The Appeal of Christianity
• Christianity offered a life free from the pain and struggle of the mortal world
• Christianity was more simple than polytheism.
• Christianity offered a world in which the humble inherited the earth.
Britain Joins the Cause
• Britain as a whole accepted Christianity in the second half of the seventh century
Denmark
• Missionary activity started around 980.
• The Danish accepted English Christianity more readily than German religion.
Norway
• Hakon, the first king, tried to convert his followers but went back to paganism himself.
•Olaf, Hakon’s successor, succeeded where Hakon failed. He converted Norway and Iceland
Sweden
• Sweden was the most resistant to change due to the public heathen cult.
• King Sigurd led the Swedish to a crusade to the north in 1123.
Conclusion
• Christianity started extremely slowly and almost was snuffed out by the Swedes but it has truly expanded to be one of the great religions of the world.
