Prejudice Today
Assignment Description: As your final project for To Kill a Mockingbird, you will be identifying a form of prejudice that exists today. You will choose a partner to work on the project with you. You will be responsible for your own paper. Your papers can be similar, but they CANNOT be exactly the same. You will work together on Part 3. You will only receive a grade for your part of the project (your paper) and based on how your group does on the presentation, you could receive a bonus to your individual score. Racism exists in all forms. Although we do not have segregated proms, we do have our own forms of racism and prejudice. You will be identifying a form of racism or prejudice that exists for us – as a school, community, country, or world. What can we do as a community to change it? Examples: Prejudice against people from the middle east, Prejudice against African Americans, Prejudice against women – in the middle east and elsewhere, etc. There are many you can choose. However, all choices MUST be approved by me. You will be working with a partner to identify the form of racism or prejudice and develop an action plan for how to help stop it. There are 2 parts to this project: Part 1: Your paper.
Part A: Background of the prejudice A one-page description of the type of racism and prejudice.
- What is the history behind this prejudice? (When did it start, how long has it existed, what are some major events?)
- Where does it exist? - Who are the people targeted? - This MUST be in MLA format
Part B: Action plan A one-page description of the plan to help eliminate your prejudice or racism. You MUST be able to put your action plan into place. If Principal Adrean, the President, or any global leader wanted to start doing it, they must be able to. You have to think about all the details of how it will work.

- What is the plan? (Include specific details: commercials, t-shirts, etc) o What will you do and what will those actions look like?
! Ex: What will the t-shirts say, who will be in your commericals, etc
- How will this be put into action? o Where will it take place? o How will me make sure people will see it? o How will you get people to join?
- Why is this a good solution? - What information/data/other plans support your idea?
o You must research ONE other group that has a similar plan and explain how it relates to your plan.
Part 2: Presentation to Judges You will be working with your partner to create a presentation about your plan and why it is beneficial. You MUST make a visual aid (poster or trifold) that highlights the following:
- What is the form of prejudice or racism? - Who is the group targeted? - Why is this a problem? - What are the details of your action plan? - Why is this a successful plan?
You will be presenting to judges as they walk around and score your presentations. They will be asking questions, so you want to make sure that you know about your topic in depth and have thought about details.

The Individual Part: You will be responsible for YOUR paper. It must include both Part A and Part B. This paper will be your grade. The Group Part: Although you have individual parts if the project, you must work together as a group to make sure they work together and present to our panel of judges. Based on your visual aid, and your presentation to the judges, you will receive a grade for your presentation. If you receive an A,B, or C on your presentation, you will receive bonus points added to your individual score. How it will be graded: Each member will be given an individual grade for his or her part of the project. However, the group will also do a visual aid and final presentation together and will receive a grade for both. The group grade will not hurt your individual grade for the project, but it can help increase your grade. Students in groups that receive an A will receive 10 pts added to their individual score. For example if you received a 70/110 which is a D on your section of the project, but your group received an A, you would move to 80/110, which is a C. The bonus points will be as follows: Group Grade “A” = 10 bonus points Group Grade “B” = 5 bonus points Group Grade “C” = 3 bonus points Group Grade “D” = 0 bonus points Group Grade “F” = 0 bonus points
