We are excited to bring in the new year with the winter issue of
Florida Design’s Palm Beach The Island. Since its very beginning, the
exclusive enclave of Palm Beach has been a mecca for some of the most
interesting personalities in virtually every field. Inside these pages, some
of the most famous Palm Beachers are featured, including Jimmy, Rush,
Rod and, of course, “The Don.”
Now with the social season in full swing, Palm Beach The Island isn’t
missing a beat as we highlight a whirlwind of charity events and holiday
galas in our society pages. And in keeping with the season, we focus on the
yearly art pilgrimmage as collectors and connoisseurs from around the globe
descend upon the Palm Beach area en masse. In addition, Florida Design’s
Palm Beach The Island is a sponsor of the American International Fine Art
Fair, which attracts the rich and famous from the local area and worldwide.
Lest we forget, it is also the season for romance. In this issue, we are
proud to present our cover story, “A Royal Romance,” marking the
engagement of Britain’s Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton. Not
to mention, our ultimate Valentine Gift Guide, which previews unique
presents from Tiffany, Hermès, McLaren and more. You may want to take a
glimpse at the Queen Elizabeth World Voyage that is sure to please that
special someone in your life.
On behalf of the entire staff at Florida Design’s Palm Beach The Island,
we wish you a happy and healthy 2011.

PALM BEACH SCENE
TThe names alone tell the tale — and always have in Palm Beach. Ever since
Henry Flagler, the man who saw Florida as “paradise on earth,” and built railways
and hotels to let the rest of the world in on his heaven, this seaside destination
has taken center stage as business moguls, movie stars, politicos and professional
athletes alike lend their special élan to the Palm Beach scene they call home.
Never content to do things under the radar, real estate tycoon Donald Trump’s
Mar-a-Lago estate encompasses 20 pristinely manicured acres in the mega-exclusive
Palm Beach enclave, while singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett prefers a more
laid-back approach with a small, Bahamian Key West-style home on the island
that he intends to make his pied-à-terre when he’s in town.
JIMMY BUFFETT Singer, songwriter,
author, businessman and producer, 64,
best known for his "island escapism"
lifestyle and music including hits such as
"Margaritaville" (No. 234 on the list of
"Songs of the Century") and "Come
Monday." He has a devoted base of fans
known as "Parrotheads."
RUSH LIMBAUGH Radio personality,
conservative political commentator and an
opinion leader in conservative politics, 60,
infamously hosts The Rush Limbaugh Show,
which is aired throughout the country on
Premiere Radio Networks and is the
highest-rated talk-radio program in the U.S.
Pictured with wife Kathryn Rogers.
ROD STEWART Scottish rocker, singer,
songwriter and musician, 67, has been
ranked as one of the 100 greatest singers
of all time with a distinctive raspy voice
belting out such hits as “Maggie May,”
“Baby Jane” and “Forever Young,” selling
more than 100 million records worldwide
during a career spanning five decades.
CELINE DION French-Canadian pop
singer, songwriter, entrepreneur and
actress, 42, her signature song, “My Heart
Will Go On,” is the theme from the 1998
film Titanic. She became the best-selling
female artist of all time after surpassing
over 200 million albums sold worldwide.
Pictured with pop singer Taylor Swift.
FAMOUS FACES OF PALM BEACHBe it on the court, on stage or in the boardroom, the smiles of Palm Beach’smost recognized residents say it all — there’s no place like home.

DONALD TRUMP Famed real estate mogul, 64, with a net worth of $2.4 billion sits at
No. 153 on the 2010 Forbes 400 list. From his ventures in real estate, hotels and casinos
to NBC’s hit show The Apprentice, Trump just may be the most well-known Palm Beacher.

JAMES PATTERSON Suspense author,
63, dubbed “The Man Who Can’t Miss”
by Time Magazine, just released his latest
novel Swimsuit. To date, Patterson has
had 19 consecutive #1 New York Times
bestselling novels, and holds The New York
Times record for most Hardcover Fiction
bestselling titles by a single author.
JACK NICKLAUS American professional
golfer, 71, also known as "The Golden
Bear," is widely regarded as one of the
greatest professional golfers of all time.
The legacy this PGA legend has left as a
player can be rivaled only by the legacy
he is leaving as a golf course designer,
businessman and philanthropist.
BURT REYNOLDS Strong-featured and
enduring, Reynolds, 74, a genial star of
U.S. cinema, carved his name into 1970s
and ’80s pop culture on-screen as both a
rugged action figure in Deliverance and
The Longest Yard, and then as a wise-
cracking, Southern-type "good ole boy"
in the Smokey and the Bandit movies.
CHRIS EVERT Known as “The Ice Maiden”
for being so cool under fire when other
players melted, Evert, 57, is a former world
No. 1 professional tennis player, winning
18 Grand Slam singles championships,
including a record seven at the French
Open and six at the U.S. Open. Pictured
with tennis pro Anna Kournikova.
PALM BEACH SCENE
FAMOUS FACES OF PALM BEACH
And the list goes on. While infamous radio personality Rush
Limbaugh calls his $26 million oceanfront palace in Palm Beach
home, international singing sensation Celine Dion is putting in a
titanic-sized swimming pool in the backyard of her 5.7-acre
beachfront property on South Florida’s exclusive Jupiter Island.
Sprinkle in a few professional athletes throughout Palm Beach the
likes of top-ranked tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams with a
lavish home in Palm Beach Gardens, “The Golden Bear,” legendary
golf pro Jack Nicklaus, in North Palm Beach and America’s
sweetheart on and off the courts, former tennis champion and
philanthropist Chris Evert in Boca Raton; mix well with a Scottish
rocker, a suspense author and a movie star; and you have the
recipe for some of the most storied gatherings of wealth, social
influence and charitable good works seen anywhere.
VENUS AND SERENA WILLIAMS Sister tennis stars, Serena, 29, a former
World No. 1 and currently ranked World No. 4 in singles and No. 5 in doubles
with sister Venus, 30, currently ranked World No. 5 in singles and in doubles.

AArriving at Budapest’s Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace at
dusk is one of the more memorable moments of a lifetime spent
traveling. And as my taxi rounds the corner to Roosevelt Square,
the golden lights on the historic Chain Bridge, which separates the
two sections of Hungary’s capital, Buda and Pest, sparkle on
the Danube River and I first set eyes on one of the world’s finest
Art Nouveau structures — Gresham Palace.
The hotel’s evolution is a long and fabled tale, tracing a course
from life insurance company and upscale residence in the dawn of
the 20th century, to its modern transformation into a luxury hotel.
In 1903, London’s Gresham Life Assurance Company hired leading
Hungarian architect Zsigmond Quittner to design a building that
would house their foreign headquarters and serve as a residence
for visiting British aristocracy. Quittner, who was influenced by the
Art Nouveau and Secessionist movements of vibrant colors and
fluid lines, chose some of the era’s finest artists and craftsmen to
work on the project, including Hungarian porcelain manufacturer
Zsolnay Ceramics Factory, glass painter and mosaic maker Miksa
Roth, and Gyula Jungfer, who fashioned the large, wrought iron
peacock gates that protect the hotel’s three entrances.
When Gresco Investments acquired the property in 1998, they
received approval from the Budapest Heritage Board to reconstruct
the Gresham into a luxury hotel while retaining its authentic origin.
Gresco then called upon Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts to

FOUR SEASONS GRESHAM PALACE A magnificent Art Nouveau gem is restored into a

The Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace is located in Pest in what many consider one
of the most beautiful squares in Europe. The square is connected to Buda by the grand
sweep of the Chain Bridge, Budapest’s first permanent river crossing over the Danube.

oversee the reconstruction and manage the property. And the Four Seasons did exactly what
Gresham had done a century before — hiring some of the best wrought iron specialists,
glass makers and mosaicists of the 21st century to rebuild the Palace based on how it was
initially constructed, such as Zsolnay Ceramics Factory, who replaced the glass roof to mimic
the original. And after a multi-year, $110 million restoration, the doors reopened in 2004.
In the hotel’s elegantly styled guest rooms, 179 total including 17 suites, romantic
charm blends with high-tech ease. Many feature vaulted ceilings and step-out balconies
with views of the river, and all provide Art Deco furnishings, large marble baths and high-
speed Internet. For dining, the hotel features a gourmet restaurant and bar, the Gresham
Kávéhaz Café. The bar opens onto a lounge that flows into the Peacock Passage, crowned
by a glass-domed cupola. The hotel also offers a spa, fitness center and an indoor pool.
One of the oldest capitals in central Europe, Budapest is now pulsing with renewed vitality.
Located in the heart of the city’s business, art and entertainment district, the Four Seasons
is within easy walking distance of St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Parliament, Market Hall and the
Opera House. The Gresham Palace is one of the city’s most important architectural heirlooms,
and I couldn’t of asked for a better place to stay. For reservations, call 800/545-4000.
ABOVE: “It took thousands of hours for a unique team of highly trained masters to cut this magnificent
Art Nouveau gem into a brilliant jewel,” award-winning restoration artist Miklos Szentkiralyi says. “The
Gresham Palace has been born again in wonderful unity, serving as a crown jewel of outstanding beauty.”
LEFT: A restored glass cupola soars 40 feet over the Peacock Passage, which is lined with boutiques,
and the hotel bar and lounge. Design firm Richmond International chose comfortable furnishings in
shades of green and violet for guests to unwind just as they did a hundred years ago.

PALM BEACH DRIVING CLUB: IN THE FAST LANE WITH DEREK BELL What’s it like going 140 mph plus, heart pounding with every lap of the mind-bendingturns and soul-stirring straights at the Palm Beach International Raceway?

AA constant roar, British racing phenom Derek Bell shows no
signs of slowing down. After winning so many sports car races
over his nearly 50-year career that even Bell himself has lost
count — though five Le Mans 24 Hours, three Daytona 24
Hours and two World Drivers’ Championships come to mind — is
retirement eminent? “Not at all, racing is my life.” Bell says.
“My philosophy: it’s not over till you see the checkered flag.”
Still avidly involved in motorsports as a consultant for the
exclusive Palm Beach Driving Club, Bell is a partner in Bentley
Naples and performs an ambassadorial role for Bentley Motors
worldwide … not to mention his leisurely 140-mph laps around
the Palm Beach International Raceway on any given day. “It’s
lovely to have a track practically on my doorstep,” he says.
An English gentleman, a famed racing driver and a fiercely
popular figure in Europe and the U.S., Bell splits his time
between his 17th-century house near the family farm on the
Sussex coast and his waterfront home in Boca Raton, Fla., that
he shares with his wife, Misti, and their 11-year-old son.
With a reputation of one of the most liked drivers of his
generation, he is known for ‘getting the car home when other
drivers can’t.’ But it wasn’t only his speed that brought the car
home; it was his natural ability to work with people under
pressure — and his ardent persona. “It’s the passion that gets you
there; and it’s the passion that carries you through,” he says.
“I would race every weekend if I could. And I would love to win
Le Mans again … the three greatest races in the world are the
Indy 500, Monaco Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours.”
Early on in his career, Bell caught the eye of Enzo Ferrari
and made his Grand Prix debut — in a Ferrari at Monza, Italy.
ABOVE: “Father’s Day 1995, racing Le Mans with my older son, Justin,
was the most memorable moment in my career,” Derek Bell says. “I was
asked to race Le Mans at the last minute ... just three weeks before the
event. I thought ‘Oh blimey, I’m not in shape.’” Yet, true to form and with
little to no prep time, Bell joined teammates Andy Wallace and Justin
driving a McLaren GTR, the Harrods-sponsored car, in a very physical
race for 24 hours — holding the lead for 16 hours before succumbing
to mechanical malfunctions and finishing a remarkable third.
Bell leads Le Mans 1971 in the iconic 246-mph Porsche 917.
In its only outing, Bell drives the 4WD F1 McLaren at the British Grand Prix, 1969.

“There are very few that have raced for Ferrari,” he says. In fact, Bell’s first race in a Ferrari 512
at Le Mans 1970 launched his uber-successful career — a race Bell relived whilst driving a
Ferrari 512 in the filming of Le Mans starring Steve McQueen later that same year. “I am very
honored to be part of their dynasty.”
Bell’s finest accolade: presented an MBE by the Queen of England for his services to sport.
Winning his first Le Mans in 1975, Bell went on to win two World Sportscar Championship
titles in 1985-86; the 24 Hours of Daytona three times in 1986-87 and 1989; and he
brought in four more wins at Le Mans in 1981, 1982, 1986 and 1987, mostly teamed with
Jacky Ickx in one of the Porsche models. Then Bell found himself in the driver’s seat once
again, this time commentating from the race car for Speedvision, not to mention his role
announcing F1 Grand Prix for ESPN and FOX Sports Net.
Enter Ken Fengler, vice president and general manager of the Palm Beach Driving Club.
“Ken basically brought me to Florida in the ’80s,” Bell says. “We met at an awards ceremony
and the next day at the track we developed the concept of ‘Porsche Precision Driving School
with Derek Bell.’” Fast-forward 25 years, the two longtime friends are a driving force at the
Palm Beach Driving Club. “It’s more than just a race track, it’s a lifestyle,” Fengler says.
“The PBDC offers members the unique opportunity to get in the fast lane with exclusive track
driving sessions and motorsports experiences at one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the
U.S. just minutes from downtown Palm Beach.” And you couldn’t be in better company.

Bentley Motors redefines an innovative brand staple, introducing an even higher standardof design, engineering and refinement with the new-for-2011 Continental GT.
TEXT BY STEVE SILERPHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BENTLEY MOTORS, LTD., CREWE, ENGLAND
STARTING A REVOLUTION
EEight decades have passed since Bentley Motors lost its autonomy — and in turn, its sporting
character — to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars upon the onset of the Great Depression. From then until
1998, when Volkswagen AG brought the brand into its corporate fold (alongside Lamborghini,
Bugatti and Audi, to name a few), most every Bentley was little more than a Rolls-Royce with
a radius-edged grille. But in 2003, Bentley set about regaining what one fabled Brit named
Austin Powers might call its “mojo” with the 12-cylinder Continental GT coupe. Low-slung and
extremely swift, the Continental GT was unlike anything Rolls-Royce had ever made. The
Continental GT was Bentley’s rebellion.
Alas, successful rebellions are for naught if authority does not follow. And authority is
precisely what the new-for-2011 Continental GT conveys. The windswept design of the
original has evolved beautifully and powerfully with all-new body panels, enormous wheels
and exquisitely re-imagined details. The headlamps, for example, are saucer-sized, inboard-
mounted circles, with smaller, high-set outboard ancillary lights, an arrangement meant to
evoke Bentley’s new Mulsanne flagship. Muscular creases in the fenders create an impression
of speed, while further back, widened, oval-themed taillamps are set within the complex
curvature of the fenders — a difficult-to-produce yet elegant design solution.
Opening the door and sliding into the supremely comfortable “Cobra” seats, one comes
face-to-face with an artfully arranged dashboard design. The mood of the Continental’s interior
can vary widely from relaxed opulence to searing intensity depending on the customer’s

ABOVE: The 6-litre, 12-cylinder, twin-turbo-charged engine has a raised output of
567 horsepower, which allows the car to go from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds and
reach a top speed of 198 mph. A new Quickshift transmission enables double
downshifts, while advanced FlexFuel technology allows for the use of either standard
unleaded gasoline or sustainable bioethanol.

desired application of wood and/or aluminum paneling, stitchery and
leathers (the latter able to be color-matched to virtually anything).
Complaints about the previous Connie’s component-sharing with the
spectacularly luxurious but label-challenged Volkswagen Phaeton have
been addressed in the form of new secondary controls, including a
large, high-resolution, touch-screen navigation/audio/climate control system
blessed with more capability, bespoke graphics and, best of all, the
interactive elegance and innovative technology befitting of a Bentley.
Of course, the new Continental GT remains eminently fast and,
thanks to its lower, wider stance, is even more responsive than its
nimble predecessor. An aggressive diet plan removed 140 pounds from
the Continental’s overall weight, while under the broad bonnet resides
a revised twin-turbocharged 12-cylinder engine that is both more
powerful and efficient than last year’s mill. Upcoming is a V-8 option
for customers desiring to tread a touch more lightly upon the earth while
still enjoying the sybaratic delights each Continental innately presents.
Meanwhile, as the sexy, sporty 2011 Continental GT, with a starting
price of $189,900, takes the reigns from its rebellious original, it picks
up where Bentley left off some 80 years ago — re-establishing its
authority as the purveyor of some of the world’s most engaging and
emotional super-luxury cars. Welcome back.
The new Continental GT is available at Bentley Palm Beach, a division
of Braman Motorcars. For more information or to purchase a vehicle,

ASHLEY JOHNGALLERY
With more than 200 works of art ondisplay, this Palm Beach gallery offersremarkable paintings that speak a universal language.
TEXT BY KIM MOSLEYPHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER FAY
ABOVE: Longtime art collector, author and owner of the art
gallery Jim’s of Lambertville in New Jersey, Jim Alterman
opens his new Ashley John Gallery in Palm Beach on the
corner of Worth Avenue and South County Road.
It’s been more than 30 years since 12-year-old Jim Alterman
was first inspired by the appeal of objets d’art … antiques,
paintings, sculpture and jewelry alike. “I would ride around on
my bike and rummage through what others would throw
away,” Alterman says. “I frequented garage sales, flea markets
and auctions on the weekends with my mom. We opened our
first store when I was 14.” And the creative wheels of this
seasoned entrepreneur — owner of Ashley John Gallery in
Palm Beach — have not stopped turning since.
Whether from his main gallery, Jim’s of Lambertville that
overlooks the Delaware River in New Jersey, or among the
islanders of Palm Beach at his boutique gallery on the corner
of Worth Avenue and South County Road, Alterman’s exhibits
breathe new life into paintings displayed against walls of white
in an endeavor to create positive energy for all who view these
works of art. “Walls were made to be filled with art,” he says.
“Paintings and sculpture speak to an international community
like Palm Beach filled with both art lovers and grandiose homes.”
And among Alterman’s recent accomplishments: author,
designer and publisher of New Hope For American Art — a
comprehensive tome heavily weighted with illustrations of
works by painters from an art colony formed in the early 1900s
in the picturesque river town of New Hope, Penn.
A longtime collector and expert in the field of Pennsylvania
Impressionist and Modernist painting, the author uses the power
of the palette to tell the story of artists who painted in and around
the New Hope Art Colony from 1900 to 1960, many of whom
were regarded among the nation’s finest. “As Impressionism
fell out of favor in the mid 20th century, these artists became
somewhat forgotten,” Alterman writes. “Only in the last two
decades have these talented artists been brought back to light.”

“True art collectors don’t stop
enjoying and appreciating art
during slow economic times,”
gallery owner Jim Alterman says.
“They collect art because they love it.”
Now, at a time when most people are being much more
conservative in their spending — especially on non-essential
items — Alterman is not concerned about opening his gallery,
having used the last two years as an opportunity to capitalize
on buying great art for bargain prices. “True art collectors don’t
stop enjoying and appreciating art during slow economic times,”
he says. “They collect art because they love it.”
Alterman modeled the Ashley John Gallery (named for his
5-year-old twins, Ashley and John) after his flagship gallery in
Lambertville. “I believe in covering the walls with great art and
that’s exactly what I’ve done,” he says. “There are more than
200 paintings on display, mostly 20th-century American. We
have a great variety of Impressionist, Contemporary and
Modern works ranging from 1900 to the present.” For more
information, call the gallery at 561/429-8454. i

A ROYAL ROMANCE
WWe’ve had a long time to get to know her — Catherine “Kate” Middleton, eldest daughter of
commoners whose great, great, great, great grandfather was a miner in the coal pits of pre-Victorian
England. For over eight years, Kate has been the mostly on-again girlfriend of Britain’s Prince William.
Now, finally, as the British public exhales with relief, on April 29th, in Westminster Abbey, this
daughter of upwardly mobile on-line party suppliers will marry the Prince, and step into a world
where a curtsey’s depth is measured and a camera is never far away.
One only hopes that the romantic providence of the last two Princes of Wales will turn with William.
Both his father and his father’s great-uncle, Edward, had marriages that were nothing if not riveting ...
and the press kept track of it all.
On the eve of World War II, the former Prince of Wales, then Edward VIII, was the first British
monarch to abdicate the throne. He was smitten by a twice-divorced American with a strong will and
a magnetism the King could not resist. Unacceptable as a royal consort, on December 10, 1936,
Edward, age 42, gave up the monarchy to become the Duke of Windsor and Wallace Simpson, his
Duchess. While the marriage lasted 35 years, the pair seemed to wander the globe, following the
social seasons from Paris to their particular favorite, Palm Beach. But the bittersweet fragrance of
the exile seemed to follow them.
The next Prince of Wales, Charles, current heir to the throne, was also late to marry — but not so
late to divorce. Having been encouraged by his uncle, former Indian Viceroy, Louis Mountbatten, to sow
his wild oats and avoid entanglements, Charles let Camilla, the woman he loved, go on to marry
another man. Unfortunately, in choosing Diana Spencer, young and lovely, but whom he, in fact, did
not love, the stage was set for failure.
ABOVE LEFT: It seems like yesterday. The 20-year-old
Diana, Princess of Wales and a youthful Prince
Charles ride in a fairy-tale carriage after their
wedding at St. Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981,

far from fairyland, ending in divorce 15 years later.

Now, nearly 30 years after Charles proposed to Lady Diana Spencer, their son, at 28, is taking
the marital plunge. But despite the spectacular 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring the two women will
have shared, Diana and Kate have some striking differences.
While Diana, who never attended college, described herself as “thick as a plank,” Kate Middleton
has a degree from the University of St Andrews in History of Art. Diana was just out of her teens
when she married Charles, 13 years her senior, and had only addressed him as “sir” before their
engagement. Kate is six months younger than William and as college classmates had roomed with him
and a group of friends before recently moving with him to a private cottage on the Isle of Anglesey.
Moreover, the royal family has had time to get to know Kate, and presumably some of the courtiers
who made Diana’s life a trial have loosened up and accepted that flexibility in royal behaviors won’t
bring down the kingdom. Yet beyond a knack for stylish couture, looking great on the slopes, and a
willingness to walk a few paces behind their husbands, Diana and Kate share the most important thing:
the love and admiration of Prince William.
Choosing a remote log cabin on the high slopes of Mount Kenya, William had backpacked in his
mother’s ring, carrying it about for the 15 days before he popped the question. According to Prince
Harry, William’s brother, it was his idea to seal the offer with Diana’s ring. At her death, William had
gotten a watch and Harry, the ring. Harry thought William could use it before he would.
With this marriage soon to be a fait accompli, will the royal yentas now focus their sights on Prince
Harry? Undoubtedly. And given the ruggishly handsome, red-haired pilot, third in line to the throne,
with some of the party-loving spirit of his Great-Aunt Margaret and Uncle Andrew, the busy playing
field this time should be fun to watch.
ABOVE: Britain’s Prince Harry, 26, third in line to the throne, is a fun-loving young royal now training as an attack

designer Tory Burch creates clothing
with a modern flair and a bohemian

WWith a primary residence on Philadelphia’s Main Line,
where homes proclaim tradition, elegance and turreted
Edwardian pomp, one Pennsylvania couple was looking for
a change with a cheerful yet glamorous design for their
new Palm Beach vacation home — one filled with whimsical
color, swirling patterns, petal-draped poolside umbrellas
and plenty of light.
After vacationing in the Palm Beach area for 15 years,
the couple decided that it was finally time for a little place
of their own — a 6,000-square-foot, Spanish Revival-style
getaway located between both the Atlantic Ocean and the
Intracoastal Waterway. “I’ve always loved Palm Beach. It’s,
for me, one of the most beautiful places in the world,” the
wife says. “And I wanted this house to be a happy place
filled with light and fun.”
And Philadelphia-based designers Eric Rymshaw and
Joshua Thibault understood exactly what the owners were
after. Having done major work on the couple’s Main Line
manor house, the team respected the owners’ quest for
quality. “It was a wonderful collaboration all the way
through,” Rymshaw says.
But turning a house with good bones into a comfortable
family retreat would take some doing, and revising spatial
definitions were just a part of it. “We recast the dining room
as a media/sitting room,” Thibault says. “And turned the
family room adjacent to the kitchen into a casual dining
room.” And the dazzling garden and pool area provided the
anchor for the designer’s adjustments. “It’s all about the sun,”
Rymshaw says. “Every room involves the play of light.”
Rymshaw, who always devises a “narrative” for himself
about a house and the wishes of its owner, in this case,
thought of dramatic and rather glamorous living with a
wow factor. “Think Halston meets 1940s Hollywood meets
Pop,” he says of the result that is anything but dated.

From the entrance, the view is past the vaulted, midnight-blue ceilings of the
colonnade, into the living room and out to the shimmering pool area beyond. Softening
the Old World style of the home’s cast-coral pillars and fireplace, the living room is alight
with textures and geometric shapes. Whimsical chairs in a circle motif appear made of
lattice, while smaller spheres dance in the sheer drapery fabric. Chevron patterns of blue
and gold on the accent pillows introduce the home’s signature color palette, which is
also seen in a pair of vibrant prints by Rana Rochat that hang on the fireplace wall.
Martha Sturdy’s custom-designed, cast-resin cocktail table glows in a goldenrod hue

the light that flows throughout, while
Gio Ponti consoles delicately flank the
fireplace. The whole room is anchored with
a hand-woven abaca area rug that sits over
the limestone flooring.
Color continues into the dining room
with Polly Apfelbaum’s bright monumental

glamour and whimsy. A capiz shell and
bronze chandelier illuminates the space,

around the room in a zebra-print barstool,
barreled dining chairs, and a walnut and
parchment buffet.
Steps away, the media/sitting room
seems an extension of the nearby living
room with coordinating sofas and area
rugs. Here, though, the sofa is paired with
brown and cream chenille lounge chairs in
an abstract print and a leather-covered
ottoman with Moroccan-inspired nailhead
detailing. Light filters in through sheer
drapery fabric to cast a soft, warm glow
throughout the space.
Outside, the feel of 1920s grandeur
allows the owners to relax in style with
resort-like chaises and playful umbrellas.
“The final touches to this home were the
most fun,” says Rymshaw, who feels that
the lightly fluttering petals of the umbrellas
and the bright bursts of color make the
poolside sing. “It’s all about creating magic,”
he says, “pop and opulence combined.”

West Palm Beach-based Environmental Technology Control, or ETC, founded
by Bill Maronet in 1987, provides the latest in superior home automation
technology to the luxury residential market. And, more than 20 years later,
ETC has grown from a one-employee, start-up company to a nationally
recognized, award-winning enterprise that offers full-service design and
installation for any and all home technology needs.
ETC’s many services include custom home theaters, automated control
systems for music, video and lighting, phone systems, surveillance cameras,
security access controls, motorized networks and more. Whether it’s a new
build or upgrades to an existing home, the talented, innovative and well-trained
engineers will individually design systems for each client’s varying lifestyle.
But the real strength behind ETC is its overall commitment to service. ETC
has in-house experts for each type of system the company installs, and the
company’s top-level customer service also includes emergency support 24
hours a day, 365 days a year, and with a guaranteed two-hour response time.
At ETC, the options are endless. For more information, call 561/881-8118

PALM BEACH FINE CRAFT SHOW
One of the oldest traditions in human history is the working of glass,
bronze and nature’s elements into aesthetic and functional forms.
Celebrated works in ceramics, glass, couture art-to-wear, jewelry, furniture,
and wood-turned and carved objects are presented by over 115 artists at
the 8th Annual Palm Beach Fine Craft Show hosted in West Palm Beach, Fla.,
at the Palm Beach County Convention Center from March 4-6, 2011.
Poising objects as conceptual forms for sculptural visions — some purely
decorative and some functional — these fine pieces strike a balance
between art and craftsmanship that capture the imagination. For more
information, visit www.craftsamericashows.com or call 203/254-0486.
Ceramics, glass, textiles, paper and wood on display from March 4-6, 2011.

PALM BEACH FINANCE
DIAMONDS: A COMPELLING INVESTMENT FOR UNCERTAIN TIMES?Enchanting treasures that have fascinated mankind throughout the centuries, diamonds are a symbol oflove, power and unparalleled beauty that can also offer peace of mind in turbulent financial times.
Diamonds mitigate your systematic risk exposure
The motives for buying diamonds did not include a financial incentive until the 1970s,
when on August 15th, 1971, the world’s economies abandoned the gold standard. Since
then, credit creation has spiked significantly, and the U.S. Government’s budget deficits
have swelled to unprecedented highs with a corresponding historic rise in the federal
debt. What is certain is that the level of uncertainty has risen dramatically and, with it, the
value of predictive models has waned, and the proliferation of hedging methods, such as
swaps, options, futures and forward contracts to hedge against this uncertainty, still do
nothing to mitigate against systematic risk. Throughout the centuries, royalty and the
ultra-wealthy alike have chosen to own diamonds as these gems have provided them,
amongst many other pleasures, durable financial security in the form of a private, tangible,
personal, easily portable and international currency of last resort; because you never know.
Diamonds provide a portfolio hedge
By blending the emotional aspect of a diamond purchase along with the rational elements
of investing money in the most concentrated store of value that exists (a high-quality
diamond weighing just 2 or 3 grams can be worth as much as 100 kilos of gold), diamonds
offer a compelling alternative investment and portfolio hedge for the long-term investor,
as historic data has shown that diamond prices are virtually uncorrelated with real estate
prices and the stock market indices (S&P, DJ), and that they are negatively correlated
with long-term bond yields (46 percent) and short-term interest rates (36 percent). Thus,
long-term investors with significant equity, real estate and bond exposure will add a
strong hedge with diamonds and reduce their overall investment risk profile, all the while
enjoying the beauty and artistic expression of the gems they own.
Supply/demand context favors higher prices
Diamond prices have risen by an average of 15% per annum since 1949 according to
statistics published by diamond manufacturer Ajediam. With annual demand growth of
eight to 10 percent expected over the coming years, given the growing number of high
net worth individuals in Asia, Russia and the Middle East, investing in diamonds (and as
the universality of the engagement ring expands its reach); and with annual production

growth expected to remain in the low single-digit figures, the supply/demand context
favoring higher prices does not look set to change in the intermediate future. De Beers
Managing Director Gareth Penny was noted saying: “the reality is that supply cannot keep
up, and that will become very accentuated over the next 15 years.” At the upper end of
the market, prices for important and rare diamonds are at historical highs with numerous
world-record prices being broken on the global auction marketplace throughout the
year. At a recent Christie’s jewelry sale in Hong Kong, 89 percent of the lots on offer were
sold generating $60.4 million in sales. Seven diamond items sold for more than $1 million
each, including a pair of fancy deep blue heart-shaped diamonds; large, white pear-shaped
diamond earrings; a brilliant 13.67-carat, E color internally flawless diamond, which sold
for $1.74 million; and a rare pink diamond, which sold for a record $10.8 million.
Advantages of owning diamonds
Consider the facts of owning diamonds: they are tangible (and have no real estate taxes
associated with them, although there are insurance costs); they are durable (no tool can
cut them and even the fiercest fire will leave them unscathed); they are portable (a port-
folio worth millions of dollars fits nicely inside an envelope that can easily be transported
in your coat pocket quietly and legally); they are international tender (and can be sold
globally in most major cities and converted into any major currency, thus acting as a
U.S. dollar hedge); they are private and free of government control (as a non-reporting
asset, records of diamond ownership are for the most part private and there is no public
record available in cases of civil action, divorce, lawsuits, etc); they are inherently rare (similar
to oil, there are vested interests that will protect this); they have independent value from
financial markets (they are non-correlated); and so can diversify your portfolio, protect it
from hyperinflation and international financial crisis, and lastly, they provide you with an
emergency disaster fund available on your lady’s finger. Now that’s an investment!

What are some lifestyle changes that people can make to have a healthy heart?
With just a few changes in your daily routine and by being more cautious with small details
in your habits, you can improve your heart health tremendously. I have outlined a few habits
anyone can adopt to help avoid heart disease:
Don’t smoke.
Have less beige and brown in your diet. Eat brightly colored foods that are red, green,
yellow, purple and orange (these are known to contain the most nutrients).
Eat fruit instead of drinking fruit juices.
Avoid regular soda.
Eat lean protein.
Stick to a low carbohydrate diet (30% of diet should be from carbs).
Eat plenty of whole grains.
Make sure to minimize salt in your diet.
Check the labels, know what a serving size really is for a true estimate of calories and sodium.
How important is exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to heart health?
Heart disease results from many risk factors. Some of these risk factors are under our control.
Controlling these risk factors may prevent or slow its development. Keeping up with regular
cardiovascular exercise is key and is within our control. Your heart is a muscle and you must
exercise it to keep it in good condition. Knowing your numbers can help you determine if your
cholesterol level, weight and blood pressure are within a healthy and medically acceptable
range. Here are tips to follow when it comes to keeping up with cardiovascular exercise:
Plan to sweat daily.
If you make exercise part of your daily schedule, you will do it. If you try to fit it in when
you can, you won’t.
Find a physical activity that you enjoy doing, weights and running are not for everybody.
Dancing, swimming, biking and any type of sport are all good options.
How important is managing stress to heart health? The role of stress in heart disease has
not been clearly established, but stress might trigger an event in patients at risk. Unfortunately, we
cannot control the stressors we have in our lives. We can, however, control our reaction to
stressors and therefore reduce the risk of heart disease. People manage stress in many different
ways. Each person is different and whatever relieves stress is different from one individual to the
next. I have found that many forms of exercise, yoga or any form of relaxation are common stress
relieving tactics. Just find something that works for you and make time in your schedule to do it.

UPDATE
What is ARTEFILL? “Long-lasting,” ARTEFILL is an elegant wrinkle corrective filler that
improves over the course of several months and stands the test of time. It is a simple,
in-office procedure where you will see results immediately and be able to return to
normal daily activities. Artefill is made with unique microsphere-enhanced collagen. It is
the ideal solution for those patients who do not want to return for repeat treatments with
temporary fillers.
What is SCULPTRA-Aesthetic? It is an injectable that “volumizes” and replaces lost
collagen, and provides structure to severely depressed facial tissue loss. Remarkably,
SCULPTRA-Aesthetic helps to gradually replace lost collagen. It gives natural-looking
results that can last up to two years.
What is DYSPORT and how does it differ from BOTOX? DYSPORT contains the same
neurotoxin-A that is in BOTOX except that it is a smaller molecule which results in better
diffusion for patients who look to improve the moderate to severe frown lines between
the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Dysport generally takes effect sooner and lasts longer
than Botox.
What is ZERONA? ZERONA removes fat and reduces inches. Zerona “low-light” laser
is the only non-invasive body slimming device in the world that is proven in multiple
double blind trials. It painlessly achieves clinically significant results in just two weeks. In
addition, fat that is resistant to diet and exercise is reduced. There is zero pain, zero
surgery and zero downtime.
What is THERMAGE? THERMAGE uses patented radiofrequency (RF) technology to safely
heat the deeper layers of skin, stimulating existing collagen and promoting new collagen
growth for younger looking skin. Everyone can expect some collagen. Many patients have
seen smoother, tighter skin with less sagging; redefined contours along the jaw line;
softening of wrinkles and fine lines around the mouth, eyes and forehead; and tightening
of saggy skin under the chin. Non-painful and with no downtime, with the latest generation
Thermage CPT, results appear in a single treatment without surgery or injections.

A JEWELBOX OF BOUTIQUES
Gateway to the world-famous shopping destination of Worth Avenue,
150 Worth is known to discerning shoppers as the foremost haute
couture experience on Palm Beach. Just steps away from the Atlantic
Ocean, this jewelbox of ultra-luxe boutiques is collected in a beautiful
Mizner-influenced enclave surrounding a Mediterranen-style via that
offers shade and a fountain’s splash as shoppers gaze at Gucci and
Vuitton, and the latest lines from Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Here, some of the strongest fashion trends will dress the windows in
spring as chic attire gets a seasonal makeover. A simple clutch may be
the perfect polished accessory, while just the right stiletto style is sure
to catch the eye of all the well-heeled islanders.
There is nowhere more beautiful than the sun-kissed boutiques known as 150 Worth on the Island.

PALM BEACH 150 WORTH
A JEWELBOX OF BOUTIQUES
Anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, this epicenter of the finest in European and
domestic fashions, home furnishings, jewelry and gourmet dining features legendary fashion boutiques
including Louis Vuitton, Emilio Pucci, Hugo Boss, Rene Caovilla, Christofle, Lacoste, Tory Burch,
Vilebrequin and Gucci’s new 4,500-square-foot store, the retailer’s third location on the island since 1961.
Palm Beach has played a unique role in Gucci’s history. The Italian fashion brand, founded in Florence
in 1921 — known for its shoes, belts, handbags and luggage — first came to the island almost 50 years ago.
“We are thrilled that Gucci has selected 150 Worth for its new Palm Beach store,” says Murray Goodman,
chairman of The Goodman Company and owner of 150 Worth. “And we welcome them as our third
anchor fashion store, joining Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.”
And once the shopping spirit has been channeled, soothe the soul and the palate at one of the many
fine dining destinations like Trevini Ristorante, where the artful approach to classic Italian cuisine makes
150 Worth a savory experience — day or night.
ABOVE: The facade outside Saks Fifth Avenue
is carpeted with a Living Wall, a plant palette
of various hues, popularized in Paris. Likely in
full bloom by spring, it is controlled by a series
of metal boxes, each one holding the plant’s
roots, computer chips and irrigation sensors.

In America, when we get knocked down, we don’t stay down.
In the last 80 years, America has experienced 13 economic recessions.
And fought back with 13 economic expansions.
It was never easy, but it was always possible.
If you’re bullish on America, and we are, then you’re bullish on
getting up and coming back.
That’s not a belief. That’s history.

SPOTLIGHT ON
C
SPACE TO GROW
Cedric Du Pont opened his first store, Cedric Du Pont Antiques, on Palm Beach’s Cocoanut Row in 1996 and another in
Southampton, N.Y., a short time later. “I had one gallery in Southampton and one in Palm Beach, and I realized that often
a client was at one location looking for a piece that was in the other,” he says. “So, I decided to close both and open a
larger one in West Palm Beach. And, after being at the same location for 10 years, I have once again outgrown my space
and am excited to bring my entire collection under one roof.”
From acquiring a new piece to restoring one from his clients’ own collections, Du Pont’s years of experience, vast knowledge
and team of highly skilled, European craftsmen enable him to meet the individual needs of his clientele — which include
such names as Rod Stewart, Donald Trump and Céline Dion. And it is Du Pont’s excellent skill of finding just the right piece
that has led to one of the most impressive collections of 18th and 19th-century antique furniture and accessories from
France, Italy and throughout Europe, and has him outgrowing his current space in West Palm Beach, Fla., and opening a
new, 20,000-square-foot gallery on Antique Row.
From the marble and antique parquet floors, to the custom-made crown molding and stone walls, every detail of the
new, two-story gallery, which is set to open January 2011, was designed from Du Pont’s own vision, and will feature a grand
chateau feel that will convey the renowned antiquity dealer’s French heritage and style — enabling his beautiful and
storied pieces to have the proper setting. For more information, call 561/835-1319 or visit www.cedricdupontantiques.com. i
