Court Reporters typically work in court, board rooms, medical
conferences and other locations. Their job is to transcribe every
single word that is said. They type very quickly, more than 225
words per minute, using a code on a special type of machine,
known as steno machine. The steno machine is hooked up
to a computer that translates the coded pages into English.
Afterwards, the court reporter reviews the transcript to make
sure that it’s flawless. Court reporters also work for lawyers and
doctors and record important legal meetings. Closed Captioners
work in media such as film and video to create subtitles for
the hard-of-hearing or non-native English speakers. The most
important traits for a Court Reporter/Closed Captioner are the
ability to concentrate on the spoken word, a strong work ethic,
and interest in technology.
