Lesson 1: Music agreements & licenses
What is the difference between a ‘spot’ and a ‘song’? A ‘song title’ applies to a piece of music with a particular melody A ‘spot title’ is the title of a commercial in which a song title is used. When registering a title, the piece of music should be registered. The
subsequent commercial ‘spots’ or commercial titles are submitted under the umbrella of the song title.
NOTES: Song title should be registered exactly as indicated in the agreement Commercial ‘spot’ titles can be added as ‘alternative titles’ during song registration

ASCAP & SESAC: Ownership shares are divided 50%/50% between composers/publishers.
BMI: Ownership shares are divided 100%/100% between composers/publishers. Song titles with composers/publishers from multiple PROs must have matching
ownership shares. A title with 25% ASCAP composer / 25% BMI composer must have the same publishing ownership splits (i.e. 25% ASCAP publisher / 25% BMI publisher)
