We have planned a conference with sessions that we hope are interesting, intriguing, supportive, and just plain fun! In addition to learning at the sessions offered, we hope that you visit with friends and make new acquaintances, establishing the NEACRAO connection with colleagues. What does NEACRAO stand for?NEACRAO is the New England regional association of AACRAO, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, whose purpose is “to promote the advancement of higher education in its fullest and broadest implications.” We are an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting close to 1,000 members representing approximately 150 institutions from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Get to Know NEACRAO• Serve as a co-chair: co-chairs coordinate and run the various portions of RCD and the Conference. • Join the Board: the Executive Board governs the Association and is responsible for its overall activities and functions. 1D: Course Scheduling—Who’s on First?We all have favorite parts of our job as well as areas that we dread. For the sake of discussion, let’s compromise and say that the preparation of a course schedule falls somewhere in between. It’s an opportunity to interact with department chairs and impact creating optimal course delivery scenarios, assuring that students have access to a variety of courses distributed throughout the day. On the flip side, there is an unnamed contingent who wants to deliver courses in a manner, location, and time frame that best suits them. That said, we all face issues concerning the building of a schedule including the determination of time slot allotment, room ownership,

1E: The FUNdamentals of FERPA and MoreJoin Steve McDonald, NEACRAO’s resident FERPA expert, for a presentation on the structure and most significant provisions of FERPA, latest guidance, and proposed amendments. It’s the law that we would like to forget about (and sometimes do) but that affects virtually every facet of our work. Whether you’re a FERPA newbie or a FERPA maven, and regardless of what office you work in, there is something for you in this session. several people, and making an offer. It is a process that requires some planning if one wants to make the best hire possible. Learn how to manage the first interview to reveal each candidate’s skill sets, personality type, and attitude. Find expert tips on legal reference checks and how to use the information to inform your final decision. 2D: Best Strategies for Working with Helicopter and Velcro ParentsIn this session, we will explore the ever-increasing participation of parents in the higher education experience. While some seem to hover around their students and are referred to as “helicopter parents”, there are also those that cling more tightly, inspiring the newer term “velcro parents”. We will discuss various contributors to this phenomenon and will also share strategies for partnering with parents in meaningful and effective ways. 3C: Supporting Our Student VeteransSince9/11,overtwomillionmenandwomen have served in the military. Nearly 80% of those have served in a combat zone or actually been in combat. About 50% of those who saw combat come home with psychical, emotional, or psychological injuries. These issues are roadblocks for success

in higher education. Many veterans start college; many do not finish. How can we help veterans to learn the life and coping skills they need to succeed in education? One way is through Equine Assisted Learning. Equine Assisted Learning has been proven to be effective at teaching veterans the important skills they need to successfully reintegrate into the civilian world. This presentation overviews what Equine Assisted Learning is, how it works, and the benefits of participating in an Equine Assisted Learning program.Presenter: Dave Ferruolo, MSW, Health First Family Care

3D: How Is the Explosion of Online Education Impacting On-campus Pedagogy and Facilities? With the rise of MOOCs, SPOCs, DOCCs, and other innovations, how is the classroom experience changing on campus? Are these technologies and initiatives impacting in-person education? 4A: Presenting with ConfidenceIn the workplace, communicating well is essential. For many people, the very idea of giving a presentation induces terror. For others, it may just be a case of butterflies in the stomach. Whatever your comfort level, this session will give you solutions for overcoming or dealing with the fear of speaking in public. And once you do present, you don’t want folks snoozing during your presentation! So, we will also address the elements that make a presentation engaging and that hold the interest of your attendees. 4B: Creating a Caring Community on Your CampusA Caring Community is one that supports the emotional, psychological and physical health of members of the university community. This initiative would be designed to work in concert with other university resources. Creating a Caring Community would take into consideration the current climate of the institution and develop goals to become a more compassionate place to work, live, and thrive.
