“The Guild With Heart”
The next meeting will be on Monday,
February 12, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. at Messiah Lutheran
Church (in the gym) in Mauldin, South Carolina.
From the President:
Can’t believe that it is already February! I hope to see
many of you at the Gathering of Quilters in Williamston on
February 4th.
One of my goals this year for our guild is to concentrate on building our membership. We have such a wonderful group of ladies and the talent contained in our guild is simply amazing. So why should we keep all of this talent to ourselves? Let all concentrate on inviting visitors to our meetings, make a conscious effort to speak to all of our visitors and invite them to join our guild. Offer rides to anyone that you know does not attend anymore due to vision problems or not wanting to drive at night. So many times these members will not mention it to anyone but would gladly accept a ride with a friend to the meeting.
Our vice president has a wonderful year planned of speakers and workshops this year so I hope that we can all take advantage of the opportunities to learn new techniques or just refresh on techniques that we haven’t used in a long time.
Looking forward to seeing you all for our first meeting of the year. Don’t forget to bring show and share!
Happy Quilting,
Shelia

From the Vice-President
In February, our speaker will be Donna Royson. She is a
certified Quilt in a Day Teacher and will be presenting a
lovely trunk show. Unfortunately, we have had to
reschedule the workshop originally planned for Tuesday
the 14th. Donna has agreed to return to our guild later this
year to give the workshop. She will show the quilt at the
meeting Monday and we will discuss possible times for
the rescheduled date.
In March, our speaker will be Anna Maria Horner. She is
a very well know Janome artist! Anna will be bringing lots
of goodies to sell so come early and tell your friends!
Since Anna is considered a “National” speaker, we will be
asking for a $5 donation at the door for non-members.
In April, Virginia Shrenker, a QSC member will be presenting a wonder Applique lecture and wait until you see her quilts!!
May will be our vendor night – so start saving now!
For June, I have scheduled Diane Knott. She is another
wonderful artist. She is known for her scrap quilts and has
written a lovely book. We have to decide which workshop
we want to take, but I will be bringing options for you to
vote on. Make sure you come to the meeting so you can
see all we have to offer! -----Susan Perham
Opportunity Quilt Partial proceeds from the Opportunity Quilt 2017
ticket sales will be going to Alpha-1 Foundation.
Evelyn Kellogg plans to have the quilt and tickets
available at the January meeting.
December Meeting Minutes December NTQG meeting minutes will be voted on (as
printed in the January newsletter) at the February
meeting. Since the January meeting was cancelled
because of inclement weather, there are no January
meeting minutes.

ROUND ROBIN - PICK A THEME We will sign up for this activity at the February meeting and start passing the boxes in March. For 9-12 participants. If you cannot be at the February meeting and want to participate, contact Mona Turner - [email protected] Supplies: pizza box (supplied) and fabric Guidelines
1. Each participant will pick a theme - whatever they want. Some ideas are dogs, cats, quilting, beach, rainbows, snowmen, lighthouses, sports, birds, etc. 2. Each participant will be given a pizza box at the February meeting. In this box they will place a description of their theme and a 12 1/2" block that represents their theme. They may also place additional fabric to be used in future blocks. They will bring this box to the March meeting. 3. Each of the following months, each participant will make a 12 1/2" block (or equivalent, such as 4-4 1/2" blocks) to correspond to the chosen theme. They will place the finished block in the box. 4. Everyone's name will be on a list. Each month at the guild meeting, the boxes will pass to the next name on the list. And so on, until the boxes have been to everyone on the list. If we have 9 in a group, we can finish by December. If we have 12 in a group, then we will finish next year. If you have any questions, please contact Mona Turner at 963-9411.

Book Review Foolproof Crazy
Quilting By Jennifer Clouston C & T Publishing, 2013 110 pages Price $ 27.95 (new) Once you learn basic embroidery stitches you can embellish crazy patch quilting with those stitches and add beads, buttons, yarn, silk ribbon, etc. The best feature of this book (in my opinion) is the 25 stitch maps for embellishing. The author showcases seven different hexagons that have been pieced with a crazy patch technique. Then the hexagons are embellished using embroidery stitches with perle cotton, yarn, special threads/yarn, and silk ribbon. There are 25 different embellished hexagon blocks shown. The color photograph of the embellished hexagon provides a very clear image of what your project will look like. The “wonderful” part of each photograph is that each stitch is labeled and information about which needle should be used is also included. You can refer to the embroidery section of the book to see how to make each stitch. There are also directions for silk ribbon embroidery stitches, beading, couching, and working with buttons. If you do make hexagons, as she does in the book, there is also information about joining those embellished hexagons to create your quilt. If you like crazy patch and embroidery this is a book that you will “oohh” and “aahh” over all through the book. I have not completed any of the hexagons shown yet. More than likely I will create square blocks to embellish. I am in awe of her ideas for embellishing the patchwork. The embellished hexagons are all beautiful. To choose just one as a favorite would be extremely difficult. By Yvonne Stiefel

Habitat for Humanity Philanthropy
We have another Habitat dedication! The Watley family, mom Jaylan and daughter Alaya, will be presented with their keys on Friday, February 3, at 11:30am. The address is 15 Hope Bridge Way in Greenville. We hope you can attend the dedication.
We also received a wonderful donation of fabric and batting from a local church group. They ceased with their charitable quilting program, and wanted all their supplies put to good use. We will be bringing in some scraps at the next meeting (free if used in a Habitat quilt, or $1 per bag if for your own use – proceeds to be used for HFH backing and batting). We can also bring to guild some totes of donated fabric for your inclusion in a habitat quilt – just let us know the color wave you would like to peruse. Becky 864-561-1811.
We often have guild members who would like to make a Habitat quilt, but want a simple quilt top pattern. If you have a relatively simple quilt pattern that can be shared with the guild for quick Habitat quilts, we would surely like to have them. Bring your pattern to guild, and we can create a pattern library for all guild members’ use. But please be sure we don’t violate any Copyright laws. Becky Schwartz Yvonne Stiefel

Block of the Month for January We will have both the January and February
BOM drawings at the February meeting. For
January, bring any 6”or 12” (finished) block. Each
block you bring entitles you to enter your name
in the drawing for a chance to win all the blocks
brought.
Block of the Month for February
I thought I would keep the BOM simple this year
and showcase the versatility of half square
triangle and flying geese. You can use your
favorite method to make them, or use the
directions that come in the newsletter.
Here is your February block, please use a
Valentine print or color and white/white on
white, have fun!
Cut two 8.5 inch squares of each of the
print/color and white fabric. Draw a line from
one corner to the other, sew ¼” away from the
drawn lines.
Cut the square on the diagonal lines as well as
horizontally and vertically.
Square each half square to 3.5 “. Arrange half
squares like this:
(Forgive me, I haven’t had good success getting
an image to upload. I have taken pictures of the
steps and will send them to Gloria for the
website. I’ve attached the sketches to the

the picture via text. –Ruth 864-905-7370 )
