spired and repetitious, the few times it does take off sledgeham-mered at the already numb crowd. Cheap sets have little to do with what happens in front of them; singing is live over tape, allowing undertones of the original vocalist; and little is coherent, the matron's song from "Chicago" being sung to femme prisoners by someone who looks like a madame from Winnemucca, gangster outfits showing up in a look at rock 'n ' roll.

Hopefully all people involved will put this show behind them. That will be hardest for the au-dience. &We.

including an individual shift by Vika for a rampant Tina Turner impression backed by Spinning's drumming. The gymnastic prowess of Kirsten Vollman and Keith Campbell, in duo work along with single bar and overhead rings, is a neat relief amid the vortex of whirling impressions.

Two of the better look-alikes are Eric Evans as Michael Jackson and Malcolm LeGarde as Lionel Richie. Evans' achievements in slippery motions a la Jackson and LeGarde s mellow interp of Richie's "A l l Night Long " are two definite applause-mongers for the Kutasherie.

Kenneth Corizzi's Bruce Springsteen is appropriately muscular, and lithe dancers Dan Nielsen, Linda Collins and Nicki McCauley rev up their several appearances in line work, but also extend themselves in other scenes beyond terpery.

Kutash brings depth and outer vision to his staging with scrim, big-city backdrop, neon and multiimage effects. The musical support is taped and there are inserts of lip-s y n c - Will.

time this season it's escaped last place.

Still in first was NBC, scoring an 18.3 rating, 29 share for its 18th week on top in the 21-week-old sea-son. ABC found 15.6/24 and CBS followed with 15.0/23.

Contributing to NBC's strength were its usual Thursday powerhouse programs ( "The Cosby Show" and "Family Ties" equaled their highest shares ever), " T h e Two Mrs. Grenvilles Part 2 " on Monday and strong counter-programming Sunday, when the net pitted its telepic "The Facts Of Life Down Under" against "Amerika Part 1."

Part two of "Grenvilles" was the third-highest episode for a multi-parter this season, behind part two of CBS' "The Last Frontier" Oct. 7, 1986, which claimed a 25.0/39, and "Amer ika ' s " opening-round numbers.

ABC found happiness with the Carol Burnett special "Carol, Carl,

Whoopi & Robin" Tuesday, which far outstripped the previous week's "Jack And Mike" figures of 13.9/23 for the same time period.

"Amerika Part 1" ranked number seven for the week, behind (in order) " C o s b y , " "Fami ly T i e s , " " C h e e r s , " "Murder She W r o t e , " " M o o n l i g h t i n g " and "Night Court."

Rounding out the top 10 were "Growing Pains," The Two Mrs. Grenvilles Part 2 " and "Golden Girls."

Part two of "Amerika" this past Monday night slipped to 20.9/31.

Squeezed by the competition Sunday night, CBS' 9-11 p.m. lineup of "Designing Women," "Nothing Is Easy" and "Hard Copy" showed declines. " E a s y , " in its second week on the air, slipped 12% to 10.0/14 from 11.4/17 the previous sesh.

In the early-evening news arena, " N B C Nightly N e w s " toted up 13.1/23, " C B S Evening N e w s " 12.5/22 and "ABC World News Tonight" 10.5/18.
