recognizebothherscientificachievementsandherciviccontributions.Anelementaryschoolinthecityisalsonamedafterher,whichisparticularlyappropriate,asDr.GebbierecallsthatAuntKatharinealwaysentrancedherandherplaymateswiththesuitcaseofexperimentssheusedtobringtothehouse—shewouldshowthechildrenhowtomakedifferentcolorsbydippingglassrodsintofilmsofoilfloatingonwater.

Dr.Gebbiewasnotonlyinspiredbyhernamesakeaunt,butshealsofollowedinherfootsteps—asdidDr.Gebbie’smotherandanotheraunt—byattendingBrynMawrCollege.(Dr.Gebbiewrylyrelatedthatonher15thbirthday,hergrandmotherfirstcongratulatedherforturning15,andthenpointedoutthatherAuntKatharine

was already entering Bryn Mawr at age 15….)Dr.Gebbiemajoredinphysics,asheraunthad,andwasoneofonlythreestudentswiththatmajorintheclassof1957.ShewentontostudyastronomyandearnedherPh.D.inphysicsfromUniversityCollegeLondon.In1991,afteralongcareerattheJointInstituteforLaboratoryAstrophysicsinBoulder,Colorado,shebecamechiefofNIST’snewPhysicsLaboratory,nowcalledthePhysicalMeasurementLaboratory.InherroleatNIST,Dr.Gebbiehasbeencalled“fearlessandcommittedtoexcellence.”Sheisalsocalled“high-flying”—inpart,becausesheisapilot;shehasflownhermother’ssmallplaneallaroundNorthAmerica.

Dr.GebbieacknowledgedthatherAuntKatharinewasarolemodeltoher,butthatshe

didnotrealizeituntilshewasolder.Itneveroccurredtohertoaskherauntwhatitwasliketobeaprominentwomanscientist—afterall,didn’teveryonehaveauntswhoweredistinguishedphysicists?ToDr.Gebbie,shewasherfunandentertainingAuntKatharinewhoalwayshadasuitcase,andamind,fullofwonderstoshare.

In memoriam

George J. Linde,along-timememberoftheRadarDivision,diedJanuary17,afteralongillness,whichhebattledcourageously.HisfamilyenduredtheNazioccupationandthenfledtoGermanywhentheSovietArmyinvadedin1944.DuringthedifficultyearsafterWWII,thefamilywassenttoaDisplacedPersonscampinAugsburg,Germany,whereGeorgeattendedelementaryschool.In1950,thecampswereclosedandtheresidentswereresettledintocommunitiesallovertheworld.TheLindefamilyfoundsponsorshiptosettleinHutchinson,Minn.

Aftershowinganearlyinterestinengineering,GeorgeattendedtheInstituteofTechnologyattheUniversityofMinnesotawherehereceivedaBSEEwithDistinctionin1965.HeworkedforoneyearattheIBMCorporationatRochester,Minn.,beforejoiningtheRadarDivisionatNRLin1966.

WhileatNRL,heearnedaMSEEfromtheUniversityofMarylandin1971.

Georgemadecontributionstomanysignificantradarprojectsoverhis41yearswiththeRadarDivision.EarlyonhebecametheprincipalinvestigatorfortheexperimentalReflect-ArrayRadarusedtovalidatenewconceptswhichultimatelyledtothespecificationsfortheAegisSPY-1radar.HewasalsoamemberoftheteamthatdevelopedanddemonstratedanewLowProbabilityofInterceptradarsystem.

HehelpeddesignanddemonstrateradarconceptsforthesecurelandingofaircraftaboardNavycarriersandwastheprincipalinvestigatorforaprojecttodevelopanddemonstrateECCMtechniquesforNavyradars.HewasprincipalinvestigatorforthedevelopmentanddemonstrationofaSurfaceSearchImage-While-ScanradarforcontinuoussurfacesurveillanceandISARimagingof targets of interest.

AlargepartofGeorge’scareeratNRLinthe 1980s was devoted to his assignment as the principalinvestigatorfortheSENRADradarbeinginstalledatNRL’sChesapeakeBayDetachment(CBD).SENRADwasarevolutionarynewradarconceptforfutureair-surveillanceradars,developedatNRLwithindustrysupport.Thisradarfeaturedaverywidebandwidthof850-1400MHz,whichmadetheradarresistanttoenemyjamming,allowedthe use of wideband waveforms for target imaging andclassification,reducedmultipatheffectsoverwater,andmadeitpossibletoimplementanoveltypeofheightfinding.AftertheworkonSENRADbecamedeclassified,adetailedpaperonitsdesignandperformancecharacteristicswaspublishedin2001 in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systemsinapaperco-authoredwithDr. Merrill Skolnik and Keith Meads.

In1995GeorgebecamethesystemsengineerandprincipaldesignerfortheWARLOCradar,theworld’shighestpower94GHzradar,latertobesitedatCBD.TheGyro-Klystrontubefortheradar,whichprovidesmorethan80kWofpeakpowerand10kWofaveragepower,wasdevelopedinajointprogramwiththeNRLElectronicScienceandTechnologyDivision.Hiscontributionsincludedtheoverallradardesign,thesystemintegrationintotwotrailers,andyearsofresearchinmanyareas

ofmillimeter-waveradarphenomenology.Thisresearchincludedpropagationeffects,seaclutterreflectivity,inversesyntheticapertureimaging,andthediscoveryofanewphenomenon,whichhenamed“airspikes,”thoughttobecausedbyintensepocketsofrefractiveindexfluctuation.HisworkonWARLOCresultedintheRadarDivisionofNRLacquiringaworld-classcapabilityinthetechnologyandphenomenologyofmillimeterradar.

GeorgeretiredfromNRLin2007butcontinued

hisassociationwiththeRadarDivisionworkingparttime,initiallyasare-employedannuitantandlaterasacontractor.

Athisretirementluncheon,aletterwasreadfromDr.MerrillSkolnik,formerSuperintendantoftheNRLRadarDivision.Thefollowingquotesfromthisletterspeakforthemselves:

“There are many different kinds of radar engineers–fromthosewhophilosophizeaboutradartothosewhobuildit,operateitormaintainit(usuallyalldifferentpeople)andallthoseinbetween.ButIconsideryoutobetheclassicalkindofrealradarengineerwhocreatesanewtypeofsystemthatneverexistedbefore.”

“…Youaretrulywhataradarengineershouldbe:onewhocanstartwithjustanideaandcreatesomethingimportantthatdidn’tpreviouslyexist,

thenutilizethisradartounderstandwhatitcando,andthentoconveythisknowledgetoothers.”

OvertheyearsGeorgereceivedfourAlanBermanResearchPublicationAwards,theNRLAwardofMeritforGroupAchievementfortheHighPowerW-bandGyro-KlystronAmplifierandWARLOCRadarDevelopment,andtheNRLTechnologyTransferAward.Heauthoredorco-authored32publishedpapersand21NRLreports.

In addition to his workinthefieldofradar George devoted muchofhissparetimetosomeuniqueand interesting hobbies. He was a master woodworker and built many piecesoffurniture,as well as elaborate computer-designedbowls,usingwoodfromacherrytreeinhis yard that hecutandseasoned.

Hehadanavidinterestinastrophotographyandspentmanynighthours,usuallyinthecoldwintermonths,photographingthenightskyfromanobservatoryhebuiltonhisproperty.Hehadaparticularinterestinthephotographyofnebulasandgalaxieswhereexposuretimesofhoursareoftenrequired.ThesephotographsgracethewallsofhishomeandwereusedonChristmascardssentto friends and relatives. He was an avid runner all his life and traveled to witness a number of world classtrackeventsincludingthe1972Olympics.GeorgealsohadbeenPresidentofOurSavior’sLutheranChurchatBryansRoad,MD,wherehewas intimately involved in the day-to-day affairs.

GeorgeandBeverly,hiswifeof46years,greatlyenjoyedtravelingintheUnitedStates,aswellastoCanadaandEurope.Hispreferredmethodoftravelwasalwaysbycar,andheinsistedthateveryonemusttravelcoast-to-coastbycaratleastonceinalifetime.TogetherGeorgeandBeverly did it a number of times. George and BeverlyalsoownedalargemotoryachtnamedImpatience,whichtheyusedtocruisealongthePotomacandtheChesapeakeBayonweekendsandvacations.

GeorgewillbesorelymissedbyhiscolleaguesatNRL,notonlyforhistechnicalexpertise,butforhis dry Minnesotan humor and unassuming manner. His was a life well lived.

ABSTRACT—TheexplosiononApril20,2010atDeepwaterHorizondrillingrigintheGulfofMexicoresultedinoilandgasrisingtothesurfaceandtheoilcomingashoreinmanypartsoftheGulf,andinthedispersmentofanoilplume4,000feetbelowthesurfaceofthewater.Despitespanningmorethan600feetinthewatercolumnandextendingmorethan10milesfromthe

wellhead,thedispersedoilplumewasgonewithinweeksafterthewellheadwascapped–degradedanddilutedtoundetectablelevels.Furthermore,thisdegradationtookplacewithoutsignificantoxygendepletion.Ecogenomicsenabledthediscoveryofnewandunclassifiedspeciesofoil-eatingbacteriathatapparentlyliveinthedeepGulfwhereoilseepsarecommon.Theresultsprovideinformationaboutthekeyplayersandprocessesinvolvedindegradationofoil,withandwithoutCOREXIT,indifferentimpactedenvironmentsintheGulfofMexico.

ABSTRACT—Enginesbasedontheinherenthigherthermodynamicefficiencyofthedetonationcyclehavebeendesirableformanyyears.Theyhavethepotentialtorevolutionizetheenginesusedinpropulsionandpowersystemsofthefuturebysignificantlyreducingthefuelconsumption.NRL has been in the forefront on identifying and

developingthescienceandtechnologybaseforenginesbasedonthedetonationcycle.Thistalkwillprovideanoverviewofthisexcitingfuturetechnology.ThemostdevelopeddetonationengineconceptistheintermittentorPulsed-Detonation-Engine,orPDE.WhilethePDEisattractiveinmanyways,theconceptalsohasmanyissuesthatarecontinuingtoberesolved.AnalternativeconceptthathasreceivedlessattentionistheRotating-Detonation-Engine,orRDE.AnRDEisatypeofcontinuousdetonationwaveenginewhereadetonationisinitiatedonceandthenremainsintactwhiletheengineisrunning.SimilartothePDE,theRDEhastheadvantageofbeingabletooperateunderawiderangeofconditionsand

Machnumbers.WehaveconductedandpublishedextensiveresearchonthePulse-DetonationEngineConcept.Now,weareconductingnumericalsimu-lationsonanidealizedRDEconceptinordertobetterunderstandtheflowfieldandperformancepotentialoftheseengines.Iwillpresentthehigh-lightsofourfundamentalnumericalsimulationbasedstudiesofbothdetonation-engineconceptsandputitinthecontextoftheongoingworld-wideeffortinadvancingthistechnology.
