Oxygen is a basic need required for life. Death occurs within in minutes if breathing stops. Brain damage & serious illness occurs without oxygen

Three processes involved:1. air moving in and out of lungs2. O2 and Co2 exchange at alveoli3. Blood carrying o2 and removing CO2

Lack of oxygen to the cells
s/sx: restless dizzy confusion behavior change increase pulse increase respirations cyanosis dyspnea

Tachypnea Bradypnea Apnea Hypoventilation Hyperventilation Dyspnea Cheyne stokes- increase rate & depth, then
become shallow & slow Orthopnea Biot’s- rapid & deep breathing then apnea Kussmaul’s- very deep & rapid, sign of diabetic
coma Respiratory arrest- to stop breathing Respiratory distress- body tries to compensate to
increase O2

1. Positioning
2. Cough and deep breathing
3. Respirex/incentive spironmeter

1. Types:a. continuousb. Intermittent ( PRN)
2. Sources;a. oxygen tank ( green)
-Crack tank- open & close tank quickly to remove debris
b. Oxygen concentrator c. Liquid oxygen d. wall units

A. Nasal Canula- max 6L/min.B. Face maskC. Partial re-breathing maskD. Venturi Mask-precise O2 given
![Page 11: Oxygen needs](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061220/54bab0484a79592f018b45f9/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
E. Non re-breathing mask-no exhaled or room air enter bag, pure- O2 in bag –highest level of O2 for a pt.- keep bag inflated-fill with air prior to putting on pt.

Post precautions outside of room Limit situations that may start fires:
-no smoking- no open flames- ground electrical equipment- avoid electric razor- avoid use of frayed cords- avoid static electricity
-know how to transport O2 safely

Report repair or inadequate fx. Keep tubing off floor Make sure tubing kinked RN must adjust O2 flow rates NA can monitor flow rate
