As we recall the memorable years in science from
the time we were freshmen, we recall the teacher whohas served as a friend to all, an aid to those in need,
and a refresher to those who are disturbed. With his vast
intellect, sense of humor, and happy outlook— as well as
his ability to solve a problem which has no answer—hehelped us to complete four joyous, worth-while years at
Saratoga Central.
And so, it is with humble appreciation and muchpride that we, the Senior Class, dedicate this, our 1966
Sentinel , to Mr. Richard Whitley— a small giant of a
man who made a great impression on all of us.
He jokes to make the hour seem shorter
He won't stand for talking or disorder.
He knows what he's doing, and does what he knows
It's no easy task, but it's the life he chose.
A life that he loves, enjoys, and respects
Of science and labs and chemistry texts.
A good man to lead, a good man to follow
Laughing and learning for a good today
And a prepared tomorrow.

The 1966 Sentinel is not merely what it appears to
be— a cover, pages, pictures, and words. This is only
the surface of the annual, but underneath it lies hard
work, sacrifices, frustrations, laughter, and pride.
The things that happen each day . . . the faces, the
places . . . the victories, the defeats . . . the thousandsof big and little events— all of these are a part of our
lives and the things we shall remember for years to
come. We, the staff, hope this yearbook will not only
record these events for the present but also serve as a
MARY ANN SPEIGHT treasury of memories for the future.

Work begins on the Sentinel as the staff starts searching for ideas.

A new year • • . A new principal
As we go through life, we should all be striving to
climb toward some goal. In the past four years, you,
the Seniors of 1966, have been striving toward the goal
of graduation. In working toward this goal, you haveaccumulated many important things— knowledge, friends,
self-discipline, skills, and habits— all mingled to provide
a firm foundation at the foot of your stairs. May you use
this accumulation of your past years to continue to climb
the stairway of life to even larger, more important goals.
Look back, if you like, but keep forever moving step
by step toward what you want most to be.
Sincerely,
Alvin Narron, Jr.
Our new principal finds that there is much work to be
done before the busy day begins.
Mr. Narron arrives at school bright and early each morning with a cheerful smile.

student Council • •
President of Student Council, Mac Owens.
A successful school is largely de-
pendent on the students' abilities to
govern themselves. It is for this pur-
pose that the Saratoga Central Stu-
dent Council is now on active duty.
The Student Council consists of rep-
resentatives from all the classes and
organizations that work together with
the officers and sponsor for the benefit
of all the students and faculty. Theydo their best to fulfill the desires of
all and strive for a better relation-
ship between the school and students.
Money-raising projects consist of
various activities for the school. Themoney is spent in a way which will
benefit both the students and faculty.

girls learn to become more efficient homemakers. The F.H. A, 's purposes
are eightfold and include the promoting of growing appreciation of the joys

worthy home membership, the encouraging of democracy in home and

All right, boys, who rolls next?
Coaches: MR. CHARLES BOYKIN and MR.JAMES H. DeRATT.
At the end of last year's baseball season, the Rebels had racked up the
County Championship with a 9-1 record for the conference games and a
15-3 record for the whole season in the county. They went on to play in the
State Tournament, making a very good showing by winning against Brogden and
Oxford Orphanage. The third game against Vanceboro was the deciding
game for the Rebels. The opposing team squeezed by Saratoga with a 2-0
win.
During the summer the Rebels participated in a Tri-County League con-
sisting of Wilson, Wayne, and Edgecombe counties. They came out on top
as conference champions, another trophy to add to their long line of victo-
ries.
Although graduation took a good number of the squad, the Rebels plan
to rebuild and hope for a good comeback.
