As with any renovation, a set of plans were

needed to show the existing elements of the

building that were to be demolished and replaced;

all interior walls and stairs were removed. This

brownstone was being converted to single

bedroom apartments, one of which was ADA

accessible. There is one apartment per floor

and each unit has its own kitchen and bathroom.

dRAWINGS

The Brownstone Renovation required that a

coordinated set of construction drawings be

produced for a brownstone triplex located at

159 Underhill Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

The intent of this project was to not only

engage students in generating a set of

computer-aided documents, but to also

analyze the importance of construction

drawings in the Architecture field.

CENTER

The project first began as sinple dimensions, taking on the form of squares and rectangles. These shapes then were arranged

following a selected form of symmetry, e.g. central, radial, andlinear, but still needed to emphasize strong cirulation.

This project is based on central design with some influence from radial form as well. The idea was to

create a building that revolved around its circulation elements in the heart

of the structure.

The Wellness Center is a structure designed using a building program. Students were to obey the given dimensions for each room type to mature their abilities to conceive and develop design concepts while incorporating elements of structure, material and technology. This project consisted

of creating pragmaticarrangement thatdemonstrated bothfunction & circulation.

WELLNESS

CENTER

Page 7: Portfolio Work

Although the Welliness Center mimics a set of geometric shapes stacked on one another, its plan somewhat “cranks” to avoid the typical box construction. There are only two floors and every room takes a certain shape. Regardless if the building maintained its “squares and rectangles” nature, the direction of each room differentiates fom the next. This leads to the formation of several cantilevers.

FRAMINGAn architect’s ability to produce construction

docments such as framing plans and building details

expresses his or her understanding of building

technology. For this project, students were required to use a set of

construction drawings for two existing buildings in

New York to produce framing plans. The first

drawing is a roof drainage plan for 250 Powers Street

in Brooklyn, New York of which indicates the slopes

in the building’s roofing and the direction of which water will be drained.

The following plan is one of several framing plans for 1869 Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, New York. It diagrams the CMU bearing walls, footings and lintels installed. The remaining three drawings are framing plan’s for the structures five floors; the first floor stands alone, the second and fourth floors share the same plan with the third and fifth floors following the same layout. Each plan indicates the use of wooden joists and steel pocket beam construction, which are new elements added to the building.
