The Niagara Parks Commission is an agency of the Government of Ontario that has operated without tax payer support since 1885.
Every dollar you spend with us helps preserve
the nature and heritage of the Falls and the Niagara River corridor.
Thank you very much for only printing sections of this e-brochure when absolutely necessary. Niagara Parks is proud of our environmental commitment to programs of stewardship and leadership, all based on Conservation, Education, Environmental Management and Innovation, Preservation and Restoration.

In the decades prior to the 1880s, the area next to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls became over-run with uncontrolled and unsightly commercial development. Visitors were unable to enjoy the beauty of the Falls.
Concern over blatant commercialism led to the Ontario Government stepping
in and assuming ownership of the lands in and about Niagara Falls. In 1885, The
Niagara Parks Commission was formed by an Act of the Provincial Government,
which outlined its powers and duties and defined its mandate to manage,
control and develop the Parks. A lovely 62.2 hectare (154 acre) park, named for
Queen Victoria, was then developed and officially opened on May 24, 1888.
In the years since, more and more land has been acquired so that now the
Ontario Niagara Parks system covers 1,720 hectares (4,250 acres) extending
along the entire length of the Niagara River. The properties include features
such as Falls attractions, golf courses, heritage sites, a horticultural school,
restaurants, and a butterfly conservatory. From its inception, The Niagara Parks
Commission has been a completely self-funding agency, operating at no cost to
the Ontario taxpayer.
Environmental Stewardship
NPC has established an enviable record in terms of environmental stewardship.
It is based on its own Environmental Mission Statement – “to improve
environmental quality and sustainable development throughout our vast parks
system for the benefit of visitors, employees and our associates.”

The Niagara Parks Commission has a mission to: Preserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Falls
and the Niagara River corridor for the enjoyment of
visitors, while maintaining financial self-sufficiency.
Niagara Parks is similar to a private corporation, with

the Niagara Parks Act.
Niagara Parks uses the revenue raised through its
commercial operations in part to provide numerous
FREE activities and facilities for the enjoyment of
visitors, as well as to support significant stewardship
and preservation initiatives.

Quite simply, Responsible Tourism is something The Niagara Parks Commission
practices every day. As part of our overall mission, we are tasked with the
responsibility of preserving and enhancing the beauty of the Falls and the
Niagara River Corridor and we have done so proudly for over 120 years.
It is also about sharing our experiences with others; educating the public on
what we do and partnering with other world-renowned cultural and tourism
destinations to promote the benefits of tourism and how it has allowed us to
preserve and enhance these great treasures for future generations.
Tourism and preservation need not be mutually exclusive concepts. In our case,
one has allowed the other to take place. People need to be educated to this
fact. In fact, NPC has met with several other tourism and government organizations
to explain our operations and promote our version of responsible tourism.
For example, in 2004, the Commission met with political and environmental
officials from the government of Thailand to explain NPC’s operation and
commitment to the environment. In 2005, NPC signed formal partnership
agreements with both the Great Wall Administration and the Huangguoshu
Waterfall Administration of China. NPC met with representatives of the Shizuoka
Prefectural Assembly, who have control over Mount Fuji, to explain NPC’s efforts
to preserve the lands around Niagara for all to enjoy.
