Every child needs to be active and use their imagination! A perfect outlet for that is this classic children’s toy…in a fun miniature version. Perfect for filling Easter Baskets, Stockings, party Favors, Gift Toppers and more.

The idea for this first popped in to my head while I was filling my son’s bubble wand for the 5th time. I first made them with bubble wands and then expanded ideas for ‘sticks’ from there. I create my patterns by hand, picturing my end product and carefully drawing out each piece

with a trusty pencil and eraser. The eraser gets plenty of use. I have put a lot of hard work in to developing my patterns and putting them in a tutorial form and I greatly appreciate your

honesty and respect of my copyright. Please review my copyright statement at the end of this tutorial.

Please read the tutorial in its entirety before beginning this project. I stand behind all of my products and encourage you to contact me if you should have any questions along the way.

My contact information can be found at the end of this tutorial.

Now, gather up your materials and let’s get an adorable party size pony made…or even a little herd of them!

Preparation

1. Gather the materials, notions and equipment listed on the supply page 2. Cut the pattern pieces from the paper 3. Following the cutting instructions on each pattern piece, trace and cut your pattern pieces out of fabric

Keep the following diagram in mind…the placement on the grain of the fabric is imperative to the proper shape of the finished horse. There is no specific grain placement necessary for the ear.

4. Iron fabric pieces 5. Use a ¼ inch seam allowance unless otherwise noted.

Construction/Assembly

1. Prepare Stick

If using a wooden dowel, sand the dowel as needed, apply oil, stain or paint if desired or leave natural. If using a bubble wand, glitter stick or glow wand remove any tags or packaging. Remove seal from bubbles. You can fill tubes now or after your pony is complete.

2. Sew Ears

Sew the ears together using slightly more than a 1/8” seam allowance, leaving the bottom open. Backstitch the seam ends so the stitch holds as you are turning the ears right side out. Turn right side out and iron. Fold sides inward and sew in place with a 1/8” seam allowance just to tack in place.

3. Sew Ears on Head Pieces Angle the ear at an angle as pictured below, this will allow the ear to be more upright when complete. Use about a 1/8” seam allowance and taper the stitch just after the ear to close off the stitch as pictured below.

4. Sew the Head Together Start by turning the bottom edge of the neck up about ¼”, iron and sew the hem

Pin the head together and sew around the head using a 1/4” seam allowance. Leave the hemmed edge/bottom of the neck open. Backstitch the beginning and end of the seam. Clip the curves to allow for a smoother finished product, prevent it from puckering. Tip: don’t skip clipping the curves, this step is vital to the proper shape of the head once it is turned right side out and stuffed. Clip close to the seam, however, be very careful not to clip the seam.

5. Eyes If you are using safety bolted eyes, put them in place now. (skip this step if using paste on eyes) Ensure you have marked the eyes on the fabric as indicated on the pattern pieces. Using the awl, put a hole in the fabric where the eye placement is located. Put the shank of the eye through the hole and secure the washer on the shank (inside the head) flush against the fabric and back of the eye. Repeat with the other eye.

6. Stuff the Head Use the fiber-filling to stuff the head to a soft tight firmness, keeping the shape intact without making the face/head too fat. Leave the bottom ¼ unstuffed to allow for fabric to close the neck around the stick. You may need to stuff a little more or un-stuff some when it comes time to apply the stick.

7. Place Head on Stick Make a ‘well’ in the fiber filling with your finger and push the stick in the head. Your choice of stick will dictate how far the stick can be placed. Look at the photos below for approximate placement of the stick (an example is provided for bubble wands and for most other stick options. Align the stick with the ears as pictured for proper head positioning. Secure the head in place using the zip tie, pull as tight as possible (careful not to crinkle or collapse the empty tube if using an empty tube or other more ‘flimsy’ option). Position the zip tie end at the seam on the back of the neck. Make sure the end of the neck is bloused above the zip tie to give a nice rounded finished look. (picture sample below)

8. Trim Zip Tie and Secure Head Clip the end of the zip tie (this can be done with scissors or a closer cut can be achieved with fingernail clippers). Apply hot glue under the “skirt” of the stick horse’s neck (the fabric below the zip tie) right along where the zip tie holds the fabric in place. This will help keep the head in place as the zip tie alone can still allow the head to be slipped/pulled off.

9. Cut and Apply Ribbon Cut three pieces of ribbon, these will be trimmed a little as you apply them:

• 5” long (base trim) • 7” long (noseband) • 10” long (headstall)

Start at the “knot” on the zip tie (at the seam on the back). Glue one end of the 5” ribbon to the knot and continue gluing to the zip tie all around the base until you meet back at the starting point. Trim as needed and glue the end down.

10. Apply Ribbon for Bridle Place a dot of glue on one end of the 10” piece of ribbon. Place this glued end (as pictured and as noted on the pattern piece) about ½” above the curve in the chin on the face of the horse. Then wrap the ribbon around behind the ears and back the same location on the opposite side of the face. Trim as needed and glue in place with a small dot of hot glue.

Then use the 7” piece of ribbon, place a small dot of hot glue on one end and place it on the seam of the chin as pictured below.

Then wrap the ribbon around the nose, placing a small amount of hot glue on the “head stall” ribbon and tacking it in place…then continuing around the nose and gluing in place on the opposite side. Ending at the seam, overlap the ribbon a little, trim as needed and glue in place.

11. Apply Paste on Eyes

If you used safety bolt eyes, disregard this step. Put a generally small amount of hot glue on the back of the paste on eye, careful not to put too much or too close to the edge that it will seep out…but enough to hold the eye in place around the edges so they don’t ‘pop’ off. Press the eye in place, in the position indicated on the pattern, hold until the glue sets. Repeat on the other side, making sure the eyes are even with each other.

12. Apply the Mane Cut the maribu to about an 8” length. Place the cut end on the zip tie “knot” at the seam on the back. Using generous amounts of hot glue, zigzag glue along the seam and press and hold the maribu in place. Continue along the seam, between the ears and I end it when the rope/center on the maribu is about between the eyes…then the feathers continue on beyond this a little. Of course, you may make it longer or shorter as you wish.
