Principal’s Message
Communication with parents is important to the success of schools, and more importantly, important to
the success of students.
For the school, we can benefit from forming a positive relationship with parents and learn about student
needs – this will help us better personalize learning for students.
For students, there is substantial evidence that parent involvement raises academic achievement. With
continuous communication, student’s motivation for learning is improved. Improved behaviour, better
attendance, and a more positive attitude towards school is realized – this really helps everyone and
improves student learning which is what it is all about!

Mini House Projects
This term the senior shop students have been working on mini houses
built to scale. This involved them sketching their house, drafting the
building to scale and then constructing the project using proper building
principles. The students will apply their building standards to a
culminating shed assignment in the next month.
Cirque du Soleil On November 1 and November 2nd Elkford Secondary students had the opportunity to attend a trip to
Lethbridge, AB to watch Cirque du Soleil “Corteo”. Student were able to visit the Park Place Mall for 2
hours before the show to go shopping and grab a bite to eat. At 6 pm, the students got on the bus to
head to the Enmax Center to purchase souvenirs before the show started. The show, which began at
7:30, was mind boggling, magnificent and full of talent. Thank you to Karen Mills and SYS.tem for making
this enjoyable trip available for students at Elkford Secondary School to take part in.

PE10
Mr. Gulyas’ PE 10 has been busy since the last newsletter instalment. Students have had the opportunity
to experiment with throwing the javelin, leaping over hurdles, and participating with some of the
rudimentary points of rugby. Most recently, students have been working on their strength and
conditioning, along with some outdoor adventure. Students are currently learning the basics of weighted
compound-movements and how to develop their own personalized fitness plan. Students also
experienced a presentation on avalanche safety, along with hands on skill development with the beacon,
probe and shovel. Students had their classroom learning inside the school and then went out into their
nearby backcountry. We worked with Avalanche Canada instructors where students experienced their
learning in their own backyard. PE 10 has been busy and will continue into the New Year.
Breakfast Program Donation
A huge thank you goes out to the members of EVC Church for raising $200 for the breakfast program at
ESS! Our staff and students are so grateful to be part of such a generous community, you’re the best!

Elkford Secondary School Sr Girls Volleyball Champions
The Elkford Secondary School (ESS) Senior Girls Volleyball Team consists of eleven girls in grades 9
through 12. The girls are fortunate to be coached by three dedicated coaches, Dustin Murray, Erick
Canlas and Jessica Bohn.
After a successful school season the team headed to the Kootenay Championship held in Sparwood on
November 16 & 17. The ESS Senior Celtics played well and came home as the Kootenay Champions! The
Celtics have qualified to go to the Girls “A” Volleyball Provincials which will be held this year in Nanaimo,
BC from November 28 – December 1.
This is the second year in a row that the Elkford Senior Girls have won the Kootenay Championship and
will be attending Provincials. Last year the team placed 4th at Provincials. This is a great accomplishment
for our school and our community. Twenty teams from across the province will be competing for the
provincial championship. Going into Provincials, the Elkford Secondary team is ranked third in the
province.
The team would like to thank their sponsors, the community, Elkford Secondary and all of their fans for
the support they’ve received! Your support is truly appreciated!

Student Council
This year on Student Council we have been busy with various planning and discussion sessions to
deliberate on our activities presented so far this year. Once school got underway, we launched our
Student Council which was quickly followed by our annual Terry Fox Foundation fundraiser. The
fundraising was kicked off with a presentation on Terry Fox and the history behind the run. We then
organized the school run and raised funds throughout the week. After this event we started to plan our
Halloween Spirit Week. This was yet again a success with many activities over a five-day period. These
days included a variety of themes such as Fantasy Friday, Meme Monday, Twin Tuesday, Halloween
Wednesday, and PJ day on the Thursday. We had many lunch time activities ran by our Junior Student
Council and two last block activities where we had our annual Name That Tune contest. The Fernie
Ghostriders also came to play floor hockey against our team of ESS students. All in all, our progress on
Student Council has been positive so far and we look forward to welcoming new members throughout
the year.
