2. We know that Akbar was fond of Tansen because :

(a) Akbar would call upon Tansen to sing at any time during the day or night.

3. Shaakat Mian’s bright idea was to make Tansen sing Raga Deepak because heknew that if sung properly it could make the air so hot that the singer would be burntto ashes.

4. Tansen was ‘downcast’ and ‘unhappy’ because he knew that it was the evil design ofsome jealous courtiers to kill him.

5. (i) If Raga Deepak is sung properly, it will create too much heat. It will make air hot,rivers boil, leaves dry up and fall.

(ii) Because they wanted Tansen to burn to ashes.

(B) 1. Tansen had requested Emperor Akbar to give him time to prepare. He wanted time totrain his daughter Saraswati and her friend Rupvati to sing Raga Megh which wouldbring rain and extinguish the fire caused after singing Raga Deepak. Thus, Tansenwould be saved from burning to ashes.

2. Because Akbar asked him to sing Raga Deepak he could not disobey.

He thought to himself that if someone sang Raga Megh, it would save him. He taughthis daughter Saraswati and her friend, Raga Megh. He asked them to sing only afterthe lamps started burning.

Yes, this plan worked well. As soon as he started singing, the air became hot, theaudience bathed in perspiration, the leaves dried up and fell, and then river waterstarted boiling. Suddenly, flames shot up and lighted lamps. Just then the two girlsstarted singing Raga Megh, and Tansen was saved. (5 marks each)

6. THE MONKEY AND THE CROCODILE

2. When the crocodile with the monkey on his back, reached midstream, he told themonkey about his evil plan of killing him because his wife could not survive withouteating his (the monkey’s) heart.

3. The monkey was scared and distressed. He knew his life was in danger. But he wasvery wise. He kept his cool and quickly thought of a plan.

4. On reaching back to his tree, the monkey plucked a few fruits and threw them downtowards the crocodile telling him to go and give them to his wife. Fruits are good forthe mind and body more than a monkey’s heart. He bade him good bye and told himnever to meet again.

5. Monkey kept him cool and said that he should have told him before so that he couldhave brought his heart along. He asked the crocodile to turn back immediately.

The crocodiletold her about the monkey and said that he was very nice as he used to send fruits forher. She then demanded to eat his heart. The crocodile shouted at her and refused todeceive his friend. She asked the crocodile to bring the monkey to her but he refused.She got angry and dived deep into the river.

Firstly, that old and sick people need sunshine andfresh air which helps to avoid many ailments like, body ache, joint pain, asthma,jaundice, etc. Secondly, this lesson has also taught us to keep our promise even if wehave to go out of the way to fulfil it. This is what the little sun rays has done.

2. I would always recommend a specialist rather than a physician to a patient in myneighbourhood. The reason being that the physician may treat any disease but theydo not touch the root cause of the disease and the patient may get relapse of thedisease. But the specialist after all tests and checkups would treat the patient expertly.

There are dead animals and rottenfruits in the absence of tortoises that had kept our forest clean. We are fed up withrats. They have become too bold because there are no snakes. We are pestered byinsects because there are no lizards to check them. I will convince him that our lifehas become miserable without our friends. They should be called back.

10. A STRANGE WRESTLING MATCH

1. While the ghost was busy crushing the stone Vijay Singh secretly took out an egg andcrushed it to show the fluid. Again the ghost was made to crush the rock to extractsalt. But he could not do so. Vijay Singh again secretly took out the lump of salt andcrushed it.

5. To Vijay Singh, insects with seven wings in the cave means seven blows. He made theghost believe that those blows had no effect on him. It was not a ghost but a robberwho under the guise of ghost frightened and looted the travellers. He lived a verycomfortable life.

(B) 1. It was not really a ghost whom Vijay Singh encountered but a dacoit in the guise of aghost. This is evident from some facts like :(a) Ghosts are not visible.(b) They cannot be touched by hand.(c) Ghosts possess extraordinary powers and if it had been one, it could have easily
