It is the law
In a hazardous environment, there is noroom for error. Operators, large volumes
of raw materials, very expensive assets,
and even the environment are all at risk.
Local authorities have become very atten-
tive to all aspects of hazard mitigation
and strictly enforce the regulations.
Between March 11, 2008 and June 17,
2009, the US Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) identi-
fied 3 662 violations during inspections
at a wide variety of workplaces randomly
chosen throughout the US. The most
frequently cited violations included:
housekeeping, hazard communication,
personal protective equipment, and elec-
Petrochemical plants and refineries are among the production environments most
exposed to hazards. An accident can have dramatic consequences and care has to
be taken to guarantee safety during all operations. At the same time, plants struggle
to continuously increase production profitability. For this reason, the choice of the right
equipment is of key importance to assure on one hand the required safety while on the
other hand to optimize the process flow and to maximize plant uptime.

trical and general duty clauses. In theUnited States alone, 30 000 factories have
been identified by the OSHA as potentially
at risk of a dust explosion.
Outside the USA as well, local authorities
are also meticulous in enforcing regula-
tions without exceptions. Beyond safety
concerns, an accident has considerable
economic consequences. Thats why most
companies take appropriate measures to
ensure that their facilities meet both local
regulations and company safety policies.
Today, new technologies are available
and affordable which increase safety and
efficiency. One of them is intrinsic safety
technology.

The good old bomb-box: a thing
from the past
Once the Zone or Division has beendefined, there are not many alternatives
available regarding the appropriate tech-
nology to use. Historically, Ex flameproof
die cast enclosures have been used to
protect equipment in Div 1 or Zone 1/21
classified areas.
Intrinsically safe equipment can often
provide a more cost effective alternative
to Ex enclosures. However, in the past,
the range of intrinsically safe solutions
has been limited. For this reason for more
advanced applications the preference was
to enclose the required equipment in the
so called bomb-box.
The Bomb Box solution had the advan-
tage that the same equipment can be
used outside and inside the zone. The sig-nificant disadvantage is however its ser-
viceability. In case of any failure which
requests the intervention of a special-
ist, the bomb-box can be opened only
after the hazard has been temporarily
removed. This means, in other words,
to shut down the process and to purge/
vent the environment. The alternative
would be to remove the whole system, and
service it far away from the Zone. In this
case again the operations shut-down is
required. A bomb-box proves to be very
sub-optimal.

What are the reasons leading to
such an award?
The incredible about this product is thatit brings into the classified Zone1/21 or
Div1 areas exactly the same functional-
ity of the IND560 family of terminals. A
particular highlight is the availability of
solid state active/active I/O that allows for
straightforward control of valves directly
in the Zone 1/21 Div 1, without any addi-
tional PLC and complicated wiring. Read
more about the features of the IND560x
at:
www.mt.com/IND560x
The IND560x is your gateway to uncom-
promised weighing in classified areas!
The other advantage of the Bomb Box
used to be the cost of installation. As the
intrinsic safe systems used to be expen-sive and require complex wiring, the
rather expensive bomb-box solution
appeared competitive. However, intrinsic
safety has become much more affordable
and simple to install. Finally today, a
modern intrinsically safe piece of equip-
ment can provide the same functionality
as for equipment made for safe areas.
"Breakthrough Product of the Year
2010!"
Processing Magazine has voted the
intrinsically safe weighing terminal
IND560x as Breakthrough Product of the

Redu
cedProcessCo
sts
tory analysis of samples or in-line H2S
monitoring. Both techniques are not with-
out their problems. Lab analysis is time
consuming and does not provide real-
time data. The amine sweetening process
is a continuous operation and the acid
gas load of the feedstock can fluctuate
dramatically. Therefore, basing process
control on grab sample analysis can be
ineffective. Although in-line H2S analyz-
ers do provide real-time data, they are
expensive to purchase, install and main-
tain, and do not measure CO2 contentwhich is the other common constituent of
sour gas. But there is a third alternative:
one that is not only cost effective, it is also
highly efficient in-line pH analysis.
Value of pH monitoring
Simply by monitoring the pH upstream
and downstream of the amine stripper,
the acid gas load on the amine solution
can be easily measured. When the acid
gas load is known, the steam feed to
the stripper can be adjusted to the point
where it efficiently removes the acid gases
from the amine solution. Degeneration of
the amine solution is also easily detected,
so fresh make-up amine can be added in
order to guarantee sufficient absorption.
Before making adjustments to the pro-
cess, the exact relationship between the
pH value of the amine solution and the
acid gas loading must be ascertained.
The easiest way of doing this is empiri-
cally. First, the actual acid gas content
of the rich and lean solutions needs to
be measured in the laboratory by analyz-
ing grab samples. Then, by comparing
the acid gas concentrations found in the
laboratory with the process pH values and
temperatures at the time of taking the
samples, the correlation between pH and
acid gas loading can be determined.
The use of a METTLER TOLEDO M700
transmitter can be of great help here.
With its internal flash memory card,
the M700 can log both pH and tempera-
ture values for an extended period. This
makes it easy to look up the process val-ues at the time the samples were taken.
And only one M700 is required for both
pH electrodes.
Cost-effective Amine Sweetening
withIn-linepHAnalysis
Amine sweetening is a common unit process in refineries for the removal of sour gases.
However, it can be a costly procedure that is often inefficient. With real-time, in-line pH
analysis from METTLER TOLEDO you can be sure sweetening is effective and money is not
being wasted.
Controlling amine sweetening
The removal of hydrogen sulfide and
carbon dioxide by amine sweetening
relies on maintaining the quality of the
amine solution fed to the absorber and
proper adjustment of the steam feed to
the amine stripper. Insufficient steam at
the stripper results in incomplete amine
regeneration, while excessive steam rep-
resents a costly waste of energy. Feeding
the absorber with an amine solution that
is not sufficiently lean means gas absor-
bance will not be optimal, and addingfresh amine when it is not required is
simply throwing money away.
Typical methods employed for monitoring
acid gas load in amine units are labora-

Now, based on the upstream, real-time pH
level, adjustments to the steam feed can
be made to ensure the optimum amount
of steam is continually being fed to the
stripper. While a decrease in the pH level
downstream of the stripper indicates that
stripping is not sufficient or that amine in
the solution is spent and that fresh amine
must be added.
Rugged electrodes
For the pH measurement itself, the InPro
4260i electrode is ideal and designed for
extended life in harsh chemical environ-
ments. The InPro 4260i benefits from a
solid electrolyte and an open junctioninstead of a diaphragm so that fouling
of the junction is minimized. Fitting a
retractable housing, such as the InTrac
777, allows any maintenance work to be
conducted without interruption to the
process.
Additional benefits come from the inclu-
sion of Intelligent Sensor Management
(ISM) technology. ISM functionality
includes Plug and Measure for fast, error-
free start-up, and on-board diagnostics
that predict when maintenance will be
required.
Cost savings
An in-line pH measurement solution from
METTLER TOLEDO will not only verify
that your amine sweetening process is
doing its job, it will ensure you are not
wasting steam and energy at the stripper
or misapplying fresh amine.

Concept
The idea behind InTrac retractable hous-
ings is to offer enhanced reliability and
operational safety and increased pro-
cess uptime, plus significantly reduc-
ing measuring point operating costs.
InTrac housings have been designed for
use in demanding applications in the
petrochemical industry where the use of
pH / ORP, DO, conductivity and turbidity
sensors is necessary to control and moni-
tor process conditions.
High safety
Central to the design of InTrac housings
are the Tri-Lock safety features: sensor
detector, safety immersion tube and posi-
tive position locks. All of which have been
designed to avoid unintentional release
of process fluids. The sensor detector
prevents the housing from being inserted
without a sensor being installed. The
patented immersion tube seals the hous-
ing from the process at all times during
operation, and the positive position locks
always keep the sensor in an optimal
measuring position. Complete separa-
tion of the sealing and bearing functions
improves operation and reliability even in
highly contaminating applications.
In combination with an EasyClean clean-
ing and calibration system, a fully auto-
mated measuring system is available,
bringing about a substantial reduction inoperating costs.
Compliance
The InTrac housings are fully compliant
with ATEX guideline 94 / 9 / EC and are
suitable for installation in Zone 0 and 1
hazardous areas. A wide selection of pro-
cess fittings enables unrivalled flexibility
for any installation purpose.
New length
The InTrac 777 line is now available with
an extended insertion length of 295 mm
to cover more applications.

Powders'Handling
Reliable real-time inventory control
This customer has then decided to turn his hoppers into scales,
taking advantage of high precision and reliable weighing
modules and many advanced functions of METTLER TOLEDO
weighing terminals.
The ultimate challenge
The ultimate challenge when handling powders is to dispense
them into bags or drums and achieve a regular and accurate
level of filling while maintaining a high production rate. Nor-
mal filling systems fail to reach a constant filling target leading
to a lot of manual rework. Automatic monitoring of feed and
spill* usually provides good results for liquids but with powders
it is less accurate. This is because it is a lot more difficult todispense powders at a constant and stable flow. This leads to
unstable feed rates and very unpredictable spills.
The challenge: reliable inventory control, safe and accurate filling of bags or drums, fast and efficient
operation. A customer brings it to the point: Continuous problems due to asymmetric material accumulation
or rat holing inside the hoppers leads to very inaccurate results. Traditional level detectors are not adequate
to manage inventory properly.

The solution
The only appropriate solution in such
situations is to use a system which allows
for fast acquisition, transfer and analysis
of the weighing signal. This in turn is
only possible with very fast weighing ter-
minals. Imagine a reaction time of 20ms.
Once a predefined target is reached on the
scale, no later than 20ms later, the valve
receives its signal. And this includes logic
manipulation of the signal according to
predefined algorithms. This enables real
time management of the spill, very accu-
rate and repeatable hitting of the target
weights and very high production rates.
