Gay leaders blame TV ads,Obama for loss in Maine
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Stunned and angry, national gayrights leaders Wednesday blamedscare-mongering ads - and President Barack Obama's lack of engagement - for a bitter electionsetback in Maine that could alterthe dynamics for both sides in thegay-marriage debate.
Conservatives, in contrast, celebrated Maine voters' rejection ofa law that would have allowedgay couples to wed, depicting itas a warning shot that should deter politicians in other states frompushing for same-sex marriage.
"Every time the citizens havevoted on marriage, they have always sidedwithnatural marriage,"said Mathew Staver, founder ofLiberty Counsel, a Florida-basedChristian legal group. "Mainedramatically illustrates the will ofthe people, and politicians shouldwake up and listen."
Gay activists were frustrated that Obama, who insists hestaunchly supports their overallcivil rights agenda, didn't speakout forcefully in defense of Maine'smarriage law before Tuesday'S referendum. The law was repealed ina vote of 53 percent to 47 percent.
"President Obama missed anopportunity to state his positionagainst these discriminatory attacks with the clarity and moralimperative that would have helpedin this close fight," said Evan Wolfson of the national advocacy groupFreedom to Marry. "The anti-gayforces are throwing millions ofdollars into various unsubtle adsaimed at scaring people, so subtlestatements from the White Houseare not enough."
The White House, asked aboutthe criticism, had no immediatecomment.
The marriage debate is simmering in at least a half-dozen stateswhere a same-sex marriage bill ispending or where a court ruling orexisting law is being eyed by conservatives for possible challenge.
