Jan van Eyck

• Van Eyck was a Flemish painter during the Northern Renaissance that was most famous for his oil paintings. In fact, a myth perpetuated by Giorgi Vasari claimed that van Eyck invented oil painting (he didn’t). During his life, van Eyck also served as a diplomat for Philip the Good of Bruges. He died young and had a relatively short period of artistic productivity.
