One of the most interesting places in the Warmia and Mazury region is Wilczy Szaniec (Wolfsschanze) in Gierłoż near Kętrzyn. Wilczy Szaniec is the headquarters of Adolf Hitler. There are many ruins of bunkers and other buildings.
Adolf Hitler
HistoryHitler came to Wilczy Szaniec with his entourage on 24 June, 1941. He spent here over 800 days. The life of the people in the headquarters focused on Hitler. In 1944 over two thousand people lived here, but only 20 women (Ewa Braun, Hitler’s wife, never came to Wilczy Szaniec)
In 20 July of the 1944 was an attempted on Hitler. He called a council of war. General Hausinger planted a bomb under a massive table. Three officers and the stenographer died. Hitler thought it was a miracle that he survived.
