The following diagram shows part of the rotation action of a hammer throw field event in athletics. The
‘hammer’ in the men’s competition comprises of a 7.26 kg metal ball attached to a steel wire no longer than
1.22 m. In the hammer throw, athletes start and finish inside a 2.13 m diameter throwing circle.

When completing a hammer throw, athletes rotate inside the throwing circle from the back to the front of the
circle, swinging the hammer and, at the same time, rotate their body around before throwing the hammer as far
as they can. The thrower usually makes 3 or 4 spins before releasing the hammer. Athletes will commonly throw
4 to 6 times per competition.
