We all have heard of the electronics of a hear-ing aid; the processors, chips, receivers and the microphones. But how many have heard about the heart of a hearing aid? I believe the heart of a hearing aid starts beating the moment a patient says “Yes, I need to do something about my hear-ing.” It beats stronger when they call your office and schedule a hearing evaluation. Once every-thing is ordered and the day of the fitting arrives the heart is beating very strong. The first time the patient hears their spouse and is able to join in family conversations the heart beat continues.
But what happens when the heartbeat grows weaker and the hearing aids need to be replaced with new technology. A new heartbeat starts but what happens to the old aids. Some are put away in case they’re needed as loaners in the future, which is a good idea. Some will be thrown away, which results in a heart that will
never beat again. If you look around you will find someone
who has a use for those old aids. You or one of your peers may have the opportunity to go on a mission trip. This can be a trip to another country or to an area hard hit by our economy. These aids can let someone hear that heartbeat for the first time. There is not a better feeling than to be a part of that experience.
I urge you to either become involved in a mission project or to sup-port a mission project with your old aids. Keep those heartbeats going around the world.

From the Executive Director…
As you know, addressing internet and over-the-coun-ter hearing aid sales has been a priority for IHS this year. The October announce-ment by UnitedHealthcare, through its subsidiary hi HealthInnovations, that it would be testing hearing online and selling hearing aids direct to con-sumers over the Internet has pushed our efforts into high-gear. Your IHS leaders and staff have been spending countless hours researching this issue, developing and implementing plans of action, and responding to member inquiries. I can say I am overwhelmed by the support we have received in response to our actions.
Some of the key action steps IHS has taken to date include but are not limited to:
• October 10, 2011: IHS con-tacted the FDA to raise concerns about Best Buy selling hearing aids over the Internet, marketed as sound amplifi-ers. Best Buy then added disclaimers on their product pages to clarify that the products were sound amplifiers and not hearing aids. As of the week of October 31st, Best Buy removed all Focus Ear products from the Internet.
• October 27, 2011: IHS sent a letter to United Healthcare subsidiary hi HealthInnovations directing it to cease and desist what we assert are illegal practices based on federal and
state law.• N o v e m b e r
1, 2011: IHS initiat-ed and led a confer-ence call of the allied organizations, AAA, ADA, AAO-HNS, and ASHA, to bring each other up to speed on what we each know, and agree to keep the
lines of communication open. At IHS’ request, the allied groups agreed to the development of a joint statement to members that highlight our commit-ment to working together.
• November 9, 2011: IHS sent an email communication to chapter leaders which included key informa-tion and various tools to assist them in creating a strategic plan at the state level. Now is the time for our profes-sion to band together and present a unified front in order to reach a uni-fied goal.
• IHS has placed full page ads in Advance for Hearing Practice Management, The Hearing Review and The Hearing Journal declar-ing our dedication to preventing sales direct to consumers.
• December 21, 2011: IHS sent an email update to all members with information on the most recent activ-ity surrounding the issue and also launched a dedicated web page on the IHS web site to keep members informed.
• January 2012: HIA requests a formal meeting with the FDA and IHS

prepares to support HIA with back up material and support for the meeting.
It is IMPERATIVE that IHS be dili-gent in its efforts particularly since we are the ONLY group coming to the table representing Hearing Aid Specialists. It is clear from the multi-ple meetings we’ve attended, just how easy it is for the pen of the decision maker to leave out the professional job title “Hearing Aid Specialist” when referring to hearing healthcare professionals and it is our job to make it is not overseen any further. In all of our discussions it is evident to me that we need to increase our membership to make sure decision makers, such as legislators, insurance companies, allied organizations, and manufactur-ers listen to us. If you are an IHS member reading this message then please pass it along to a peer and encourage them to join! If you are reading this and are not an IHS mem-ber – yet you enjoy and benefit from your profession – than I urge you to join IHS today.
We are the only society working to secure your future AND WE NEED YOU!
Sincerely,Kathleen Mennillo, MBA

As in most other states, hearing aid dealers and fitters in Ohio have been struggling with the issue of patients buying their hearing aids directly from the Internet. The Hearing Healthcare Alliance of Ohio is dedicated to work-ing towards a solution to this prob-lem. The sale of hearing aids over the internet has two very drastic negative consequences. It erodes patient care and it hurts small businesses in Ohio. Hearing instruments are a critical piece of medical equipment to the hearing impaired and Ohio licensees have a responsibility to provide their patients with the most responsible and highest quality care.
Other states, such as Florida, Missouri, and several other, have been successful in getting laws enacted intended to help stop this problem. Ohio is anxious to join them!
Ohio would like to require that only appropriately license professionals can recommend and fit a hearing aid. To be licensed in Ohio, hearing aid deal-ers are required to pass an examina-tion for licensure, they must complete continuing education, and they must adhere to ethical standards set by the licensure boards. Out-of-state internet companies are not held to this same high standard. If an internet based company practices unethically, they may not be disciplined by the state of Ohio, since they are not licensed in the state.
The Hearing Aid Dealers and Fitters Board teamed up with the Ohio Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology to conduct a survey of licensee throughout Ohio. 353 indi-viduals responded to the survey: 267 audiologist, 72 hearing instrument spe-
cialists, and 14 dual licensees. 90.5% of responders indicated that prohibiting the direct sale of hearing aids over the internet would have a positive impact on their business. 58.5% said they have experienced a patient who received an inappropriate hearing aid after a direct purchase over the internet. These results will be helpful in proving our case to the Ohio Legislature.
Interested parties have completed a draft piece of legislation. We continue to work to identify the most appro-priate bill sponsor to champion the measure and get the bill introduced. Once introduced, Ohio licensees will be called to action to reach out to their individual Representative to ask for their support. This will be a team effort and an opportunity for licensed hearing aid dealers for fight on behalf of their patients.
