▪ The World Energy Council is the principal impartial
network of leaders and practitioners promoting an
affordable, stable and environmentally sensitive energy
system for the greatest benefit of all.
▪ Formed in 1923, the Council is the UN-accredited global
energy body, representing the entire energy spectrum,
with more than 3.000 member organisations located in
over 90 countries and drawn from governments, private
and state corporations, academia, NGOs and energy-
related stakeholders.
▪ The World Energy Council informs global, regional and national energy strategies by hosting high-level events, publishing
authoritative studies, and working through its extensive member network to facilitate the world’s energy policy dialogue.
▪ The World Energy Week (WEW) is the regular event of the World Energy Council that brings together the World Energy
community. Coming from all parts of the world and representing national, regional and global energy systems and sectors,
participants take part in internal member meetings and public conferences featuring high-level speakers on the state of the
energy system, as well as social events. Private high-level CEO and Ministerial roundtable meetings are hosted alongside
these gatherings allowing for interaction and shared insights and side events may also be organised. Its mission is to:
o Convene energy leaders and practitioners from across the spectrum of the energy system to identify and set the
priorities of the world energy community;
o Provide a stage for the Council’s content and insights, and to share perspectives on new developments and
experiences across the global energy system and how each country can address its energy trilemma;
o Catalyse thought leadership;
o Assess strategic priorities for the Council across content, network and platforms, allowing time for regional and global
communities to come together.
▪ The event gathers more than 350 professionals across the energy spectrum, including Member Committees’
leaders, Ministers and government officials, private sector energy leaders, energy practitioners and experts, young
energy professionals, academia and civil society.

▪ The Council convened its 2012 Executive Assembly in Monaco on 8th November and at the Plenary HSH Prince Albert II
of Monaco gave the opening address.
HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco addresses the NMC members“(…) All across the world, wherever my travels take me, especially for my environmental action, I know how difficult it is
to change the bases of our lifestyle, particularly when the economic crisis weakens each of us and when the future appears grim. That is why your role is to propose new solutions and should be at the heart of any approach concerning our relationship with energy. As such, I appreciated that your discussions focused on the correlation between the three
essential requirements: security, accessibility, and above all respect for the environment. This obligation does not preclude, quite on the contrary, our duty to pursue the demanding innovative and inventive work by which you are motivated. Because finding energy solutions that are abundant, safe and sustainable is the primary condition for
fundamental change (…)”
