Michael Heckenberger,
Letter From The President It was about eighteen months ago that several members, past President Kathryn Barrett and I were in State College, where Kathryn accepted an Alumni Association award on behalf of the Chapter. It was a night of great celebration of our Chapter’s accomplishments of the previous year. The next day found Happy Valley blanketed in snow. An excellent football game followed, culminating with the celebration of Coach Paterno’s 409th win. It was the perfect weekend in Happy Valley. Two days later, that all changed.
There have been indictments, firings, and trials. There have been unprecedented sanctions, fines, and punishments. News cycles lasted hours and then months. As alumni and friends of Penn State, many were wondering what else could possibly go wrong. When would all of this end? It was with this backdrop that I was elected as your chapter president. I wondered if I would be up to the task with such a strong- and many times negative- spotlight upon Penn State.

Winter 2012-2013
2012 Annual Meeting and Spring FlingWe gathered at The Chamberlin at Fort Monroe
last March for an elegant evening that included drinks and dinner, a program, election of officers, dancing and a speaker who scored big with his talk on “Turning Hurdles into Stepping Stones”.
Guest speaker was Keith Goganious, ’91, Hampton University’s Defensive Coordinator. Keith, a football standout at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, was a PSU linebacker and NFL athlete who played for the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens. He explained how he uses the lessons he learned from Coach Joe Paterno with his student athletes today.

Regina suggested it was time to freshen up our entry into the Homecoming Parade. She had ideas. She had enthusiasm. Most of all she had spirit that was contagious.
Regina presented her ideas to the board and everyone was immediately on board to retire our beloved surfing lion and become pirates. “We ARRRR Penn State” was born. When our parade of pirates “swashbuckled” down College Ave., what were the judges to do? They awarded our chapter BEST out-of-state chapter entry and a $500 prize. When Regina has an idea you

For the Glory,
hard work and dedication to this Chapter.
The reputation of the university was built on the hundreds of thousands of quality alumni. Whether you are new to the area, or have been here for many years, I invite you to connect with your PSU Hampton Roads community. If you are currently an active member, I would like to personally thank you and all of my fellow Board members for your
Our chapter continues its mission of connecting alumni to each other, to the University and to our local Penn State students. We have a dedicated board of directors and are always looking for new ideas or events to capture the interests of our diverse members. While we support student athletes throughout the year, we are more than just a bunch of old folks getting together to tailgate! We continue to have an endowed chapter scholarship to support local students in their quest for a Penn State education. We have a strong alumni admissions team, participating in local high school fairs and our yearly student sendoff. We give back to our community by volunteering at our local food banks. In short, it’s a great group of passionate people with whom to connect. The fact that they are fellow Penn Staters makes it even better.

Student Care PackagesEach year, an average 50-60 freshmen from
Hampton Roads enroll at a Penn State campus. That figure doesn’t include World Campus students- those who are studying from home or from a local military base online- or transfer students.
For those far from home, Hampton Roads alumni send a care package to supplement study snacks during finals week for spring and fall semesters. As past president and former WVEC-TV health news anchor Kathryn Barrett, ’79, says, “We send boxes full of the best sugar and sodium for finals!” Actually, Care Packages Chairman Becky Burley is adding granola bars, healthier options and some non-food goodies!
Arion Harris, ’14, poses with her fall semester care package at PSU Berks campus Every now and then, chapter leaders revisit the idea of whether to update our tradition of sending care packages. Is there a better gift? Should we, frankly, spend less on postage?
We brainstorm a myriad of gift possibilities and we keep coming back to the little brown box.
On December 12, 2012, Chemical Engineering major Arion Harris wrote on our facebook page, “Received my finals week goodies box. Soooo excited!” In an email she wrote, “Thanks again to the Alumni for the wonderful package.”
Harris, from Hampton, is vice president of the Society of Women Engineers, the Blue and White Society treasurer
