You're not a kid anymore when:
- You enjoy watching the news. - You can live without sex but not without your glasses. - You quit trying to hold in your stomach, no matter who walks into the room. - The phone rings and you hope it's NOT for you. - Your best friend is dating someone half their age AND isn't breaking any laws. - You start singing along with the elevator music. - You really do want a new washing machine for your birthday. - The only reason you're still awake at 4:00 am is indigestion. - People ask what color your hair USED to be. - You're proud of your lawnmower! - You point out what buildings used to be where. - You routinely check the oil in your car. - You've owned clothes so long that they've come back into style, TWICE. - You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge. - You consider coffee one of the most important things in life. - 8:00 AM is your idea of "sleeping in". - Neighbors borrow your tools. - Others ask for your
recipes. - You paint walls for a reason other than getting your deposit back. - You can't remember the last time you lay on the floor to watch television. - You wear socks with sandals.
Things women want to hear, but
never do 1. Wow, I just don't know what to do with this money we won in the lottery, so why don't you take it to the mall and see if you can find something to buy with it. 2. Hey, how about inviting your mother to spend the summer with us. 3. Oh, go ahead and eat that third piece of chocolate cream pie. If it's one thing I hate it's skinny women. 4. What luck, they had a special rental rate at the video store on romance movies. 5. You know, that Pam Anderson just doesn't seem to have the brain power that I find so attractive in a woman. 6. What a break, I won a prize on the radio station... tickets to either the super bowl or the opening of the New York Ballet. I got first choice so pack your bags for New York, we get to go to the ballet!!! 7. Who wants to play golf when I can get to see how
good the lawn looks when it's freshly mowed. 8. Shoot, there's nothing on TV but football games. Let's go furniture shopping. 9. Man I tell you, nothing feels better than getting all spruced up in a suit and tie. 10. I'm getting a little tired of steak on the grill. How about a nice quiche? 11. You know, I think I'd really prefer the four-door sedan to that impractical Corvette. 12. Golly I think we're lost. Let me find a gas station to ask for directions. 13. My golf clubs are only 30 years old. Why don't you use the money my parents gave us to get something
nice for the house. 14. If the guys call and want me to go to that new sports club with them, tell them I'm busy. I really want to get the living room painted tonight. 15. Sports cars are just such stupid little toys for men
who have never really grown up. 16. If you're looking for me later, I'll be over there l o o k i n g a t t h e h o m e decorating magazines. 17. You know, we really
don't visit your relatives enough. 18. Why don't you relax this weekend. I'll take care o f t h e c o o k i n g a n d housework.

The number of rigs searching for oil and natural gas increased by one in Oklahoma this week while the national rig count was unchanged.Oklahoma's count increased to 140, up from 131 one year ago. The Cana Woodford Basin, home to the STACK and SCOOP plays, slipped by three to 65 and remained the country's third most active field behind the Permian with 486 and the Eagle Ford with 79.Nationwide, the rig count was unchanged at 1,057, up from 946 one year ago. The count includes 869 rigs searching for oil, 186 drilling for natural gas a n d t w o l i s t e d a s "miscellaneous."Medical groups to join forces
HPI Holdings LLC, Integris and Uni ted Surg ica l Par tners International have agreed to form a joint venture to improve access to medical care in Oklahoma City, the companies said Friday. The joint venture establishes an affiliation of more than 1,300 physicians, representing a wide variety of specialties with prac t ices throughout the Oklahoma City metro area. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.“It is more important than ever t h a t h e a l t h c a r e l e a d e r s continue to find ways to offer high quality care in affordable settings,” HPI CEO Ed Gray said. “ We ' v e b e e n s u c c e s s f u l developers and service
p r o v i d e r s i n s t a n d - a l o n e settings, and we're pleased to continue development in that space while also establishing stronger connectivity to
I n t e g r i s , w h i c h o f f e r s O k l a h o m a ' s m o s t comprehensive level of services from primary care to transplant and everything in between.”
Drilling activity grows outside of state's core fieldsWOODWARD — Oil production continues to expand throughout much of Oklahoma, including in areas outside of the state's core STACK and SCOOP fields.Those two fields are dominated by larger, independent oil c o m p a n i e s , i n c l u d i n g Continental Resources Inc., D e v o n E n e r g y C o r p . a n d Newfield Exploration.But smaller, privately held companies are reporting strong results in other parts of the state, including the Merge — which lies between the STACK and SCOOP — the western Anadarko
Basin in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, the NW STACK — which, as its name implies, is northwest of the STACK — and in southeast Oklahoma's Arkoma Basin, parts of which now are being called the Arkoma Stack.Oklahoma's modern horizontal oil developments are newer and core developments less spread out than in the vast Permian Basin of west Texas and southeast New Mexico, but operators in Oklahoma tout several unique benefits to the state's resources."Oklahoma is unique in how
many stack interval plays are available. There are 14 different commercia l targets in the Anadarko Basin," Rome Nichols, p r o d u c t i o n m a n a g e r f o r Oklahoma City-based LeNorman Operating, said at the Tri-State Oil and Gas Convention in Woodward last week.LeNorman started operating in western Oklahoma in 2011 and expanded through severa l purchases. The company is operating two rigs in the area.Oklahoma's oil fields also have
the benefit of being near plenty of pipelines, storage facilities, processing plants and refineries.Sales prices have fallen in some parts of the Permian Basin because pipeline and other midstream infrastructure is at or near capacity. Projects planned or under construction promise to relieve the bottleneck, but the problem is likely to continue at least until late next year.

Easy Tips to Help Avoid SalmonellaLabor Day is quickly approaching and most people enjoy entertaining and cooking for a crowd. However, there’s one guest you certainly do not want on the invitation list – salmonella.Barbara Brown, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension food specialist, said salmonella is common and can be found in many types of foods.Salmonella can be found in raw or undercooked eggs, poultry and meat, as well as raw or unpasteurized milk and other dairy products. It’s also found in raw produce. Fortunately, prevention is fairly easy.First, cook all foods to a safe internal temperature. Use a meat thermometer to help ensure foods get to the proper temperature. Poultry should be cooked to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.Buy and consume only pasteurized milk and dairy products. And finally, thoroughly rinse all fresh raw fruits and vegetables before eating.Wash your hands before beginning any meal preparations. Wash kitchen work surfaces and utensils with hot, soapy water immediately after they have been in contact with raw meat or poultry.Soap is just as essential in your kitchen as your cooking pans and spatulas. It’s a good idea to have separate cutting boards for fruits and vegetables and meat and poultry. And, speaking of poultry, don’t rinse raw poultry. This spreads germs around the kitchen and isn’t a food safety step.It is important to recognize the symptoms of salmonella. Symptoms include abdominal cramps and tenderness, fever and diarrhea. Keep in mind these symptoms do not show up immediately. A child may show these symptoms of gastroenteritis in a range of 12 to 72 hours. While you need to be careful with food preparation for everyone in your household, be especially vigilant when preparing food for younger children. Children under the age of 4 are 4.5 times more likely to acquire bacterial infections from food compared to adults. Taking the time to follow these guidelines will help ensure everyone stays healthy. All Oklahoma State University Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources content is available at www.dasnr.okstate.edu/news.Submitted by: Rachel Lockwood

SUMMER MASTITISSummer mastitis is a term for the type of mastitis which tends to occur during the warmer months in dry cows and heifers at pasture. It differs from other types of mastitis in several ways, and i s c l a s s e d n e i t h e r a s c o n t a g i o u s n o r environmental in its origin. It is often called 'August bag'.Its spread is linked to flying insects, specifically the sheep headfly (Hydrotaea irritans). Summer mastitis is caused by a number of bacterial varieties, most n o t a b l y S t r e p t o c o c c u s d y s g a l a c t a e a n d Arcanobacterium pyogenes. The exact means of infection is not entirely understood, as experimental infection via the sheep headfly has proved inconclusive. The actual means of infection is likely to be more complex, with a mixture of routes, and other anaerobic bacteria such as
Peptococcus indolicus are implicated in this.In addition to potential external routes of infection via teat skin or teat canal, particularly if damaged, there is the possibility of infection originating internally, with bacteria spreading from other parts of the body, particularly via the blood. Once a quarter is affected then spread can then occur via infected material between quarters or even between animals.SYMPTOMSIni t ia l symptoms are a swollen, painful teat or quarter, and can be easily i d e n t i f i e d b y c a r e f u l observation, particularly when flies become attracted to the teat's unpleasant-smelling yellow secretions, w h i c h a s t h e d i s e a s e progresses will become worse. If left untreated, the bacterial toxins will damage t h e u d d e r t i s s u e s irreversibly; in many cases the quarter affected will be lost entirely or so badly affected by the infection that it will be effectively lost. Further signs as the illness
becomes sys temic a re swelling of the hind legs, o b v i o u s l e t h a r g y a n d separation from the herd, abortion and even death.T R E A T M E N T A N D CONTROLTreatment is most often via r e g u l a r a n d r e p e a t e d stripping of the affected quarter, to remove as much affected material as possible, followed by intra-mammary antibiotics and an antibiotic injection to counter the systemic effects of bacterial toxins. Heifers and cows with summer mastitis are best isolated to prevent the spread of the illness.Summer mastitis can be avoided by various measures:Having effective dry cow therapy, including the use of long-term intra-mammary antibiotics, teat end sealants and good hygiene measures a t d r y ing - o f f . In some c i r c u m s t a n c e s , i n t r a -mammary antibiotics may require re-administration dur ing the dry per iod , although care should be taken with milk withdrawal periods.Implementing measures to c o n t r o l a n d m i n i m i s e exposure to flies. Flying I
nsects should be controlled from early on in the fly season by the use of pour-on anti-parasitic treatments, the use of fly ear tags, and the app l i ca t ion o f t ea t f l y repellents to teats, such as traditional Stockholm tar and brown salves.
M a i n t a i n i n g g o o d t e a t condition pre-drying off, h a v i n g g o o d d r y c o w n u t r i t i o n a n d observing/checking cattle on a regular basis.
Avoiding areas where teats may be damaged or areas where flies are a particular problem, such as near rivers and woods.

WHY DON’T WE FOCUS ON REAL THINGS FROM NOW ON?Did you see that the circus animals on the box of Barnum Animal Crackers have broken f ree f rom thei r cages? Product packaging redesign usually doesn’t make the news. But this little box with the string handle has had pretty much the same look since 1902. It’s been a piece of our American heritage for over one hundred years! Why the change? Of course it was pressure from a vocal, demanding social justice group.PETA (people for the ethical
treatment of animals) started shouting demands regarding the depiction of animals in cages. Ironically, PETA has been called into question many times over the past d e c a d e f o r t h e i r euthanization of thousands of animals – who live in cages - that other animal rights groups said were adoptable. So they have opted to ignore the real animals they mistreat to focus on fake, cardboard animals. Got it.This reminds me of the time my 5th grader was supposed to make a poster depicting the 2nd Amendment. Except they were sent home with instructions declaring that
any depiction of a firearm would be prohibited. Say what?I sent an exploratory email to t h e p r i n c i p a l a n d h i s response revealed that many kids would draw pictures of “bare arms”. Um yeah - that has nothing to do with gun r i g h t s o r t h e s e c o n d amendment. But by all means, let’s teach our 10 year-olds that this part of our constitution is referring to big biceps. Good grief. So now drawings of animals are so important to PETA that they bully a company into changing their branding for the first time ever. I actually like the looks of the new box. I love animals and they look prettier in this new format. But come on - being bothered enough about this to march, rally, write letters or whatever is just goofy.I am more amazed every day at the things that gain traction among the easily offended. But worse than being offended, are the people who actively seek a situation to manipulate. How about the baker in Lakewood, Colorado who didn’t want to bake a cake for a gay wedding? The United States Supreme Court sided with him after a lengthy legal process. The frosting wasn’t even dry on his next project when a Denver transgender attorney (how convenient) wandered into his shop asking for a cake to celebrate his/her transition. So right down the legal rabbit hole we go again. Why on earth would this person choose tha t bakery in Lakewood, which is west of Denver? There are more than
30 bakeries in Lakewood. And in the city where this lawyer resides, I stopped counting at 144. I don’t think anyone is buying that she just had to have a cake from Masterpiece Bakery. It’s all about driving him out of business and she’s the second person to give it a try. Across our country, rather than embracing live and let l i ve , some peop le a r e demanding that they just get t h e i r w a y. N o t a b o u t important things from our past like civil rights, voting rights or access to education, but for things like how an animal is depicted on a box; or by trying to force a religiously devout person to abandon their beliefs for a stupid cake; or by asking public school students to i g n o r e w h a t t h e 2 n d amendment is really about. In the principal’s email response he went on to say that they chose to exclude pictures or drawings of guns because they could be frightening to some children or cause anxiety for people viewing the posters. My response was, “You do realize that drawings and pic tures o f guns can’ t actually shoot, right?”In the end, my daughter drew a big black rifle right in the middle of her poster board and proudly wrote that the 2nd Amendment guarantees our rights to “ b e a r a r m s . ” To m y knowledge, not one person was shot or even frightened. America wins again.

With summer break coming to an end, children are headed back to school. The Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office has some important school zone safety tips to help keep you and your children safe this school year.•Familiarize yourself with school or provider drop-off and pick-up practices and then be sure you always follow them. One of the biggest complaints by school officials is that parents find a reason to be an exception to the rule. If the curb says "No stopping, standing or parking at any time," that means for everyone. If children are required to use designated cross walks, don't walk your
child across the middle of a street just because you're holding his/her hand. If traffic is supposed to be one way at d e s i g n a t e d t i m e s , b e prepared to change your traffic pattern. And, if an area is designated for teacher parking only, then don't grab a space to drop off your child because you think it's just for "a couple of minutes." Do not use handicap parking to pull up and let your child out unless your child is handicap or you are, and you are going into the school.•Discuss the rules with your chi ld and pract ice with younger ones. If possible, take your child to the drop-off area and "practice" the procedure at an off-peak time. Have your child wear his backpack (if required) and walk him through what to look for, what to do, and what not to do. If crossing guards are utilized, explain their purpose and how they must wait for approval to cross. Younger children understand best by actually "doing" a routine instead of just being told about it. Familiarity and then repetition are the best guidelines for ensuring child safety all school year long.•Resist the urge to speed or
make any t r affic ru l es exception because you are running late. Whipping your car around, getting your child to dash out of the car to reach the classroom before the s c h o o l b e l l r i n g s , o r encouraging a "drop-and-dash" drop-off is the recipe for disaster in terms of child safety. You would rather your child receive a tardy notice than to be in an accident.• K n o w a l l t r a ffi c r u l e s concerning school zones and traffic flows. Remember, ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Drive your pattern now and familiarize yourself with the various speed zones. Be aware of which side of the car your child sits, and consider positioning her to the side most convenient for exiting. If your child is in a "drop" situation, see if the child seat or booster seat is something he can put on or off safely; the same holds t rue fo r l ap be l t s and shoulder harnesses.•Refrain from using your cell phone, palm, or any other distraction while around school zones. This common-sense advice really applies whenever a motorist is beh ind the whee l , bu t especially when in a driving
si tuat ion around young children and their perhaps spontaneous actions.Driving through a school zone can be dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers if safety isn't a priority. Statistics show that when you drive through a school zone at 10 miles an hour instead of 15, you are two-thirds less likely to strike and kill a pedestrian. You are also asked to stay focused and keep your eyes on what is coming up. Do not use your phone or change a radio station- that breaks your concentration. Plan ahead! This allows you to arrive at your destination on time by d e a l i n g b e t t e r w i t h unplanned events like a traffic back-up. Don't forget to stop for school buses on both sides of undivided roads while they drop off passengers. Watch out for p e o p l e c o m i n g o u t o f driveways and watch for bike traffic and don't forget to obey all rules of the road. Nobody wants their child to get hurt, and nobody would want to live with the guilt of running over a child due to negligence while driving. Please be extra careful in school zones, pay attention and lets keep our children safe. If you would like the Sheriff or a Deputy to come to your community, organization or school and give a safety
speech or help set up a n e i g h b o r h o o d w a t c h program, please call the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s O ffi c e . I f y o u h a v e information that will help us solve a crime, or information about a drug dealer, contact Undersheriff Frankie

September Horticulture Tips for the Homeowner
The kids are back in school! Now attention can be turned back to landscaping for the fall. Here are a few simple horticulture tips for the month of September.General Landscape:•Watch for fall specials at garden centers and
nurseries since fall is a great time for planting many ornamentals.• C h o o s e s p r i n g flowering bulbs as soon as available.•P lan t coo l -season annuals like pansies, ornamental cabbage or kale, snapdragons and d u s t y m i l l e r w h e n temperatures begin to cool.•Watch for and control late infestations of tree webworms.•Begin to reduce the amount o f l i gh t on o u t s i d e t r o p i c a l houseplants by placing them under shade trees before bringing them indoors for winter.Vegetables:• Yo u h a v e a l l o f September to plant cool-season vegetables like spinach, leaf
lettuce, mustard and radishes, and until the middle of September to plant rutabagas, Swiss C h a r d , g a r l i c a n d turnips.Lawn:• W i n t e r b r o a d l e a f weeds like dandelion will begin to emerge in late September, which is also the best time to control them with a 2,4-D type herbicide.•If pre-emergent control of winter-annual weeds (henbi t , chickweed, annual bluegrass, etc.) is desired in lawns, the
application should be
c o m p l e t e d b y t h e s e c o n d w e e k o f September.•Plan to seed fescue or ryegrass as needed in shady areas in mid- to late-September. Fall is t h e b e s t t i m e t o establish cool-season lawns.

Real ly, cr iminals owing millions in fines for stealing from us, the taxpayers. Simply seize their bank accounts and properties. Put them back in jail would work best. They wil l pay up. Someone not paying child support would get more penalties than these people and they would be sitting in jail. Quit playing games with them.
City of Hartshorne has some greedy employee's. I had thought the city was on the right track but after the live stream video on the MNC Facebook page (8-13-18), I
WAS WRONG!!! The last bunch stole millions but this new bunch of employee's want high dollar raises. Better yet, when Aaron Williams didn't get his $5.00 raise he wanted, he acted like a big baby and left. Even with him acting like he did the council STILL gave him a $ 2 . 5 5 r a i s e . F o l k s o f Hartshorne we may never see the money going into the city's in fracture with at every meeting employee's wanting more and more. But HEY employee's, get it while the getting is good. Throw a fit and you get rewarded. WOW! Isn't that the American
way now?!!!!!
Another good quote is “talk is c h e a p . ” C o n g r e s s m a n Steven Palazzo is a man of action, not words. Just check his voting record for the proof of this. He is doing the work t h a t m u s t b e d o n e i n Washington.
The contact sport of football can cause head as well as spinal cord injury. So let’s ban a l l foo tba l l . Le t ’s a lso e l i m i n a t e a l l A T V s , handguns, t rampol ines, c h e e r l e a d i n g , b o x i n g , motorcycles, air travel, jet s k i s , g y m n a s t i c s , i c y sidewalks in winter, falling tree limbs and don’t forget to outlaw all types of motor vehicles. When researching head/spinal injuries, the previous threats are what popped up. Football didn’t appear c lose to be ing concern.
CBS News used the word “ legendary“ to describe Beyoncé and Jay Z in the same sentence they called Aretha Franklin “legendary.“ Absurd! Those two have had nowhere near the impact on music l isteners and the music industry that Aretha Franklin has had.
We in the United States are t ru ly for tunate to have President Trump as our s u p r e m e l e a d e r , h i s intelligence, compassion, v e r a c i t y , h i g h m o r a l standards and love of all living things has succeeded in “making our country great again.” I propose that we free President Trump from the boundaries of the United States and give him to the world so he can “make the Earth great again”.
My heart goes out to the parents of the inmate who was burned in prison. That has to be extremely difficult for them not to be getting answers about their son’s condition. Regardless of what he is serving time for, he is a human being and this incident never should have happened. The parents should at least be allowed to see their son and speak to his treating physician.
Somebody order some pizzas so we can get our roads fixed. Seems our politicians can’t figure it out.
If the media would stop showing the anthem protests and the media would stop writing about them, it would fade away.
Well, the NFL preseason is now under way and the spoiled, ungrateful, ignorant and over paid "entertainers" have struck first with their d i s respec t fu l behav io r toward our flag, national anthem and country. And again, no NFL this season for me!
I f p e o p l e w a n t t o k i l l themselves with drugs and then police decide to save them, they should have to reimburse cost.
Why don’t people realize that they are responsible for knowing when their divers license is ready to expire and plan accordingly? Also, there is an option to renew it online for eight years, too. Services like this are being curtailed all over.
This is to the white Chevy
truck with the yellow tag. I don’t know who you think you are passing and speeding in a construction zone. And in a NO PASSING ZONE at that! On Gowen Mountain at 3:16pm Friday afternoon.
Trump, play stupid games, win stupid prizes! The cat is out of the bag and you soon are out! Sam
