No olvides tu mascarilla.
Don’t forget your mask. You must wear it at all times, even when you are out for a walk, in outdoor bars and cafés and in public enclosed spaces. Masks protect you as well as others.
Practise social distancing. It’s advisable to maintain a distance of roughly two metres. If you’re walking down a street or in our parks, try to keep this distance at all times. Follow the relevant instruc-tions every time you enter a place: you’ll find markings on the floor or signs indi-cating the appropriate distance.
Avoid crowds. Do this at all times, but especially in enclosed spaces.
BASIC PROTECTIVE MEASURESWash your hands frequently. You’ll find hand sanitiser in all restaurants, shops, hotels and museums. Use it! There’s also soap and water: the best way to stop the virus from spreading.
Take simple hygiene measures. They are very basic. For example, if you cough or sneeze, keep your mouth or nose covered by doing it into the crook of your arm. If you use a tissue it must be disposable, and you must throw it away immediately. There are plenty of rubbish bins in Madrid’s streets.

To ensure everybody’s safety, Madrid’s tourist information points and centres
have implemented a safety protocol es-tablished by the Institute for Spanish Tour-ism Quality (ICTE) in accordance with the “Especificación UNE0066-10 May 20 Ofici-nas de Información Turística” regulation. As a result, Madrid has become the first major city in Spain to have tourist information cen-tres with the Safe Tourism Certified seal.
Si por casualidad has tocado alguna superficie contaminada puedes contagiarte si llevas tus manos a boca, nariz y ojos.
Try not to touch your face. It’s hard, but it’s necessary. If you happen to touch a contaminated surface, you can catch the virus by touching your mouth, nose or eyes with your hands. That’s why it’s so important to wash your hands.
Don’t touch anything. More than is strictly necessary, of course. Espe-cially in supermarkets or other types of shops. In museums and cultural cen-tres, you can download brochures on your mobile phone. Restaurant menus are also available in digital format.
Change the way you greet people! In Madrid we like to give hugs and kisses, but for now we’ll have to make do with a “hello!” and a smile. It’s important to avoid physical contact.
IN ADDITION…The Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality (ICTE) has created a special seal, Safe Tourism Certified, which companies, organisations and tourist at-tractions and services can apply for. It certifies and guarantees that they have implemented the COVID-19 Health Risk Prevention System. You’ll see it at the city’s tourist information points and centres and in municipal services. In addition to this seal, there is also the Global Safety Stamp issued by the Worldwide Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which enables travellers to recognise governments and companies all over the world that have adopted standardised health and hy-giene protocols.
During your stay in Madrid, you’ll notice that a few customary practices have changed. Certain museums, like the Prado and the Reina Sofía, have reorganised their collections to give them better control over the number of people on their premises. But all businesses, including hotels and restaurants, have implemented effective hygiene, disinfection and safety protocols. Trans-port services (buses, metro and BiciMad) are operating as normal.
Take extra care to keep your everyday objects clean. Your bag, mobile phone, wallet... All the things we carry with us, which are more likely to be exposed, must be cleaned more often.
If you experience any symptoms, call a doctor. If you have a fever or dry cough, seek medical attention immediately. In Madrid, the phone number of the free coronavirus information hotline is: 900 102 112. However, if you’re having trou-ble breathing, experiencing chest pain or have any other serious symptoms, you should call 112.
If you’re staying at a hotel… follow all the recommended guidelines. Our hotels have implemented safety pro-tocols to ensure that guests have a pleasant and uneventful stay.
Pay by card. It’s preferable to use contactless payment in commercial establishments to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus. If you use cash, wash your hands afterwards.
sello “Safe Tourism Certified”.

From guided tours, concerts, talks to children’s workshops, Madrid will mark the eighth edi-tion of this grand celebration of the city’s historical, artistic and cultural heritage with over 100 activities in different spaces. The 2020 edition of MOM, now a classic fixture in Madrid’s cal-endar, will revolve around Benito Pérez Galdós, as this year marks the centenary of his death. Galdós-themed events will be held, among other venues, at San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, which will host the exhibition Galdós in the Span-ish Labyrinth, Casa de América, where there will be a discussion on his work and a screening of the film Nazarín, the Hemero-teca Municipal newspaper ar-chive, where visitors can view the writer’s letters to chronicler Mesonero Romanos, and the Cerralbo Museum, which will hold a talk on The Madrid of “The Spendthrifts” (in Spanish).
To further an understanding of his life and work, Madrid otra Mirada has organised

several guided tours (held in Spanish): The Authentic Ma-drid of Galdós (16th), which will pass through places like Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Pontejos, looking for charac-ters from Fortunata y Jacinta; Galdós: A Personal Tour (17th), through Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter); Madrid as a Place of Leisure in Galdós’ Work (17th), around El Retiro Park and Paseo del Prado; and From Tribunal to Conde Duque: The Other Galdosian Madrid (18th). There will also be other literary-inspired routes, such as Literary Accounts of the En-sanche de Madrid Expansion Plan: From Bergamín to Con-cha Espina (16th) or the urban hike From Dehesa de la Villa Park to Benito Pérez Galdós’ House (18th).
But this major cultural event hasn’t forgotten its traditional aim: to offer expert-led tours of the city’s representative build-ings. This year will feature tours of all sorts of spaces, ranging from past and present sports
venues like Beti Jai Fronton and La Zarzuela Racecourse (including a visit to Eduardo Tor-roja Museum) to cemeteries like La Almudena and parks like the Royal Botanical Gardens and El Capricho Park, where you can see a bunker from the Spanish Civil War. Cultural centres like Casa Árabe, Casa de México, CentroCentro, the Museum of the Americas, Matadero Ma-drid and Teatro Circo Price will also hold tours. In addition, the Museum of Popular Art and Traditions will host a children’s workshop to explain what the corralas (19th century residen-tial buildings) –the museum is located in one– so aptly de-scribed by Galdós were like.

This exhibition explores the role of women in the Spanish art establishment in the 19th and early 20th centuries. An over-view structured into two broad areas offers us a look at the im-age of women that was legiti-mised by the state with awards and exhibitions, as well as the place that women occupied in society. A display of some of the key works produced by women in the 19th century also paints a rough picture of the subsidi-ary role they were cast in by the establishment. The exhibition also highlights the journey –at times epic– that some women had to take to free themselves from the bonds imposed on their gender.

When Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza acquired a watercolour by Emil Nolde in May 1961, he initiated a change of direction in the Thyssen fam-ily’s art collecting practices. Although during the inter-war period his father, Heinrich Thys-sen, had amassed an extraor-dinary collection of pieces by the old masters, from the 1970s to the 1990s Hans became very active in collecting pieces from the primary artistic movements of the 20th century, among which Expressionism played a key role. For the first time in decades, this exhibition at the museum will showcase these works from its collection along-side the Expressionist pieces that remained with the baron’s wife and children.

LAS CRIADAS Sisters Claire and Solange are maids who serve a lady from the French haute bourgeoisie. Every night they engage in a perverse ceremony, a ritual where fact and fiction blend together in a lethal game of identity swapping. Claire is the lady and Solange is Claire. Solange is the lady and Claire is Solange. The sisters swap roles constantly. To them, the lady represents the top of the pyramid, the light that reflects the desire to be another. An-imosity and rage stemming from an awareness of their fate as servants inevitably leads to a fatal denouement. A Spanish adaptation of Jean Genet’s play The Maids, direct-ed by Luis Luque and starring Ana Torrent, Alicia Borrachero and Jorge Calvo.

The first production of the season, reworked for Venice’s Teatro La Fenice by Gianmaria Aliverta, maintains the Ameri-can setting devised by Giuseppe Verdi’s librettists to avoid cen-sorship, but rather than adher-ing to it completely, it moves the action to the time of Abraham Lincoln, giving an unexpected prominence to the racial ten-sions and political idealism of this tumultuous period.

Fariña doesn’t even give the audience members a chance to settle into their seats. Con-versations unfold at lightning speed between town residents and young people who talk, buy, consume and adeptly handle the famous Winston contraband cigarettes. A bit of everything is happening on a stage that offers a faithful overview of this dark chapter in Galicia’s history.

→ Teatro Circo Price
This story begins in a very com-plicated year… 2020, but also in 1970. That terrible season, the old Circo Price was destroyed. Stars were buried underground: circus legends who lived on in people’s memories and left their mark on the circus that stands there today. And today, this very night, times collide and a clown decides he can’t go on. He’s packing it in. But the Price’s ring asks for anoth-er chance. This production was the brainchild of Aránzazu Ri-osalido. Co-written with Pepe Viyuela and directed by Hernán Gené, it brings together circus performers, actors, magic and live music.

COMERY BEBERFOOD& DRINK
Almost everyone has stopped by the bars around Plaza Mayor at one time or another to enjoy a traditional calamari sandwich with a nice glass of beer. But when did the custom begin? That’s a hard, almost impossible, question to answer. Although fish began to arrive in Madrid from northern Spain in the 16th century, it wasn’t un-til well into the 18th century, with the reduction of transport times, that conditions became more conducive to its consumption.

El Brillante (no. 8, Plaza del Emperador Carlos V), which opened opposite Atocha Station in the 1950s, made the dish a must on Madrid’s menus. A traditional pub with a long zinc bar, it serves up to 2,000 calamari sandwiches per day, offering various options: calamari in a baguette, sliced lengthwise, in a ciabatta and in crusty white bread. The business is run by Alfredo Rodríguez, who inherited it from his father. He is assisted by a staff of seasoned waiters. So, what makes their sandwiches so successful? It’s because the calamari, dredged in chickpea flour and fried in virgin olive oil, is particularly tender and juicy. The fresh-baked bread is also a factor. If you prefer, you can order via WhatsApp (91 528 26 30).
It’s a time-honoured tradition to visit the area around Plaza Mayor at some point during the year, heading to one of the many bars and restau-rants that offer classic versions of this sandwich. They include Magerit (no. 22, Plaza Mayor), which opened in 1929 and can lay claim to being the first restaurant in the square to boast an outdoor seating area. You can sit out at one of their tables, inside at the bar or in the indoor dining room which looks out onto San Miguel Market and enjoy some traditional Madrid tapas and their star dish: the calamari sand wich washed down with a well-poured beer. Another must is Los Galayos (no. 5, Botoneras), which makes its sandwiches with lov-ing care, using top-quality calamari fried in olive
oil and served on tasty rustic ciabatta bread. Just opposite is La Campana (no. 6, Botoneras), which has a long-standing reputation as a great sand-wich shop. The calamari rings, which are large, nicely battered and fried in sunflower oil, can also be ordered on their own. The campana (bell) that the place is named after is rung to encourage customers to eat, as well as, first and foremost, whenever they leave a tip.
Many chefs in Madrid have set out to modernise the traditional calamari sandwich. Viva Madrid (no. 7, Manuel Fernández y González), next to Plaza de Santa Ana, makes its sandwiches on ar-tisan bread with herbed garlic mayonnaise. Casa Matute (no. 12, Plaza de Matute) serves them with black garlic mayonnaise and Apura (no. 45, General Oraá), the sandwich shop run by Peruvian chef Mario Céspedes, makes its calamari in tem-pura batter, seasoned with rocoto chili pepper. La Malaje (no. 10, Plaza de la Paja) offers a fusion version with an Andalusian twist: chopitos (baby cuttlefish) on mollete (a soft bread roll that orig-inated in Andalusia). Estado Puro (no. 4, Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo) makes its sandwiches with lemon and thyme mayonnaise, and they’re served with black garlic mayonnaise at Tablafina (no. 48, Paseo del Prado), the restaurant in the Hotel NH Madrid Nacional. This is our last stop. Note the way that chef Jesualdo Bermejo describes them on his menu: “Probably the best-ever calamari sandwich”. Ready to put that claim to the test? You’re in luck! We managed to get the recipe so all of our readers can make them at home.

LA RECETA
BOCADILLO DE CALAMARES(Tablafina)
Ingredientes:
¡Listo!
THE RECIPE
CALAMARI SANDWICH(Tablafina)
Ingredients:
Mollete (soft bread roll)Olive oilOne fresh squid or some baby squidFlourSaltMayonnaiseBlack garlicGingerOne lime
PREPARATION:
To make this sandwich, you need mollete bread. The first step is to steam it for four minutes (you can put it in a colander above a pot of boiling water). If you’re not making it to eat right away, wrap the steamed bread in cling film. If you are making it immediately, as soon as it’s done steaming slice it lengthwise to open it, but don’t cut all the way through. The two sides should remain attached. Add some oil to a non-stick pan and brown the bread lightly on both sides.
To make the filling, you’ll need fresh squid rings. Dredge them lightly in flour and add a pinch of salt before frying them for two minutes at 175° C. Once they’re done, place them on a piece of absorbent kitch-en paper to drain the excess oil.
Black (aged) garlic mayonnaise adds some zing to this sandwich. To make it, blend the garlic in a food proces-sor with five tablespoons of good-quality mayonnaise. The final step is to season it with grated ginger and a few drops of lime juice. Spread a couple of tablespoons of the mayonnaise mix over the bread, and then place the fresh-fried calamari on top. Enjoy!

Titled “made to dislike”, this collection of eye-catching rings, brooches and necklaces by Feeas (Remedios Vincent) leaves no one indiffer-ent. She makes all of her one-of-a-kind jewellery in her workshop in Conde Duque from items that she finds in antique shops and then repurposes.
ANILLARTE
The necklaces, bracelets and earrings that Maku Martínez creates in her workshop are unique pieces. She’s an expert in the techniques of roll-ing, welding, stamping, stone setting, carving and polishing of silver, as well as in making chain mail and in cutting, polishing and engraving gems. Her work is inspired by Navajo art and bohemian jewellery. “I love picking up my blowtorch and welding, I have so much fun with it that I could spend hours without putting it down”, she says.
Helmed by the Entío brothers, from a family with a long tradition in the jewellery business, this work-shop restores, alters and creates unique pieces. Although they are experts in precious gems, they believe luxury shouldn’t be the privilege of a se-lect few but rather a pleasure within reach of the majority. They choose their materials extremely carefully and work with them using centuries-old techniques, achieving spectacular results.

At the beginning of the last century, the Netherlands was the birthplace of a brand-new artistic style, an abstract form of art based on the relation-ships between rectangular shapes, planes of colour and straight lines. This exhibition brings together examples of works by Mondrian, the founder of this new artistic trend, and by some of his peers from the De Stijl movement.
