This question arises often when I am out to dinner with a group
of people. I am asked to pick a wine for the table that will satisfy
everyone. This is almost impossible, not only because each person
has their own preference for wine, but each will order his or her
own dinner independent of the others, which will invariably result
in a wide variety of foods on the table. The problem therefore
becomes how to satisfy as many people as possible with one wine
selection.
Depending on the number of people at the table, one way to
approach the task is to order both a white and a red wine. This is
always my first choice when dining with more four or more people.
The wines I like to select on these occasions are light-bodied whites
and medium-bodied reds. For white, I find Sauvignon Blanc to be
very versatile with almost all fish, vegetarian and chicken dishes. This
wine typically has a crisp, refreshing feel and doesnt dominate food
flavors. People who say they will only drink white wines will pretty
much always feel comfortable with a Sauvignon Blanc. With the red wine selection for a group there are two roads I can
take, depending on the style of restaurant were in. If meat and gamedishes and other big, flavorful meals dominate the menu, I like to
make the red choice a blended wine. This could be one of manydifferent blends that are popular today, such as Cabernet Sauvigno
combined with Merlot, Cabernet with Shiraz, or Cabernet with
Sangiovese. These wines combine richness of flavor with a smoothness that will appeal to many red wine drinkers. If, however, the
menu is mostly middle-of-the-road style with pastas, chicken, lighsauces and salads, I will usually select a Pinot Noir. This wine is
probably the most versatile of all reds, and will usually appeal to b
red and white wine lovers. When dining in French restaurants, yocan call out for a red Burgundy and know you will get a Pinot Noi
When you are unsure of which wine to order with a large grou

make suggestions, and you should feel free to take advantage of thknowledge of the menu and their wines that pair best with it.

TheSkinny The Wine Garage is all about the juice. Its also about having funlike a kid in a candy store. The Wine Garage is, literally, a former gas station.
Todd, the wine buyer, travels far and wide to find top-shelf, affordably priced
wines. Inside, youll find more than 200 different labels neatly arranged in ca
on the floor and an engaging staff who are friendly, attentive and most impor
tantly, they know their wines.
Buzz Despite its funky space, the Wine Garage is a wine lovers best friend.
Reminiscent of visiting your favorite record store (yes, kids, once upon a tim
thats where you had to buy your music), the fun is going through all the cas
and finding something youve never heard of. All the wines have been test
driven by the staff, so, whatever you select, you wont be disappointed.
Value Ultimately, the Wine Garage is about value. Its no secret that in Napa
Valley, its difficult to score a highly rated red for less than $65, but the Wine
Garage manages to do it all the time. The staff takes great pride hunting dowunusual and lesser-known, limited-production wines and passing their haggl
finesse on to us.
Ten-second summary Nothing in this hip hideaway is more than $25 (with
few under $15)! The Wine Garage is stocked with premium, small-lot wines
that you wont find at BevMo, Trader Joes or your local wine store (plus, they
a better job storing their wines at the correct temperature).
Best bets In addition to all the labels the Wine Garage represents, they also
produce their own lip-smacking blends. My in-house favorites are: 2009 Joy
Ride White, 2008 Russian River Syrah, 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet, 2008
Chihuahua Cabernet and 2006 Hillside Cabernet.
Under-the-radar Go old-school with half-gallon jugs filled while you wait u
their specifically designed service station nozzles. Not only are the wines delicious (and affordable), the jug is crazy fun conversation at the table. Its also
cool gift.
Secrets For the next few weeks, receive an additional ten percent off the
already low prices when you purchase six bottles. Twenty percent on a case.
Better yet, the Wine Garage has the BEST wine club in the valley and they
ship just about everywhere.
Insider If youre a serious wino, get on the inside track for ultra exclusive d
by hooking up with the Wine Garage on Twitter and Facebook (wine club
members get first crack to cream-of-the-crop finds).

FEATURE STORY | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
by Josh Stein
Mumm Napa is guided in everything
they do by the vision of the man who
founded the property, Guy Devaux. G.H.
Mumm, a renowned French Champagnerie,
was one of the first of the Old World houses
to realize the United States had locations
where sun, soil, and rain could combine to
create spots ready for their style of wine-
growing, and Guy Devaux, with more than
forty years of sparkling and still wine
production experience in France, South
America, and the United States, was given
the task of finding the growing and produc-
tion location worthy of the Mumm name. It
took him four years.
Monsieur Devaux finally found what he
was looking for in the Napa Valley, and in
1986, Mumm Napa was completed along the
Silverado Trail in the heart of the RutherfordDistrict. The winery was built to allow for
wines produced according to methode tradi-
tionelle, which includes hand-pruning and
care of the vines, careful hand-harvesting into
the small famous yellow boxes rather than
larger bins, and in-bottle fermentation so
each wine has aged on the yeast.
While Guy Devaux passed away in 1995,
his spirit lives on in the winerys top wines
DVX and Devaux Ranch, as well as in the
continuation of traditional production under
Winemaker Ludovic Dervin, who brings
sparkling wine experience from Charles
Heidseick, G.H. Mumm, and Piper Sonoma
and still wine knowledge from the Russian
Rivers Hartford Court and Gary Farrell. The
winery has been certified by the Napa Green
Winery and Green Land programs, as well as
being the only winery in the United States to
be ISO certified.
Mumm Napa is, in fact, the remaining
large sparkling house to source their grapes
exclusively from the Napa Valley, continuing
Guy Devauxs belief that Napa is the perfect
valley for New World bubbles.
The resulting wines display the best of
modern and traditional winegrowing. Mumm
Napa is well known for its award-winning
DVX, Brut Prestige, Brut Ros and Cuvee M,
as well as their many winery-exclusive
sparkling wines, Deveux Ranch, Blanc deBlancs, Sparkling Pinot Noirs and their
special re-release of Santana Brut, Carlos
Santana and winemaker Ludovic Dervines
artistic blend. Also available at the winery are
many award-winning Library Wines. Equally,
the winery also makes available Chardonnay
and Pinot Noir still wines, as well as large-
and small-format bottles of their sparkling
wines for those everyday or special occasions
in need of pizzazz.
Of course, if Mumm Napa were o
about its wines, it wouldnt be the wo
renowned wine country destination it is,
the real secret is to go at locals time, wh
is actually in the mornings before the h
and crowds, when palates are at th
sharpest and the Valleys best views are
crystal-clear light. Once you walk into
breezeway and are greeted by a staff memb
everything else is taken care of for you
except for deciding which of several differ
tours and tasting experiences you wish
enjoy.
On the tasting side, groups of less than
can taste without reservations on the outs
patio or in the glass-enclosed tasting sal
Each gives access to staff who really c
about your visit and presents views not to
missed. Even more special is the Oak Terr
tasting, which offers library wines with f
and cheese pairings, if you choose, wleisurely relaxation on the terrace. The terr
is built around a 180-year-old blue o
protection of which, in keeping with
Devaux spirit, delayed construction m
than nine months in ensuring no damag
the tree during the building. The result
line of sight over the Valley is magnificent
On the touring side, there is a 10 a
complimentary tour or the 11 a.m., 1 an

wines tasting for those so
inclined. Larger groups of six or
more havent been forgotten. The
winery recommends calling in
advance to guarantee a table for
your group.
Equally, the winery is wellknown for its Fine Art Photog-
raphy Gallery, which rotates exhi-
bitions, has included work by Art
Rogers and Blue Earth Alliance,
and is currently showcasing the
photographs of Robert Buel-
teman.
Year-round, the James OShea
Gallery houses twenty-seven
original Ansel Adams prints on
loan from grandson MatthewAdams. Sparkling wines and fine
art: what could pair better?
Mumm Napa is also host to
their Club Vivant members,
voted as the best wine club in the
Valley. In addition to receiving
sparkling wines shipped directly
to your door every other month,
members also participate in club
events such as lobster feeds,
bocce tournaments, Greekcruises and holiday dinners.
Special complimentary tastings
and discounts are just a few
reasons this wine club is rated
number one.
Clearly, at year twenty-five,
Mumm Napa and its staff can be
quite proud. Not only have they
carried on the discerning eye and
demand for highest quality of
Guy Devaux, they have continued
to push for even greater hospi-
tality and enjoyment of the
Valleys bounty. Monsieur Devaux
got it absolutely right. Come see
and taste for yourself why the
quest finally ended when he
looked out upon the Valley from
the Silverado Trail and knew he
had found the place for sparkling
wine in the Napa Valley.

For a relaxing and interesting winery visit
in Monterey County, check out the Hahn
SLH Estate Winery owned by the Nicolaus
Hahn Family which has made wine in
Montereys Santa Lucia Highlands for more
than thirty years.
Nicolaus (Nicky) and Gaby Hahn
discovered their love for California wines in
the mid 70s, eventually purchasing two
neighboring Monterey County horse and
cattle ranches that had been converted to
vineyard property. It was there that first
Smith & Hook Winery and then Hahn
Estates Winery were established.
The estate is naturally elegant, situatedagainst the magnificent backdrop of the
Santa Lucia Mountains. From the Hahn SLH
Estate Visitor Center which is open daily,
guests can taste several wines while enjoying
views across the expansive Salinas Valley. Its
the history at the Hahn SLH Estate, however,
that is the foundation of the setting.
It was Nicky Hahn, the Grandfather of
the Santa Lucia Highlands, who in 1988 sent
a letter to neighboring vintners advocating a
new wine appellation. Ultimately his
pioneering effort led to the creation in 1991
of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, now one
of this most exciting, sought and highly-
lauded U.S. wine appellations. Today, Hahn
Family Wines, still family-owned and oper-
ated, includes Nicky and Gabys son Philip
Hahn and daughter Dr. Caroline Hahn who
are active and prominent in the winery.
Intensely involved in the evolution of the
region, the Hahn SLH Estate is now keenly
focused on producing Pinot Noir. The Hahn
Family now owns 650 Santa Lucia Highlands
vineyard acres, with 400 of those acres
planted to Pinot Noir at elevations that rangefrom 200 to 1,200 feet. These meticulously
planted hillside vineyards produce the grapes
used to create the estate wines.
With ownership of more than 1,000 vine-
yard acres in Monterey, this leading winery
became certified sustainable through the
Sustainability in Practice (SIP) Vineyard
Certification Program. Hahn practices
sustainability through its dedication to its
employees well being, long time dedication
to environmental stewardship and dilig
farming practices.
In addition, because wine is alw
elevated with food, Hahn SLH Estate h
tapped Chef Brian Overhauser to deve
the first fully integrated culinary program
the Santa Lucia Highlands. Chef Overhau
is keenly focused upon fresh and lo
ingredients from within thirty miles of
wine estate. Hahn SLH Estate will so
feature The Kitchen, a state-of-the-art cu
nary center highlighting the best of the San
Lucia Highlands and the Salinas Valley.

passion for wine and prompted a move from
Los Angeles to Napa.
Terroir Napa Valley, made by Saint

Houdini, owned by Tim Dean, and focuses
on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and

other varietals.
Another Saint Helena local, Richard

SEARED AHI TUNA WITH CALABRIAN CHILI AIOLI
by Khambay Khamsyvoravong, HKG Tasting Room Chef de Cuisine
Calabrian Chili Aioli
1 egg yolk Calabrian chilis to taste
1 egg 10 oz. canola oil
lemon, juiced Salt, to taste
In a blender, add egg yolk, egg, lemon juice and Calabrian chili (these little
peppers pack a lot of heat, so add as much as you can stand). Blend until fairly
smooth. While the blender is on, drizzle in canola oil and add salt to taste.
Seared Ahi Tuna with Summer Squash
1 zucchini 1 pound ahi tuna
1 yellow summer squash Pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon butter Salt, to taste
Thinly slice summer squash. Heat a saut pan until it is hot. Add butter and
summer squash, season with salt and pepper. Quickly saut squash for about
30 seconds and transfer to plate as the base for the tuna.
With the same saut pan, heat until it is hot. Season tuna with salt & pepper
to taste. Sear tuna until you get a nice browning on each side (about 15
seconds on each side). Transfer to a cutting board and slice into thick slices
Place on top of sauted summer squash and serve with Calabrian chili aioli.
Who doesnt love picnics? Whether its a
trip to the beach, an evening at the Farmers
Market or just a lazy afternoon on your own
patio, wine always plays an essential part.
With these long summer evenings, Im
always looking for something a little
different to bring out and the 2009 HKG
Estate Pinot Ros is perfect. Ros wine is
light, fun and exciting to drink, and I love
opening the bottle with that distinct soft red
hue that has everyone wondering what you
are drinking.
This recipe is from Khambay Khamsyvo-
ravong, HKG Estate Tasting Room Chef de
Cuisine who knows how to perfectly pair
foods with the HKG Estate varietals. HKG
Estate wines are the ultra-premium wines
produced by Hop Kiln Winery from all
estate grown grapes in the Russian River
Valley. The 2009 HKG Estate Pinot Ros is
a perfect match for the seared tuna as this
dry style Ros highlights the Calabrian chili
spice while the fattiness of the dish keeps
the wines tannins in check. Slightly sweet
with a hint of strawberry and tropical guava
characters, the Ros pairs well with the
flavors of ripe summer squash. This seared
tuna recipe is quick, easy and so tasty. The
squash brought nice vibrant colors to the
plate but also made the dish feel light so it
is ideal for summer dining while the wine
retains its bright acidity and finishes crisp,
dry and refreshing.
The HKG Estate Tasting Room in Glen
Ellen offers a selection of current wines
produced by Hop Kilns talented young
winemaker, Chuck Mansfield. If you wou
like to enjoy this pairing, the tasting room
open Thursday through Sunday from 12
p.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations are recom-
mended and can be made by calling (707
938-7622. They also have a new summe
menu featuring both savory and sweet pa
ings showcasing the seasonal produce fro
Sonoma. As if all this wasnt enough, the
is a wonderful display case containing th
decadent desserts and pies that can be
enjoyed with a glass of wine or taken awa
With all of these delicious treats, you wil
not want to miss out on such an enjoyab
experience.

Summer Movie Series Benefits Napa Valley Family Centers
Sterling Vineyards, the landmark Calistoga winery, announces the
ninth annual Sterling Silver Screen Series. Once again, through the
generosity of NBC Universal, the 2011 summer season of movies in
the vineyards will feature classic and neo-classic films in a range ofgenres from the Universal archives. All proceeds from the summer
screenings will benefit two local non profits; the Calistoga Family
Center and the St. Helena Family Centers. To date, the Sterling
Silver Screen program has raised more than $120,000 for local char-
ities.
The next Sterling Silver Screenings features the Marx Brothers in
Monkey Business on Saturday, August 20. Made in 1931, this classic
comic favorite was the boys first Hollywood feature and stars
Groucho, Zeppo, Harpo and Chico as stowaways on an ocean liner.
Hilarious antics ensue as they encounter gangsters and true love while
avoiding capture by the crew.
Seabiscuit, on Saturday, September 10, is the true story of the
Depression-era racehorse that, despite his small stature and a slight
limp, became an unlikely track champion and symbol of hope for a
generation of Americans. Seabiscuit united his owner, trainer, jockey
and an entire nation and proved that heart and tenacity can triumph
against all odds.
The season concludes on Saturday, October 1 with Saboteur, a
1942 Hitchcock thriller. When sabotage destroys part of an aircraft
factory, plant worker Barry Kane is accused of the crime. In an
attempt to clear his name, he sets out to track down the man he
believes to be the actual saboteur. The two men confront each other
in a memorable showdown atop the Statue of Liberty. A precursor toNorth by Northwest and The Fugitive, the Saboteur screenplay was
written by the legendary Dorothy Parker.
The Sterling Silver Screen Series is very popular with Valley resi-
dents said Mark Mathewson, Sterling Vineyards Visitors Center
Manager. Remarkably, we have fans that plan their summer getaways
around our screening schedule. Bring your friends and family to Ster-
ling, watch a great movie over a glass of wine and benefit two local
causes.
Each screening offers wine tasting and festival seating on the S
ling Vineyard Meadow at Sterling Vineyards, 1111 Dunaweal Lan
Calistoga. All Sterling Silver Screen films are suitable for inform
family viewing; however, parents are suggested to review MPAA a
sories online in advance of attendance - and note that some filmsnot rated.
The grounds open at 7 p.m. and guests are encouraged to ar
early, dress in layers and bring a blanket or low backed beach ch
to sit on. A pre-show of classic cartoons, followed by the feat
presentation, begins at dusk. Admission tickets are $10 for adults
$5 for children (under 16). All proceeds from tickets sales an
percentage of wine sales benefit the non-profit Stars & Vines Fu

As Frank Vezer says with great pride, The 2006 and 2007 vintages
of Vezer Cabs and Zins rock the house. In the last 18 months, both
in the major national and international competitions, Vezer has wongold, double gold and tied for Best in Class for North Central Coast
Appellation.Only some of the finest restaurants and wine shops in the country
carry Vezer, and only by special arrangement. The wines range from
$50 to $100 retail, but wine club members get a great discount and aguaranteed of allocations. If you try to get this wine anywhere else if
you can even find it you can expect to pay close, to or more than,$200 per bottle. The winery has discovered that when people join
they do not let their membership go. In fact, Vezer has one of the
highest club retentions of all time. There are many reasons to joinother than the award-winning wine shipments and the benefits that
give you VIP status and recognition. Theres ambiance that you simply
cannot get anywhere else, free tastings for up to four to six people, aprivate tasting room and club room onsite, ATV tours, free wine club
pick-up parties with live music, exceptional food and wine servedright from the barrels.
Winter pick-up parties are usually barrel burning events, roasting
linguica, Hungarian Paprika Bacon and sausages from all over theworld, accompanied by hearty Zins, some seductive Cabernets, Petite
Sirah and Barrel Room Select Blends. And try roasting smores over theopen fire while tasting some of the finest white and ruby Ports.
At the spring and summer pick-up parties there are outd
movies, barbecues and live music in the gardens, either at the Pri
Ranch or the small Western Village of Mankas Corner. (The Vezbought Mankas Corner, in its entirety, several years back and re
vated into a European-style oasis. Here you feel like you were onset with Russell Crowe in the movie A Good Year.) Throughout
year there are special concerts and formal dinners at the winery an
the private ranch. Just imagine one of Americas greatest tenors starwith the ballet Besame Mucho as the light slowly turns its focus
the star standing in the middle of the vineyard, secluded in a primile-long valley owned by the Vezers, then all the sudden this be
tiful blond in a cobalt blue gown starts on the hillside nearby with
instrumental solo with her electric violin that simply resonthroughout the valley. Just as the sommelier pours you a wine r
from a magnum of one of Vezers private reserves, all while enjoy
wild boar, Moroccan chicken or filet mignon. As owner Frank Vesays, It is truly the opportunity of a lifetime, and it is here for yo
enjoy! The wine club, due to the limited production and quaint pri
settings is anticipated to be capped at 1,000 members. The C
consists of 250 spots for Chieftains VIP Chairmens, and 750 Emembers and these two quotas are quickly filling up. Stop by and v
the Vezers and join either club at the tasting room or you can even jonline at www.vezerfamilyvineyard.com.

Named as the place to custom crush yourwine in Napa Valley, by Food and Wine magazine,Judds Hill was started by the Finkelstein family, who began their own winemaking story in the early70s, as real life garagistes. Their first productionarea was their garage in a canyon in SouthernCalifornia and it was there they first learned abouthandcrafted wines in the purest sense.
In 1979, they purchased a ranch just south ofSt. Helena, Napa Valley and began growing grapesand making wine for real. Art and Bunnie Finkel-stein built Whitehall Lane Winery, made somepretty great wines there, and sold it several yearslater. Soon, Art and Bunnie, along with son, Juddand daughter-in-law, Holly, began crafting smalllots of ultra-premium Napa Valley wine from theirestate vineyard under the Judds Hill label.
In the early 90s, they pioneered MicroCrush togive grape growers and wine enthusiasts thechance to make their own custom handcraftedwine. Today, that facility is state-of-the-art, but thegaragiste spirit is alive and well.
For wine lovers of all levels, here is a realchance to learn and experience what being a wine-maker is truly like from the folks that coined theterm MicroCrush more than 20 years ago.

NAPA VALLEY | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
By Abigail Zimmerman
In 1969, Sonoma County issued a winery permit to two enthusi-astic entrepreneurs in pursuit of Pinot and Chardonnay. It was the first
time in almost 20 years that Sonoma issued a winery permit. SonomaCounty picked wisely.
Norman deLeuze and partner Gino Zepponi the ZD in ZD
Wines were two aerospace engineers with a penchant for makingBurgundian varietals of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This new winery
permit would alter the lives of both men and their families forever.
Pooling resources, Norman, Gino and Rosa Lee (Normans wife)rented a small farm building in the Carneros region. They purchased
wine grapes, some 50-gallon oak barrels and a redwood vat. Three
hundred cases of Pinot Noir and a small batch of White Riesling repre-sented ZDs first commercial vintage in 1969. The rest, they say, is
history.ZD Wines is still a family run operation; Julie, Brett and Robert
deLeuze have taken the torch from their parents and have furthergrown this premiere Napa Valley winery.
At ZD Wines, a commitment to family is equal to their commitment
to sustainably grown and produced wines. Before there was green oreco or organic, there were Norman and Gino out in their vineyards
in what is now known as Carneros. This was 1969 and they were still
hobbyists. But these visionaries shared a passion for the earth andhealthy farming. Today, some 40 years later, ZD estate vines are still
farmed 100% organically. Their winery is 100% solar run and theyrecycle all of their wastewater with an aerobic digester and a reclama-
tion system. (Pause for applause.)
Family and responsible winemaking are vital to the ZD Winesfamily as is giving back to the Napa Valley community that has
nurtured and sustained their dream for so many years.
Which is why this month on Saturday, August 20th from noon to4 p.m., ZD Wines will be hosting the ZD Summer Wine Celebration
specifically benefiting the Napa Boys & Girls Club Teen Center.ZD family and staff will be pairing current and new releases with
foods cooked personally by the deLeuze family. Founder and march Rosa Lee, uncles and aunts, children as well as grandchildren
already paired off and wickedly competitive about which foods wil
the most popular. You be the judge! Already on the lineup will be
fresh Ceviche with the Rosa Lee Pinot Grigio, Mushroom Crostini w
Pinot Noir, and Dry Rubbed Grilled Baby Back Ribs paired withBarbera And thats just the start of it.
Live music will be provided by Marketing Director Scott Fergu
and his band, The Staves. They will be performing groovy rock
roll, says Scott with a grin.
Entirely 100% of all ticket sales and silent auction proceeds wil
to the Napa Boys & Girls Club Teen Center. The Center has bee
dear cause for the ZD Wines family. Granddaughter and ZD CalifoSales representative, Jill deLeuze was their Program Director in 2
(before joining the family business) and felt first hand the heartach
program planning for at-risk youth with little or no funds. So in 20
the family contributed $100,000 to overhaul the basement T
Center on Pueblo Avenue. The funds purchased everything from n
floors and walls to furniture, computers, electronics and even heasnacks delivered fresh every Monday by a ZD family member.
This years event will allow ZD Wines to continue their support
funding of the Teen Center. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at
door.
In terms of vino, do not miss two wines at this Celebration!
First is the 2010 Rosa Lee Pinot Grigio ($22). Produced from
lusciously grayish-pink clusters grown here in Carneros, this PGrigio is mouth-watering with ripe peach, apricot, honeysuckle
pineapple. Perfect for summer.
Second is the 2009 Rosa Lee Barbera ($25). Harvested from
Twin Creeks Vineyard in Wooden Valley, this Napa Valley Barb
expresses supple tannins and bright acidity. Bold flavors of red
fruit and hints of cedar, spice and vanilla will pair well with any por tomato sauce dish.

Search for Oldest Charles KrugWine Bottle Announced
Bottle to be part of history exhibit at Napa Valleys first winery
In time for the 150th anniversary of Napa Valleys first winery, thePeter Mondavi Sr. Family announces a search for the oldest CharlesKrug Winery bottle in existence. Founded in 1861, Charles Krug
Winery is the birthplace of the Napa Valley wine industry and has
been in the Peter Mondavi Family for nearly 70 of its 150 years.Peter Mondavi Jr. puts his family winerys history in perspective:
Charles Krug was founded the year President Lincoln was inaugu-rated, and the year the Civil War began. At the time, Napa Valley was
essentially the Wild West. Charles Krug first planted Mission grapes
on his St. Helena estate but he soon replanted to European varietalswhich he felt would make better wine. Wines made at the time would
have likely included claret, sherry, Madeira, sweet Tokay and Riesling,
the latter hugely popular with many of the German immigrant-winemakers in Napa Valley in the late 1800s.
Readers are encouraged to scour their wine cabinets, cellars, closetsand caves for Charles Krug wine bottles, empty or full, dating either
from pre-Prohibition or the Peter Mondavi Family era which began
with the 1944 vintage. Bottles deemed contenders will be authenti-cated by experts in the wine department of Sothebys auction house in
New York. The Peter Mondavi Family may purchase the winningbottle for display at the winery.
Plans are for an exhibit of historic artifacts from Charles Krug
Winery, which will include a towering 9000-gallon vintage redwoodfermentation tank and Charles Krugs original basket press, which he
used to crush the first harvest at his fledgling winery. The estates
Redwood Cellar will house the exhibit. The huge structure with itsmany-gabled roof and impressive belvedere was built by Charles Krug
in 1873 after his original cellar burned to the ground. On the NationalRegister of Historic Places and a California Historic Landmark, the
Redwood Cellar was restored recently to hold the Peter Mondavi
Familys reserve barrel aging room. The Cellar will eventually housethe winerys new tasting room and visitors center.
To submit an entry, visit Charles Krug on Facebook and tell them
about your bottle and post a photo, or email the story and photo [email protected] by December 31, 2011. Contenders
for the oldest bottle will be contacted with next steps.Early entries may be displayed at our annual Tastings on the Lawn
150th Anniversary celebration on September 10. For more informa-tion about the event, visit the website at charleskrug.com.
Charles Krug Winerys 150-year history traces the transformation
of the Napa Valley from Wild West to wine country destination.
With a legacy of nearly 70 years at Charles Krug, the Peter MondaviFamily is dedicated to ecological stewardship in order to preserve the
land for their children and future generations. Those efforts tosteward the land and preserve the winerys historical legacy are
earning new respect for a family long identified with California wine.
