The 3 States of MatterO State of Matter- the physical forms
in which a substance exists.O There are 3 states of matter.O SolidsO LiquidsO Gases
![Page 3: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
A. SolidsO Solid- the state of matter that has a
definite shape & volume.O A solids shape and volume stay the
same.
![Page 4: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Solids (cont.)O Particles are very close together.O They have a strong attraction for
each other.O The particles vibrate.
![Page 5: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Examples of SolidsO WoodO Humans O ComputersO MarblesO Weights
![Page 6: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
B. LiquidsO Liquid- the state of matter that has a
definite volume, but takes on the shape of its container.
O Particles move fast enough to overcome the attraction between some of the particles.
O Particles slide past each other.O Liquids easily change shape.O Liquids don’t easily change volume.
![Page 7: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Liquids (cont.)O Ex: if you have a glass of milk how
can you change the shape? How can you change the milks volume?O All liquids have surface tension.O Surface tension- a force that holds
the particles together.O Surface tension (ST) causes some
liquids to form spherical drops.
![Page 8: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Liquids (cont.)O Different liquids have different ST.O Ex: gasoline, has low ST and forms
flat drops.O All liquids have viscosity.
![Page 9: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
1. ViscosityO Viscosity- a liquids resistance to
flow
Low viscosity High viscosity
![Page 10: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Examples of LiquidsO WaterO Apple juiceO SodaO Kool-aidO Milk
![Page 11: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
C. GasesO Gas- the state of matter that has no
shape or volume.O One small helium tank can fill almost
700 balloons.O How is this possible?O The tank is under pressure.
![Page 12: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Gases (cont.)O Particles in a gas move quickly, so
they can break away from their attraction for other particles.
O The amount of empty space between gas particles can change.
![Page 13: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Example
Helium tankHelium balloon
A helium tank holds more gas particles and they are closer together, but in a balloon they are much farther apart and they have much more room to move around

Examples of GasesO Carbon DioxideO OxygenO Water VaporO HydrogenO Helium
![Page 15: Powerpoint](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042815/55659095d8b42a093a8b488a/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Examples O These are the particles of each of the
states of matter below.
