Motivation for OSH&E at academia and workplace
• OSH and Environment is an integral part of the expanded or larger domain of the environment:-
• Stricter laws and regulations have evolved over time in the U.S. and across the
world – as a result of the tragedies at the workplace • local laws, national or state and federal and even international laws -
identify some of these laws – voluntary and non-voluntary • Specific product environmental and safety regulations
• People are more aware and conscious about OSHE aspects of workplace activities
![Page 8: OSHE 111 Lecture # 1 An Introduction to Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) Presented by Dr. Ephraim Massawe](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022072006/56649f525503460f94c76ca8/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
• Injuries and fatalities • Damage losses and reimbursement • Effect on the national economy (macro-economics) – billions dollars per
year and effects on the person or individuals (micro-economics)• Stricter laws, rules, regulations are evolving on a daily basis • OSHA, workman’s compensation, legal issues, liability, etc. • The interactions among worker, machine, and environment is complex • Understanding potential risks/hazards assessment

What do OSHE professionals do? What is involved?
• Understanding the engineering principles of processes & system • Risk avoidance and prevention
• Accident investigation• Accident/incident prevention through designs; controls and other
methods
