Outline
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common
joint disease in the world.
OA causes pathologic alterations in
articular tissues resultingin pain and
disability
What is osteoarthritis
Joints connect two or more bones to
each other.
Classification by structure and
funcktion
How does the joint works normally
Three structural types of joints
Fibrous joint Cartilaginous joint Synovial joint
Three functional types of joints Ampiarthrosis Synarthrosis Diarthrosis
How does the joint works normally
Synovial joints are highly mobile in comparison with other types of joints. Structure of synovial joint: Articular capsule Synovial membrane Articular cavity Articular cartilage
How does the joint works normally
During exercise will the articular cartilage be
compressed and synovial fluid works as a
friction adjuster.
How does the joint works normally
OA causes:
Pain Stiffnes Lameness
Cold weather is increasing pain and stiffness.
Sometimes joint may fill up with fluid which increase stiffness
Signs and symptoms
Diagnosting osteoarthritis
In OA the articular cartilage is
damaged. When articular cartage
gets damaged it does not heal
anymore. It can be damaged in
several different ways but the most
common ways are; overwork,
overweight, inflammation and lack of
moving
X-ray has been for a long time golden
standard for diagnosis. As far as X-ray is
not able to note early stages of OA,
science has tried to find new ways to
diagnose OA.
Diagnosting osteoarthritis
One of the new diagnoses is made by
searching synovial fluid markers from
blood and urea. This diagnose way allows
to note OA much earlier than X-ray, which
is important to get best results in
treatment.
Diagnosting osteoarthritis
OA is lifelong disease. There are only
few options to get rid of it; joint
prosthesis and other surgical methods.
After OA diagnoses only what can be
done is a pain relief and an attempt to
reduce cartilage destruction
Treating osteoarthritis
How to prevent OA?
Physical training
Warm-up
A healthy diet
Avoidance of overweight
Treating osteoarthritis

Derek B. Fox, DVM, and James L. Cook, DVM, PhD, DACVS Effect of the use of carprofen in dogs undergoing
intense rehabilitation after lateral fabellar suture stabilization; Wanda J. Gordon-Evans, DVM, PhD; Diane Dunning, DVM, MS, DACVS; Ann L. Johnson, DVM, MS, DACVS; Kim E. Knap, BS
