The Stewartville City Coun-cil voted to keep the current fire contract formula and policy for the 2012 budget and rejected the proposed contract that had been presented to the townships at their meeting Tuesday night, August 23. The finance committee had met with board members from the City of Racine, Racine Township, Pleasant Grove, High Forest and Sumner in response to their request to develop a formula based on building valuations. Mike Meyers was at the council meeting Tuesday night representing the township boards. The proposed contract would have reduced the annual cost for four of the townships: Racine township - $6,920.28; Pleas-ant Grove - $7,579.08; Rock Dell - $2,776.77; and, Sumner - $1,985.26. The contract would
have increased the annual cost for Stewartville - $15,427.58; City of Racine - $724.09; and High Forest - $110.01. “We are all on board with the proposed contract,” Meyers said.
“People are happy with the service they are receiving.” “We have been told that fifty percent of the fire usage is for the townships. But, we have not received any documentation to back that up,” he said. “The trust factor is important to the town-ships.” “I don’t think it was right when the city reduced its portion of the fire contract by $10,000 last year without letting the townships know,” Council member Judy Hanson said. “I don’t think that is the way you treat a partnership. We are benefitting as a city from your participation in the fire contract by sharing the cost.” Mayor Jimmie-John King said that the council has had to
reduce the city’s current budget by $163,000 dollars and has to trim that same amount from the 2012 budget. “With all the cuts we have made, if we would make an additional $15,000 cut, we would have to cut other programs important to the citizens of Stewartville,” Council member Gary Stensrud said. “Some of us do have options for fire coverage,” Meyers said. “You have not been open with us.” “I negotiated the last fire con-tract,” Council member Roger Hanson said. “We have made a step forward in being honest and open with the townships. I think we have a good service at a fair price. This is what we can offer you.” “I think it would hurt our bud-get,” Council member Lori Miller-Beach said. “I think we should keep it the same. I think we need to get them the information that they
The city of Eyota will receive $355,950 from a Minnesota Department Of Transporta-tion “Safe Routes to School” grant that City Clerk Marlis Knowlton and EDA Director Cathy Enerson wrote the appli-cation for earlier this summer. More than eighty cities within the state applied for the grant, and sixteen were picked to be awarded the money. This money will be used through-out the city bringing new proj-ects in and finishing up others that have been in the making for several years now. Sidewalks along Jefferson and Robert Avenue between fifth street and Knowledge Road will now be completed. The Knowledge Road trail between Robert and Jefferson
will also be extended, and a school speed zone near the elementary along Knowledge road will also be installed, ensuring the safety for the children. Twenty-nine curbs within the city will be redone or installed making them handi-cap accessible and the trail at West Side Park will be extended connecting it to Sec-ond Street, as well as bike racks for the school for anyone wishing to pedal to the cam-pus throughout the year. The project is set for the 2012-2015 State transportation Improve-ment Program but the city has yet to receive a project number or funding year. This grant will have a huge impact upon the community, and city officials are excited to

A new Commissioner Podulke joins County Board

During last week’s meeting of the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners, Stephanie Podul-ke was officially sworn in to serve out the final year of the seat rep-resenting district one, which had been vacant after the unexpected passing of Podulke’s late husband, Mike. “I think we all wish the cir-cumstances were different,” said Podulke during a comment period following her swearing in. “With things at the county as hard as they are, I thought that it was important that someone with a little bit of knowledge about the county came forward.” “I’m sort of a lime-green horn,” she said.
After participating in her first meeting as Commissioner, Pod-ulke stated that she would con-tinue to work to ensure corrections and human services in Olmsted County are effective and efficient. She especially will focus on services for children. “We owe our children the best that we can give them,” she said. The new Commissioner Pod-ulke recognizes that these county programs, for which Mike advo-cated for 24 years, are facing new challenges in a tight economy. “It’s a hard time for everybody and the challenge is in treating people humanely while we have less money to spend,” said Pod-ulke.
Other County Business • The County Board accepted a mediation agreement between
Olmsted County and the Olmsted County Law Library in which the County would pay the Law Library $25,000 for each of the next four years. The Law Library will work with Legal Assistance of Olmsted County to improve the Library’s access to citizens. Olmsted County agreed not to cut funding for Legal Assistance under the amount bud-geted for 2011 which is $91,000. • Approved a change order for the contract awarded to Mathio-wetz Construction for concrete surface, shoulder, and culvert, and bridge work done on County Road 10 for an 8 mile stretch north of Dover that was begun last year and completed this summer. The work was projected to cost over $7.1 million, did not include concrete incentives reached and the compa-ny’s discovery of wet and unusable
soil below the surface that needed to be replaced. In total, the project cost more than $860,000 more than the original contract, bringing the total
cost to just over $8 million. • Heard a presentation from Jeff Spartz from the Association of Min-

COMMENTARY
By Jason SethrePublisher of the Olmsted County JournalCell phone: 507-251-5297 As I write this commentary, I must confess that I am a self-proclaimed, wannabe “computer geek.” I hadn’t been called that name in quite some time until I was recently talking with my wife about how I was try-ing to review meta tags within the source code of a website from my Droid phone. She said, “You know you’re really sounding like a computer geek.” I promptly replied, “What do you mean? I thought that was why you married me.” I was pretty sure her reference was a compliment, right? I consider myself pretty versed in computers. After all, I was born and raised in Rochester, a city in which the number of computers surely outnumbers the population 2-to-1. That’s an uneducated guess, but I am probably not too far off in that estimate. Growing up in a city that was blessed with two major employ-ers, Mayo Clinic and IBM, everyone in the neighborhood knew who worked at one of the two biggest employers in town. By Karen Reisner Government dysfunction is root-ed in so-called “safe seats” whether they are in the state legislature or the United States Congress. Safe seats make for hopelessly divided govern-ment. The bickering and partisan-ship in government is one of the big-gest drags on our economy. Dysfunct ion in government breeds uncer-tainty and a loss of confidence. This dysfunc-tion is a large part of the rea-soning used by Standard and Poors when it rapped the knuckles of the United States by lowering the country’s credit rating for the first time in history. After following the mess in St. Paul with the state shut down and a similar but much larger mess in Washington D.C., I have little faith that politicians can throw off their political baggage and make the hard decisions that will be good for our state and country. Politicians need to represent their country first, their party and ideology second and third. Congress takes an oath to represent their constituents, not their party. Moderates that can work across the aisle make divided government work. This makes for the healthi-est government, as it represents the spectrum of views that is America. Let’s face the fact that most of our political representatives lack the courage to prescribe the bad-tasting medicine our country needs to earn the confidence of the American people and the world. When you strip it down it is a simple math problem. The govern-ment simply does not collect enough revenue to fulfill all of its promises. The most balanced approach is to reform programs, like Medicare, and to produce more revenue. The American public simply hasn’t faced the reality of the math, many are somewhat delusional as to what
The Root of the Problem
Karen Reisner
Uncle Sam can do with the revenue he collects. Simple math dictates that we must reform Medicare. The long term structural problems can not be solved with just more effi-ciency. Difficult choices need to be made. The fact is that sacrifices will have to be made, which may include increased Medicare premiums, some kind of increased taxes, and some reduction in services. We as a moral people need to provide for those in need. Excessive military spending also needs to be addressed. The last decade with two very long wars has compounded the country’s debt. Polls show Americans are will-ing to raise more revenue from the rich and willing to cut things like foreign aid. In both cases, the effect on the federal deficit will be very limited and not even begin to solve the long-term structural problems. It would in effect be like paying the minimum on your credit card while continuing to spend out of control. We need to accept the fact that things can not continue as they have. There will have to be some loss of services and some more revenue to service the debt already incurred and to provide for the number of baby boomers now com-ing into retirement. Our elected officials need the acceptance of their constituencies to make the hard choices that need to be made. Republicans passed a Balanced Budget Amendment in the House of Representatives which would put the federal government in a straight jacket and limit its flexibility, which is necessary to deal with unforeseen issues or fluctuations in the strength of the economy. The federal gov-ernment is not a sports car, it is a big semi carrying a heavy load and is not capable of stopping on a dime or making hard fast turns. Nothing adds to the inability of politicians to work together more than “safe seats.” Safe seats allow one party or the other to run their most extreme candidate. There is
no motivation to choose a candidate that can appeal to the middle or even moderates of the other party or of their own party. These extreme candidates give us government dys-function. Abraham Lincoln said, “A house divided against itself can not stand.” Recent polls reveal an 82 per-cent disapproval of Congress, which reflects the fact that our current system allows people to be elected that don’t represent the majority. Some of us go to the polls without the option of voting for someone who represents our views. We then vote for the person who is the more palatable of two poor choices. Most Americans land somewhere in the middle with their beliefs, not on either of the extremes. In May, Governor Mark Day-ton vetoed the bill backed by the Republicans which would redraw the state congressional and legisla-tive districts using the 2010 Census data. A special redistricting panel of judges has been appointed to over-see the drawing of new maps which will be used for the next decade. These maps should be drawn with-out regard to incumbency or lean-ings of the constituents. Late last year The National Com-mission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (Simpson-Bowles) came out with a long range plan to fix the fed-eral government’s fiscal problems. The report was balanced and was intended to be taken in its entirety and without any cherry picking. Cherry picking will weaken the plan. Neither the far right or the far left was pleased with the medicine, which is probably the best indica-tion that it is just the medicine the country needs to improve its fiscal health. With the recent legislation to raise the country’s debt ceiling, a special Super Committee has been formed with three members of each party from the Senate and three members of each party from the House. They have until just before Thanksgiving to come up with an agreement for deficit reduction, and need a simple majority to pass it on to the House
and Senate. This will require at least one member to cross the aisle and vote with the other side. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz recently announced he will boy-cott campaign donations, and urged other business leaders to join the boycott until Washington manages to resolve the long term deficit prob-lem and create jobs. This is a great
idea. If politicians aren’t able to fill their campaign coffers, it will send the message. Schultz believes there is an “irresponsibility among elected officials.” Maybe this irresponsibil-ity is fed by the feeling many elected officials have that their seat is safe. The only possible threat is from their own party if they don’t toe the party line.
Letter about the Whig Party ...To the Editor, For years I have been writing about the need for a third party and for independent candidates. I am one of the original members of the Indepen-dence Party. With the Congress now polling at 13 percent, it seems the majority of you agree. I have encour-aged you to look at the Independence Party for new leadership in our state government. The IP is a state only party and not part of a national party. For those of you who can’t see the IP being your choice, either because it’s a state only party or because of Governor Ventura, I encourage you to look at the fastest growing party in America. The Modern Whig Party is that national centrist party you are looking for. Fiscally conservative, reform the tax code, simplify the government, support our Vets, and no bickering, this is the national party for you! The first territorial Governor of Minnesota, Zachary Taylor, was a
Whig. In 2006, Vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan restarted this national party. They felt that the two major parties were not taking care of their needs and that of their families. This now the fastest growing political party in America attracting moder-ates for both parties and true inde-pendents. This party just organized in Minnesota and is called the Whig Party. If your party has taken a turn to the far right or far left and is no longer a political home for you, look at the Modern Whig party! This is your option nationally to the two major parties that got us into this mess. Visit www.mnwhigs.org or www.modern-whig.com or google Modern Whig Party. It’s time for a true change in government and this national centrist party can give that to you.

school age years lived two doors down from me in Southwest Rochester, and I remember how exciting it was to visit his house and see two computers, an IBM XT and an IBM PC Jr.. We didn’t have a computer at our house, so this was amazing to me; much more exciting than a TV. We played games like Kings Quest, Police Quest, and a wide variety of games that put Atari to shame. I remember when I finally took the leap of faith and bought my first personal computer. It was a 386sx made by Leading Technology. This behemoth sys-tem was the newest thing in our neighborhood, all paid for with my paper route money. My best friend came over to check it out, similar to the way two grown men might moan and groan with excitement over the purchase of a fast and furious brand new sports car. A month later, my best friend had a newer and better computer, and I was left in the dust with my older, slower system. I quickly discovered, at the age of 14, that technology changes so fast that consumers are really purchasing old technology by the time it hits the shelf. Being a geek at heart, I must confess that I have always been enamored by the PC since I first began using DOS commands and eventually Windows. How-

ever, after purchasing the Fill-more County Journal company a few years ago, I had to learn how to use Macs and all of the pro-grams that seem to accompany the Mac world. The reason I loved the PC world was because it was more hands-on. I upgraded and replaced my own memory, hard drives, motherboards, sound cards, video cards, modems, and whatever else needed attention. In the Mac world, everything is self-contained. I had a hard time with this, at first. But, eventually it grew on me, and I am actually typing this commentary piece in Adobe InDesign on a Mac. I guess I go both ways now. What I find most interest-ing with my love affair with PC’s over the years in compari-son with Macs is how I once perceived their business models compared to today. By nature and nurture, a prod-uct of the IBM-dominated world of Rochester, I always felt that the manufacturers of PC’s had it all figured out. Meanwhile, it seemed that Apple, Inc. floundered to grow market share. I felt that Apple, Inc. was too proprietary, even back before I knew what “proprietary” meant. They were very controlling over their hardware and software. On the flipside, in the PC world, “anything goes” seemed to be the loosely knit strategic plan
-- let everyone get in the game. A very inviting free market! There were all types of hard-ware manufacturers and software makers striving for multi-plat-form compatibility with every device driver under the sun. And, that is still the case today. Meanwhile, back at the ranch in the Mac world, I have observed a very controlled environment -- no free for all. What I thought was once the biggest mistake in the computer world for Mac to be so proprie-tary has turned out to be the best move they could have ever made. They have always controlled the quality and brand identity of everything they have touched to the extent that they have tremen-dous brand loyalty. As a matter of fact, I recently heard a joke about Mac users. “How can you tell if someone is a Mac user?” Answer: “They’ll tell you.” And, that is so true. I mean no offense when I say that loyal Mac users carry the same prow-ess about their Apple addiction as do owners of automobiles like Mercedes, Lexus, BMW and Audi. And so, here we are today, looking at the founder of Apple, Inc., stepping down from his seat
as CEO of the company. While I hadn’t necessarily taken an interest in Macs until my mid-30’s, I have gradually gained respect for the decisions that Steve Jobs made that distin-guished his work and leadership from all the others in the PC world. While the PC world market share has become fragmented with too many players, forcing companies like Hewlett-Packard to exit the hardware business and leaving Dell to struggle with falling prices and high warranty costs, Steve Jobs has set the table for Apple, Inc. to dominate the future of a variety of technology-based categories. As Steve Jobs retires at the age of 56 with a net worth of $8.3 billion, recently watching Apple, Inc. achieving a market cap of $337.2 billion, momentarily $6.4 billion above Exxon, I think this company has a bright future. I commend Steve for changing the world in his own way. His livelihood has organically grown into a cult following. I’m not quite there yet, Steve. Sorry, I still consider myself a nuts-and-bolts PC computer geek. But, I can pretend to be an artsy fartsy Apple enthusiast when forced into inescapable social situations.

Dan Brandt isn’t your typical farmer who followed a family tradi-tion of farming. He is a first-gener-ation farmer who started with zero
acres and has grown his operation to 650 acres. Dan values his land and business he has worked hard to build, and he
Olmsted County Farmer spreads the word about R.E.A.L. farming
is concerned about a lot of the mis-conceptions non-farm people have about farming. That is why he has joined a group of Minnesota farmers in the REAL Story campaign hosted by the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council. The REAL Story which stands for Responsible, Ethical, Agriculture for Life, and fea-tures farmers across the state telling their own stories through the REAL story website and social media. Dan began his farming career as a dairy farmer, but today he grows 650 acres of soybeans and corn on his Olmsted County farm, where he resides with his wife, Donna. When asked what responsible, ethical farming for life meant to him, Dan said, “Making sure the herbicides and fertilizers I use to keep my corn and soybeans healthy don’t get into rivers, streams and lakes.” He said it is in farmers’ best inter-ests to take care of the land because the healthier the land and animals are, the better quality and quantity of products farmers can produce. “Con-servation is a big part of that effort,” he said. Dan wishes more non-farm people understood that he and his fellow farmers are doing the best they can to make sure the land and water stays healthy and productive forever. “That’s what good farmers do.” To view videos featuring Dan and other REAL Minnesota farmers, go to www.youtube.com/user/minne-sotasoybean [1]. rocket is an active young dog, and would do best in a more active home. He loves to be outside exploring, going on walks, and seeing what the world has to offer. He would
benefit from frequent exercise and stimulation, so that his energy goes to something productive. He would also benefit
from classes or an experienced owner who already knows what to do. not that he is hard to handle, but an obedient dog is never a bad thing! He has the potential to be a great
family dog, he just needs a little honing.

We all need a little hope sometimes
We all need a little hope some-times. Especially when monthly bills seem to cost more these days, the packaging on the food we buy is getting smaller for the same or higher cost, and the average cost of raising a child to the age of 18 is now around $227,000. Expenses for child care, educa-tion, transportation and health services represent the biggest increases in child-rearing costs—but, hey, who wants to cut corners and start shopping around to find a cheap daycare? Hmmm...that doesn’t even sound good. When my son was around 6-years-old, I remember a shopping day with him when he called me “cheap” because I bought the items that were on sale or the off-brand when possible. His words stung a bit back then, but have since become a characteristic that I am proud to have. When I took on the challenge to try to save money on grocery shopping, I didn’t think I could do much better on my sav-ings because, as my son puts it, I am already “cheap.” BUT…it was a huge surprise to me how much money I could save by simply using coupons. My friendly gro-cer, Tim, in Preston started saving leftover coupons from the papers for me and I was off and running. After watching extreme coupon-ers on TV, I promised myself to buy only those items our family can use---just because it is a good deal does not mean that you have the refrigerator or freezer storage to house it, or the product might expire before we are able to use it. My son even got with the program and spent a night sorting through the coupons and claiming a stash of them---i.e., ice cream, cereal, yogurt, and pizza. When we went shopping, I kept him busy look-ing for his stash of treasured cou-pons, but did refuse to spend over $7.00 on a frozen breakfast prod-uct he liked just because we had a
35 cent coupon---seriously! My words of advice to you…if you are thinking of trying coupon-ing, Go For It! My best savings have been on everyday items such as deodorant, soap, body wash, salad dressing, mayo, seasonings, and much more. Just know that
you will be spending time clip-ping coupons, searching online for store coupons, and matching up your coupons with the sales flyers to save the most money. My inside tip is to check out the website www.krazycouponlady.com, which checks some of the major stores for you and tells you what coupon to use to get the best price. And, even though many people are sold on shopping at the super store for groceries, you will find many great deals when you

I think we need to see a tax reduc-tion in this town.” In other action, the council approved a development agreement with Geotek, LLC that would allo-cate $106,000 of tax increment financing funds for site improve-ments of a water main and reten-tion pond. The council authorized Yaggy Colby Associates to complete a zoning ordinance update and com-plete a commercial drainage study. Two special meetings were set. We need your help...Shingles Study
If you have a NEW case of shingles and live in Dodge, Winona or Olmsted County we want to talk to you!
The Olmsted Medical Center is working with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study shingles (also called herpes zoster). Our study will measure the number of new cases of shingles in 2011 in Olmsted, Winona and Dodge Counties and record information about pain caused by shingles and look for things that bring shingles on.
How can you help? If you develop shingles (we are only studying NEW cases) and do NOT go to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant in your county then we would like to talk to you. Please call us at 507.292.7474 or toll free at 877.959.4999. If you do have shingles and see your doctor but do not receive a letter from us within about 1 week after your visit please call!
This is not a drug study. We will ask you questions over the telephone three times over the next three months. All questions will be about your shingles and your health. You will be given a small payment for your time on each call.

In other action, the council set the fee for by-passing a water meter and tapping directly into city water at $1,000 per occur-rence. There will be an additional $75 reconnection fee. The council approved the shut off of five delinquent utilities cus-tomers per City Ordinance 50.
They also approved a resolution certifying delinquent claims for services rendered by the city to the county auditor against the affected properties. The next Byron City Council meeting will be held on Thurs-day, September 8 at 6 p.m. in City Hall.

We know that sometimes life deals us a bum rap, situations can occur that we have little or no control over
financially. In today’s ever-changing economic cycle, job challenges arise that may have caused financial hardships or unexpected medical emergencies may have dealt an unfair blow. As much as we try, sometimes it is very difficult to rebound from unexpected or out-of-control finances without help or understanding from some outside source. We want that opportunity to help. Re-establishing credit can be as important as buying a car. We have lenders working right now to finalize loans. Let’s see how this program works: From the start, our customers are under no obligation to enter this program, they can say no at any time. This program is designed to re-establish their credit in as short a period of time as possible. Other dealerships offer “Buy Here - Pay Here” operations. Generally, you buy a vehicle they want to get rid of, and no credit is established since they do not report to the credit bureau (unless payments are not made) and there are no warranties or guarantees. If credit is established, it’s only with
them so people are trapped inside their spiral of driving less than desirable vehicles and never improving their credit situation, which is the primary mission in this venture. At Zumbrota Ford, we offer all of our customers the opportunity to drive the vehicle that is right for them. We only use lenders that help re-establish your credit on 1998 and newer models, that meet the conditioning and mileage criteria of the lenders. Many of these vehicles have remaining factory warranties and are eligible for an extended
service contract. After paying on this vehicle, credit will be re-established, provided payments have been maintained current on it and all your other credit obligations. Do you have: 1. A full-time job?
2. $1,300 gross monthly income? 3. Stable residence? 4. Down payment or trade? 5. Past credit problems with a drive to re-establsh credit? If so, we would like the opportunity to help you. Call 1-800-757-3080, ask for Brent or Greg for a completely confidential interview and drive home in your next automobile or truck form Zumbrota Ford tomorrow.

Minnesota employers lost 19,800 jobs in July, largely due to the three-week state gov-ernment shutdown, according to figures released today by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). The state unemployment rate rose 0.4 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted 7.2 percent, compared with the U.S. rate of 9.1 percent. “We’re encouraged by the
gain of 8,200 private-sector jobs in July,” said DEED Commissioner Mark Phillips. “While the numbers are tem-porarily distorted by the state government shutdown, Min-nesota’s job growth contin-ues to improve incrementally and actually shows signs of strength in a number of sec-tors.” Manufacturing led all sec-tors, adding 3,500 jobs. Other gains occurred in profession-
Minnesota unemployment rate rises to 7.2 percent in Julyal and business services (up 3,000), financial activities (up 1,900), education and health services (up 1,300), other ser-vices (up 1,000), trade, trans-portation and utilities (up 200), and logging and mining (up 100). Job losses occurred in July in government (down 28,000), construction (down 2,000), information (down 700), and leisure and hospitality (down 100). Preliminary data as calcu-lated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics during the state gov-ernment shutdown reported a gain of 13,200 jobs during the month of June and another 0.1 percent uptick in unemploy-ment to 6.8 percent. Due to significant revisions, construc-tion employment gained 4,800 jobs in June, so total employ-ment growth now stands at 18,600. By Kevin Blanchard The Stewartville Schools received a $5,000 rebate check from Minne-sota Energy Resources at the school
board meeting Monday, August 22. Rory Lenton, External Relations Manager at Minnesota Energy Resources, and Paul O’Sullivan,
Stewartville Schools receive Energy Efficiency Rebate
Energy Advisor at Franklin Energy, presented the rebate check in recog-nition of the boiler upgrade project that replaced the boiler that was installed in the high school in 1955. “We have hired Franklin Energy to help schools and other organizations on energy efficiency projects,” Len-ton said. “Paul works with customers to identify projects and helps them fill out the required paperwork.” “This project replaced the old boil-er with a high-efficiency condensing boiler,” O’Sullivan said. “Now with the rebate and efficiency savings, you will have more funds to dedicate to educating your students.” According to the updated reports reviewed at the board meeting, there will be more students to educate. The total enrollment for the 2011-12 school year will be 1,917 students. Last year’s enrollment at the end of the school year was 1,870. “It is good to be growing,” Dr. David Thompson, Superintendent of Stewartville Public Schools, said. “This will be the biggest enroll-ment we have had in the last twenty years.”

nesota Counties. Spartz encouraged Commissioners to be involved with the organization and laid out some of the benefits of the organization, including better representation for county issues at the state and federal level. “It’s especially important because what we have seen over the last four or five budget cycles is not an anom-aly,” said Spartz. He pointed out

that as the baby boomer generation retires and receives services, deficits will be created for many years into the future. Spartz endorsed the idea of counties working together to decide what programs can be cut, how revenue can be raised, and how government could be made more efficient by giving counties the authority to respond to local issues without getting special legis-lation at the state level. • Proclaimed August to be child support awareness month.
more commonly known as Lou Geh-rig’s disease, is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system, char-acterized by the death of the motor neurons. This results in a gradual, progressive wasting away of voluntary muscles, often leading to total paraly-sis. The life expectancy of a person diagnosed with ALS is usually three to five years from diagnosis. There is no known cause or cure for ALS, but advances in medical technology are allowing ALS patients to lead more productive lives. In Minnesota alone, there are between 300-400 people liv-ing with ALS. The mission of the ALS Association MN/ND/SD Chapter is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compas-sionate care and support. In the Walk’s ten-year history it has raised over 4.4 million dollars in ten cities (Mankato, Grand Forks, Bismarck, Minot, Fargo/Moorhead, Rochester, Iron Range, St. Cloud, Minneapolis, and Sioux Falls) for local patient services and nationally directed research. This year The ALS Associa-tion is hoping to draw 600 people and raise $52,000 in Rochester alone. To receive additional information, to register a team or individual call the Minnesota/North Dakota/South Dakota Chapter at 888-672-0484, email us at [email protected] or check out our website at www.alsmn.org. Your help is needed in the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease! Sincerely, Kristina Hedberg

Dan BaderConsultant
I know what I want to say about my business, why should I look for assistance when designing an ad? A: Most people have an excellent idea of what they want to show and say in their ads. There have been years of research and results tracking that can help produce the most effective presentation of your message. The who, what, when, where, why are basic to an ad but placement and presentation are key. I have looked at many ads and have been frustrated by not seeing a prominent name or address or phone number or email address. Some ads will spend the majority of space describing how beautiful their location is and then not include a map and directions. People naturally become frustrated when they can’t find the information they want and then they move on. There are some basic proven facts about ads that are universal. The eyes will instinctively move to a full color gloss advertisement. Reticular activators in the brain will quickly focus on an ad that clearly shows desired content. This phenomenon is evident when you are looking for a different model of car. You will notice many more of that model car on the road than ever before. When placing advertising it always best to consult a professional.
How can I make homework go better this year?A: If homework time fills you with dread, consider these homework tips that work double duty: making homework fun while strengthening cognitive abilities like attention, processing speed and memory. 1. Time your child to see how long he can focus on a task, then encourage him to go longer and time again. This works sustained attention and helps kids become independent learners. 2. Give your child two tasks at once. Test him on spelling words while he’s doing a math problem. This grows the divided attention skills that help people multi-task. 3. Let your child play teacher. Teaching a skill will improve his understanding of the concept and build logic and reasoning skills. Using tips like these to strengthen cognitive skills can lead to homework time that’s faster, more productive, and less stressful for all. For the complete list of Homework Tips That Really Work, contact Jen Beyst at [email protected].
There are people out there who have answers!
A: At some point, it may become more difficult for your loved one with Alzheimer’s disease to care for them selves. Do you feel they are experiencing difficulty when walking, using the bathroom, meal preparation, or bathing? Is the person safe or their health threatened while at home? It is not always easy to know when to change the care plan of a loved one. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a range of services to assist you with selecting the best options available in your community. When staying at home is no longer an option, it is important to research what is offered in your area for dementia care settings before it becomes necessary to move the person. Not all care settings are the same. When the time comes to choose a care setting consider the needs of the person, tour the care setting, ask questions you have prepared ahead of time. Keep in mind, depending on your community many care settings have a wait list, so it is important to plan ahead for the transition when it is necessary and an opening is available in the setting of your choice.

When is it time to consider a care setting for dementia? A: The answer is no! We actually need GOOD fats for the
following reasons: Fats make up cell walls, help prevent ADD, ADHD, MS, mood swings, inflammation, and fatigue, keep the brain, heart and immune system healthy, keep blood sugar regulation normal and help with weight control! Good sources of fats are from foods like fish, salmon, flax seed, extra virgin olive oil, avocados, raw nuts and seeds, unrefined virgin coconut oil, grass fed beef and lamb, and free range poultry and eggs. Bad fats are the “trans fats” we WANT to AVOID which are listed as “hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats” on labels. This includes vegetable oils, margarine, processed and fried foods. They are even in some peanut butters and ice cream! So check your labels! These “trans fats” raise your LDL and lower your HDL cholesterol, they weaken your cell walls, increase pain and inflammation and cause muscle fatigue, congest the lymph glands and liver, clog the gall bladder, interfere with gestation in women, decrease testosterone in men, contribute to coronary heart disease and cancer, cause weight gain, and make the cells less resistant to bacteria and viruses.

Dr. Thompson reported that enrollment has been closed for kin-dergarten. “Bonner will be fullest,” Bonner Elementary Principal Dave Nystuem said. “We have had more than 340 stu-dents open enroll this year,” Thomp-son said. “Most of these students are coming from Rochester and Spring Valley.” “In fact, I received a call from a mother who was asking that her children be put on the kindergarten list,” Thompson said. “She said her children were three and four years old, she just wanted to make sure that they could get into our district.” “I told her that we don’t have that kind of list,” he said. “It is nice to know that people want to have their kids educated here.” In other action, the board approved three focus areas for the Superinten-dent: lead and facilitate an express version of the Baldridge continuous improvement process; perform twen-ty-one teacher evaluations on new teachers in the district; and support the successful implementation of the One-to-one laptop project. “According to Dr. Thompson’s contract, there is a $5,000 pay for performance bonus based on the achievement of these goals,” Board Chair Mark Vaupel said. The board
approved a bonus of $2,000 for the first two focus areas and $1,000 for the third.
The next board meeting will be Monday, September 12 at 7 p.m. in the board room.
