Office of the Supreme President
May 2008 Dear AHEPA Family members, We are rapidly approaching the time when our districts gather throughout the AHEPA family domain to deliberate for the Good of the Order. On behalf of the Supreme Lodge, it has been a pleasure and honor to serve at this high level of administration and to represent our beloved Order across the globe. We trust everyone had a successful and a productive year of events. This year, my travels took me to numerous districts where I witnessed many worthy chapter and district projects that promoted the mission of AHEPA. The caravan which was designed to reach out contact as many chapters and members really worked! From senior housing dedications to the tens of thousands of dollars donated to charitable causes, I wish all of these projects continued success as they all help us promote our good name throughout the community. Without a doubt, our chapters and districts are the backbone of our great organization. The amount of time, energy, and resources dedicated by AHEPA Family members at the grassroots level never ceases to amaze me. We’ve seen AHEPA grow in many capacities during the past year. We’ve expanded with new chapters in our nation’s Heartland and overseas. We are working diligently to bring inactive members back into our fold. AHEPA continues to grow its relations with important entities such as the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Embassies of Greece and Republic of Cyprus, and of course, with our own Government. This year we were immediately challenged with raising funds and awareness for the Greek Fires, which devastated parts of Greece. The AHEPA was first to respond. With the aid of our chapters and some motivated brothers, we sent 5 tons of goods to Greece and raised close to $300,000 in donations in 2 short months. Our total effort exceeded $500,000, a tremendous feat, and it is all because of you! The AHEPA family’s generosity toward medical research continues as our Cooley’s Anemia Foundation and Bone Marrow programs continue to raise funds for research and assist those in need of medical attention. The AHEPA National Housing Program and the Athletic programs also continue to thrive with Housing reaching over 77 projects in operation or in development, and Athletics proceeding with its large number of athletic tournaments. Our National Educational Foundation continues to provide deserving students with the financial assistance needed to pursue their academic dreams. In the last academic year, the Foundation awarded $101,500 in scholarships. All told, the AHEPA family unequivocally awards a half-million dollars to scholars at the chapter, district, and national levels annually. In conclusion, I wish you harmonious and productive deliberations in the spirit of Brotherhood and Sisterhood. I wish to thank everyone for their hospitality and to the courtesies extended to my family during my travels. I look forward to seeing everyone at our 86th Annual Supreme Convention in Athens, Greece July 1 – 11, 2008. Fraternally,
Ike Gulas Supreme President

May/June 2008 Dear AHEPA Family and Friends, On behalf of the Daughters of Penelope, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 77th Annual El Camino Real District #20 Convention. The San Bernardino, California AHEPA Family has worked diligently to plan a full and interesting agenda so that you may all enjoy the exchange of ideas at the meetings as well as the fellowship at the various social activities. The Daughters of Penelope have been busy this year, as well. We launched an extensive campaign to raise money for the victims of the devastating fires in Greece, and have, to date, raised over $28,000 in support of this worthy cause. This was truly an impressive outpouring of aid from across the country and we thank you all for your support. In March we celebrated the AHEPA Biennial Banquet and the Daughters of Penelope Salute to Women Reception in Washington, DC. We were pleased to welcome our honoree of this year’s Salute to Women, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus. It was a pleasure for all of us to meet this warm, gracious, and truly dynamic woman. Our Salute to Women is one of the outstanding events that we sponsor, and brings honor and international recognition to the Daughters of Penelope as well as to our remarkable recipient. This year, we have chosen to strengthen our position on Civic Responsibility by working to spread the history and mission of our organization to the halls of Congress. To increase our congressional outreach, we held our first Capitol Hill Day this past March, in conjunction with the Biennial Banquet/Salute weekend. This gathering educated our members regarding current thought in Congress in areas of concern to us, and then empowered our members to carry the message of the Daughters of Penelope to the offices of their individual Representatives and Senators. . All of these above activities are in addition to our ongoing philanthropic projects: Penelope House, UM/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, AHEPA Cooley’s Anemia and the AHEPA Bone Marrow Foundations, as well as our Daughters of Penelope Foundation, with its’ continuing strides toward excellence in education. These activities and worthy causes combine to form the Daughters of Penelope into the organization we are proud of and love. I wish you successful and meaningful deliberations leading to the strengthening and improvement of our beloved organization. In your hands, you hold the key to our continuing growth and prosperity. Your decisions today must direct us toward a strong and united future. I know that you will act wisely for the Good of the Order. With love and respect in ΘΠ, Karen Stamatiades Grand President Daughters of Penelope

Mr. George S. Dafnis
Mr. George S. Dafnis was born in Greece on March 23, 1930 on the Island of Evia, in the Aegean Sea. Until the age of 21 he worked on the family farm. On December 31, 1951, he left Greece to come to America. His journey was sponsored by AHEPA and resulted in his going to Hartford, Conn., where he washed dishes in a restaurant. After only a month he relocated to Fontana, California, where he worked at Kaiser Steel until he retired after 30 years. The main focus of George’s adult life has centered around three themes: the church, his family and AHEPA. Since 1952 he has been a member of Prophet Elias Church in San Bernardino, where he has served the community in a variety of capacities. For a number of years he has served on the Parish Council, been a fill-in cantor, and is a constant attendee. Presently he serves as one of three members of Prophet Elias designated as an associate Parish Council member to help the Parish Council and the Priest in and around the Church. George is ever present in all the activities of his Church. In 1957 he married Sofia Economy and together are the proud parents of two children, Nikki and Steve. Steve and his wife Pam have two children that George and Sophia adore and love very much. George and Sofia are pillars of Prophet Elias and ideal role models for their family and the Greek Orthodox Community at large. Both are known as members with deep religious faith, hard workers, and lifetime supporters of the Greek Orthodox Church. Being faithful to his family in Greece, George brought his four brothers and a sister from Greece to settle in California. In 1954 George joined the Arrowhead Chapter of AHEPA and is a life member. He has served in all the posts in the Arrowhead Chapter and as President for the past 20 years. As Chapter President, George personally calls on members to collect their annual dues, always carries an AHEPA application form for signing up new members, and is credited with keeping the Chapter’s membership consistently strong. Because of George’s persistent efforts, the Arrowhead Chapter had endured to the point that it actively sought and received funding from HUD to build 90 Senior Housing Units in San Bernardino. Over the past five years he has been a leader and persistent supporter of the AHEPA 302 Senior Housing Project, serving as Vice-President of its Board. George is known throughout the community and the District as a true AHEPAN who has attended most, if not all District and National Conventions. He is recognized for his honesty, diligence, determination and profound sense of gratitude toward God and the country that has given him so much. George is the first AHEPAN to be honored with both awards. We are proud to honor George S. Dafnis as the recipient of the Periclean Award and the District 20 Lifetime Achievement Award. AXIOS!
Chapter History Arrowhead Chapter No. 302 — Amphitrite Chapter No. 151
San Bernardino, California
In the latter part of 1934, members of the San Bernardino-Riverside Greek Community conceived the idea of
establishing a local Chapter of AHEPA. In January 1935 the Arrowhead Chapter was established and on February 29th
the Chapter’s first officers were elected and installed in public ceremonies. Following the installation of officers, an
elaborate celebration was held at Urbita Springs Park which was attended by more than 700 people to greet the Arrow-
head Chapter’s debut in the social and fraternal life of the communities which it proposed to serve. The first year the
membership grew to 70 members.
The early years saw the Chapter take steps to establish courses in the Greek language in the public schools,
which were open to anyone desiring to learn the Greek language, and the Chapter’s support for AHEPA’s Sanatorium
for tuberculosis in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which opened on March 25, 1936. In June 1937, the Chapter sponsored
its first District 20 Convention.
In the 40’s, the Arrowhead Chapter participated in the sale of U.S. War Bonds and raised money that was con-
tributed to the building of the AHEPA Wing of the Evangelismos Hospital and AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki,
Greece. In 1947, the Amphitrite Chapter of the Daughter of Penelope was established as the women’s auxiliary of the
Arrowhead Chapter. Together, under the auspices of AHEPA, the two Chapters have since grown to be an established
philanthropic and charitable organization in the Inland Empire. In the late 40’s, the Chapters became the driving force
for the establishment and purchase of the lands for St. Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church in San Bernardino, CA.
The 50’s and 60’s saw the Chapters participate in raising funds to build AHEPA Hall for Boys, AHEPA School
Building, and St. Basil’s Academy. AHEPA was a driving force in raising funds and building the St. Prophet Elias
Church Hall in 1958 and the present St. Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church in 1964.
In the 70’s the Chapters were active in the AHEPA Athletic Program and the establishment of the AHEPA Edu-
cational Foundation, raising funds for scholarship awards. In the 80’s money was raised to fund the Statute of Liberty/
Ellis Island Restoration Project. In the 90’s, money was raised for the Olympic Sculpture in Atlantic’s Centennial Park
and the AHEPA bone marrow transplant project.
The Chapters hold regular fundraising activities, which include sponsoring luncheons, dinner-dances, and chari-
table golf and bowling tournaments. Regular contributions are made to the Cyprus Children’s Fund, Special Olympics,
Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, AHEPA Hellenic Heritage Foundation, Penelope House Family Violence Center, Syl-
vester Cancer Center at the University of Miami, LAM (Lymphangioleiomyomatosis) Foundation, Guiding Eyes Pro-
gram, and St Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church. Regular support is also made to AHEPA’s National and District
20 scholarship funds and scholarships are annually awarded directly by the Chapter to local graduating high school stu-
dents.
Through special projects the Chapter has raised many thousands of dollars which have been donated to support
Cystic Fibrosis, Bethlehem House for abused women and children, Kalamata earthquake victims, Armenian earthquake
victims, Turkish earthquake victims, Toys for Tots, Meals-on-Wheels, and numerous individuals on an as needed basis.
In 2001, the Chapter sponsored seven $25 awards to high school finalists who participated in writing a preamble for the
City of San Bernardino Charter. Chapter members on a regular basis volunteer to feed the homeless at Mary’s Table,
assist with Wheels-on-Wheels, and Blood Bank and Bone Marrow Registry. The Chapter has supported and partici-
pated in building AHEPA Rose Parade floats.
The contributions of individual Chapter members are recognized by the naming of the Coussoulis Arena, at
California State University San Bernardino, in honor of AHEPA family members James and Aerianthe Coussoulis, and
the establishment of an AHEPA National Scholarship funded by one of the Chapter members.

ORDER OF AHEPA SANTA BARBARA CHAPTER #243
Established October 17, 1929 “Promoting the Harmony of Greek Culture, Service, and Community”
“Keeping the Spirit Alive” www.ahepa20.org/~chapter243/
“Let’s Do Something Great in 2008” The twenty-eight members of this energetic chapter congratulate the Officers of District 20 for their two years of dedicated effort to create an improved system of communication, support, and long range goals for District 20 and its membership. Santa Barbara Chapter #243 expresses its Thanks and Appreciation for the support and guidance graciously afforded to us by the District Officers during their term of office and loudly declare — ”Job Well Done.” We also express our appreciation to Ahepa Chapter #302 and Daughters Chapter #151 for hosting the 77th Annual El Camino Real District 20 Ahepa Family Convention. We are aware of the magnitude of this undertaking and we commend you for your efforts. Our Santa Barbara Ahepa Chapter #243 and our Parish Community of Saint Barbara and Rev. Fr. Simon Thomas invite you to join us in the foothills of Santa Ynez Mountains and enjoy the cool breezes from the Gold Coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. Come and enjoy our local events: The Santa Barbara Greek Festival, chaired by PDG Gus Frangos, and listed by our Chamber of Commerce as a highlighted event — held this year on July 26th and 27th, 2008. Our Chapter #243 Birthday Party is on Sunday, October 19th, and our annual Ahepa Greek Glendi will be held on Saturday, November 1st. We know you will have an enjoyable time at these events. We look forward to seeing you. The members of Santa Barbara Ahepa Chapter #243.
