuropsychologist is unqualified.
What do Neuropsychologists do?
Neuropsychologists have many different types of jobs and not every neuropsychologist does
the same thing. Many neuropsychologists adminsterpsychological tests and perform an
assessments to diagnose specific disorders of the brain. These brain disorders often results in
problem with thinking, emotion and/or behavior. Neuropsychologists study ways to measure
recovery from brain damage as well as developing strategies for interventions that are effective
in remediation, retraining and accommodation.
Some neuropsychologists also provide psychotherapy. Neuropsychologists may teach, and
some conduct research in college and universities to better understand the functioning of the
brain. Neuropsychologists who work in the court system are known as forensic
neuropsychologists, and choose to use their knowledge to help in legal issues.
