FROM OUR BISHOPDear Friends in Christ, Year after year, the world seesthe violence in the Middle East and how Christians arebeing forced to flee this area that is so sacred to ourfaith. It is a tragedy happening right before our eyes.
Because of this, the annual collection for the Holy Land takes oneven greater significance, and so I ask for your support when itis taken on Good Friday. This special collection helps make itpossible for Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including poorand young couples, by building affordable apartments andsupporting schools. It offers medical and social assistance, family counseling, youth centers and employment opportunitiesto many seeking work. it gives them hope at a time when allseems hopeless. The collection also funds the work of theFranciscans who have been entrusted for the last 800 yrs withthe care of Holy Land sites. This is a great blessing to Christianswho lives there and for the countless pilgrims who visit eachyear. Last year alone, capital repairs and improvements weremade to sacred sites in Jerusalem, Nazareth and Mt. Tabor, thanks to our participation in the Holy Land collection. This is animportant way for us Catholics to support the place where ourfaith was born. I ask you to be as generous as possible whenthe Collection for the Holy Land is taken up this Good Friday.
Faithfully yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D.Bishop of Paterson

LITURGY CORNERThis is the week Christians around the world callHoly. It begins with joyously shouted “Hosannas” ofthe Jews and ends with the peace filled “He has
been raised” of the angel. Between Palm Sunday and EasterSunday we celebrate in word and sign the central mysteries ofour Faith. On Thursday we recall the gifts of Holy Eucharist andHoly Orders given to the Church for its nourishment andgrowth. The beautiful scene of Christ washing His Apostles feetat the Last Supper is re-enacted. We are reminded of thatmysterious anomaly of our Christian living: “Whoever wishes tobe the greatest among you must learn to serve the others.”Friday we recall the painful death of Our Savior on the cross. So many scenes for our reflection are presented in the readingof the Passion. Just before bowing His head in death Heconfidently called out to His Father: “Into your hands Icommend my spirit.” Each day we are called to entrustourselves into the caring hands of God. At the Easter Vigil onSaturday evening, we begin the celebration of Christ’sresurrection from the dead. Through word and sign, throughfire, darkness, light and water we recall the history of oursalvation now complete in this day’s feast. The “He has beenraised” of the angel is now the “You will be raised” of Christ. Iinvite all of you to enter into the “holiest of weeks” by joining usas a parish family at our celebrations. Search for the one thingin your life that will lead you home to the Father’s Love withoutany detours. That path is not always clear and well lit, but withthe help of God you can find it and reach the victory. Find theway to heal and feel the Father’s love in all you do. Have amost blessed Holy Week ! Lisa
FAITH AT HOMEWhat are you doing for Holy Week this year? It’s OKif your list includes coloring eggs, photos with theEaster Bunny, etc. There’s nothing wrong with secular
Easter activities, but it’s important to remember that there isalso a profound spiritual basis for the holiday celebration. Ourremembrance of the death and resurrection of Jesus makes HolyWeek the most sacred time of the year for Catholics. CelebratePalm Sunday by making crosses out of palms. Before coloringEaster Eggs, let children write messages on the eggs to celebratethe true meaning of Easter, like “Christ is Risen”, “Alleluia”,“Jesus loves us”. Emphasize the importance of service on HolyThursday by helping someone in need. When you help yourfamily experience the spiritual significance of Holy Week, yourEaster celebration will be a day of great joy! Enjoy your week!
