connective tissues of varying
thickness and density
It attaches the mucous
membrane to the underlying
structures
Nature of attachment (Loose or
firm) depends on the character of
the submucosa

arteries in submucosa & enters Lamina
propria
In Lamina propria they again divide into sub epithelial capillary network

at the anterior region of the oral cavity
The nerves are myelinated when
they enter submucosa but
lose their myelin sheath before splitting in to
their end arborization

bulbs• Touch; Meissner’s
corpuscle • Pain; Free nerve
