Her works have been juried in many national exhibitions including NWS, WW, TWSA (Transparent Watercolor Society of America), Brand National, Audubon Artist, San Diego Watercolor International and many others. She has won numerous awards among these shows.
Fealing’s works also appear in many magazines and books, including Watercolor Magic, Artist Sketch Magazine, International Artist Magazine, Best Watercolor, and Splash (9, 10, 11,12 & 14), and Watercolor Secrets by North Light Books (2009).
Mark your calendars for the September 9th meeting!
Wow! this past year has been such a great year for SWS! I’m having one of those, “What have I done?!” moments thinking of the shoes I have to fill. I’m sure I speak for our entire membership when I say thank you, Mickey Archer, for such quality leadership. You are a true gentleman and have led with such grace, attention to detail, and humility.
It’s with a feeling of great honor and respect for all of you who help to make SWS a professional and quality organization that I slip into the Presidents’ position. Fortunately, I have several trusted advisors who’ve promised to keep me on the straight and narrow and a wonderful Board with whom to work. New Board members are Ron Bigony, 1st. Vice-President in charge of programs, Jenny Ackerman, 2nd. Vice- President in charge of membership, Bryce Weigand, 3rd. Vice-President in charge of Workshops, and Bill Johnson, 4th Vice-President in charge of Exhibitions. Pam Wilson is our new treasurer, Laurin Sullivan is our new recording secre-tary, and Sherry Daerr is our Corresponding Secretary in charge of Constant Contact. Other key positions that you’ll need to know are Judith Pafford, the Scene Editor, and Gail Delger, Standards and Practices and take-in contact for our Membership Show.
I’m excited about the year ahead as there are already plans for such great things. However, we can’t jump into those before I men-tion our May Treasure Hunt/Silent and Live Auctions. What a fun night we had! You won’t want to miss it next year. Thank you Jon-esy McConnell, for a fun job as live auctioneer and, Mickey Archer, as “spotter of the bids and encourager of higher bids.”
A huge thank you to all of you who contributed treasures for the silent auction. We had over 200 books donated that had minimum bids of $2.00-$10.00 and a variety of paint, watercolor paper and palletes, and portfolios. I can’t even name all of the rest of the items donated. I’m sorry I can’t list all of the generous members who contributed; however, a really big thank you goes to the follow-ing people who donated fabulous paintings for the live auction: Mickey Archer, Ron Bigony, Naomi Brotherton, Sherry Daerr, Ratin-dra Das, Pat Kochan, Priscilla Krejci, Jonesy McConnell, Gaylord O’Con, Teta Smith and to Ron Stephens who donated a spiffy French Easel. Also, a really big thank you to all of you who purchased treasures. Our sales total (with change rounded up) was $3500.00 toward the expenses for our Membership show in Sept. SWS members are the best!
I hope your paint brushes have been or are flying. Remember our two upcoming exhibitions: the Membership Show deadline is Monday, June 30 – Midnight deadline for entry of mailed CD’s and online entries, and the deadline for the Breaking BoundariesShow is July 31st. The timeline and prospectus for each show are on our website under “Exhibitions.”
Another event you won’t want to miss is the Preview Party Sunday, July 13, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Royal Lane Baptist Church, Dallas. This is a slide show of all of the paintings entered into the Membership Exhibition. Not only is it exciting to see all of the im-ages entered and the amazing talent of our membership, but it’s a great learning tool to see what stands out as really making an impression and what is really unique. Besides, it’s just fun to see and laugh with everyone during the summer. I always leave the Preview Party thankful for good friends, and inspired to PAINT!
I’m looking forward to seeing each of you on Sept. 9th for our next meeting. Our demo that night will be by Fealing Lin, our Member-ship Show Juror and September workshop presenter. Unfortunately, Fealing’s workshop Sept. 9-11is full; however, if you’re inter-ested in being on the waiting list, contact Bryce Weigand [email protected]. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the demo because Feal-ing is a joy to watch paint. Let’s all attend and kick off our ’14-'15 year with a bang.
One last thought, SWS is an inclusive group, invite other painters you know to join rather than assume they’re already members or just don’t want to join. Some of them may be as delusional as I was and think they have to be invited to join or be a “real” artist be-fore joining. I was so excited when I heard that anyone could join. Important reasons to invite others to join are: If one of them is your significant other, he or she will leave the meetings feeling grateful that you aren’t as “unique” as some of the rest of us; and just think, the more people you ask to join, the fewer times you’ll be asked to volunteer to do something.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso
My Life in Watercolor, So Far by Ron Stephens
After a 33-‐year career in Advertising as an art director and later as production manager at some smaller agencies around Dal-‐las, Ron retired in 2006. He checked out some books and started studying how to paint in watercolor. That watercolor is one of the most difDicult mediums to learn did not deter his interest. Luckily, about the time he was struggling the most, he joined a new watercolor instruction group at the Irving Heritage center being launched by Tom Wellman, (president of SWS at that time). He and Tom became friends, and later that year Tom invited Ron to an SWS meeting.
Tom was an avid plein air painter and convinced Ron that it would be fun and rewarding. Ron’s Dirst SWS paint out in Jefferson/Marshall in the fall of 2007 was a turning point for Ron, who was hooked.
Ron joined the SWS board in 2007 and began producing the SCENE for SWS, starting with the March 2007 issue. SWS also made good use of Ron’s art/graphics background in advertising, getting his help with the Member show prospectus. He was also responsible for changing the process for publishing the SCENE and Member Show prospectus by putting them on the web-‐site. For a while Ron still produced a 6 page black and white version of the SCENE for mail-‐only members.
Ron continued to crank out the SCENE and help with other graphics needs for the next year. As 2009 began with new presi-‐dent Herb Reed and Show Chairperson, Giza Elwazir, Ron was again innovative, transitioning the acceptance of show images through email rather than on color slides. Ron continued publishing the SCENE until 2012.
Ron is currently Publicity Chairman for SWS. Ron has also taught a once weekly Watercolor class at the Irving Heritage Center since 2009 when he took over from Tom Wellman who passed away.
Most of all Ron is proudest of the growth of his work over the last seven years. He owes most of this to the workshops attended, to include such notables as: Nita Leland, Carl Dalio, Naomi Brotherton, Arne Westerman, Mark Mehaffey, Ratrindra Das, Jane Jones, Skip Lawrence, Leslie Frontz, Maureen Brouillette, and Andy Evansen.
Ron started experimenting with non -‐ representational and abstract painting about 2008 and had an abstract accepted into the SWS show that year. Since then he has had 2 abstracts accepted to the SWS show and 2 to the WFWS show. Ron says, “Abstract painting in Acrylic and mixed media for me is pure joy. I go at it with a total intuitive “What If” strategy. It’s all about moving the paint around, making marks, building texture, covering up and pulling out underlying gems”. He still enjoys representational painting and aspires to be more proDicient at it and hopefully have a landscape or cityscape accepted into a show. Ron attributes his loose impressionistic style to painters that he admires like Frank Francesi, Sterling Edwards, or Erick Weigardt. Ron con-‐fesses, “I just bounce around too much, I need to establish a recognizable style that everyone will identify with. I must keep searching and be persistent.” We know you will, Ron.
