Autumn Term 2012 Newsletter and UpdateWelcome back after what I hope has been a very good break with a little sunshine thrown in for good measure!

We are delighted to welcome a number of staff who are joining the Music Service team this year, including, Christopher Mahy (Senior Leader), Suzie Shrubb (Oboe), Daniela Coleman-Carr (Voice and curriculum), Ed Walsh (Ready 4 Music, voice and curriculum), Lizzi McAndrew (Curriculum and Ready 4 Music), Helen Price (Piano and Ready 4 Music) We trust you will welcome them into your schools and support them in familiarising themselves with your individual systems, staff and students. Further to requests from schools we will e-mail you a staff ID sheet for you to display alongside your staff photos to enable staff, pupils and parents to identify the music teachers.

Please remember to book early for events this term to guarantee your place. Do check the website for updates (www.portsmouthmusichub.org) and have a look at the on-line Gallery to check out some of the events from last term. We send out updates via Portsmouth Music Hub Twitter and Facebook sites, and we hope you will follow up to keep up to date. There are also regular news flashes and updates on the home page of the website.

The Hub continues to thrive, gaining further national recognition in educational publications. There are many Hub events over the coming weeks, so again, do check the website. The third Hub newsletter will be published in September on the website and a link will be sent to your schools. Please do make this information available to parents via your websites if at all possible. A number of schools have now put a link to the Music Hub website on their school websites so that parents can access information direct, saving administrative time for schools. If you would like the details again, please contact the Music Service Office.

I look forward to seeing many of you in the forthcoming weeks – please do contact us if you need any support or you have ideas, suggestions and feedback for us. Remember to book your places for concerts, events, CPD and of course, the Marines concert on the 18th October!

Best wishes,

READY 4 MUSICReady 4 Music - Arrangements for the start of the Autumn Term

Instruments for Ready 4 Music lessons were delivered at the end of the Summer Term. Any outstanding instruments will be delivered in the first week of the Autumn Term. All schools are required to sign the Music Service loan agreement and take responsibility for the instruments. Subject professional development materials: Music in schools - promoting good practiceIn March 2012, Ofsted published Music in schools: wider still and wider 2008–2011, which highlights the importance of giving sufficient, regular time for developing aural awareness and musical understanding and ensuring that schools prioritise giving pupils opportunities for practical, creative application and response to music.

These professional development materials have been put together to help to promote dialogue between music teachers, headteachers, and music hub leaders to build their shared understanding about the key features of good teaching and learning by reflecting on the main messages from the music report.
